Good work Rocco. I have found another Bahamian from 1967, I think. Was looking on Boxrec the other night. If you want to rate him, I will give you his name.
His name is Carl Baker. Man Power's lone opponent. http://www.boxrec.com/boxer_display.php?boxer_id=021195 Last edited by a87star; 06-29-2006 at 10:24 PM. |

As I've been going through this, I've been collecting as of late off ebay copies of the Ring magazine for that time period and it's really interesting to read about what all was going on in 1966, 67 and the late 60's with the whole Ali/Clay issue and the heavyweight boxing scene. As I go through those issues, I'm actually starting to think about doing the replay with starting it in 1966 instead. There were a lot of great fights in 1966 that I'd like to do in this replay. New 1967 Heavyweight Replay Project
Eddie Roosevelt Jr. Rating 3 USA
Heavyweight 1966-70 I did a rating for this guy some time ago. I had him as Roosevelt Eddie Jr. Not sure how in the world I got the first and last name reversed!! 6 wins / 7 losses / 3 draws / 4 KO Hometown: Harlem, NY Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Never stopped in a fight though he was DQ'd in the 1st round in a fight against Jack Bodell in Feb. 1969 when Bodell was knocked down and Eddie hit Bodell while he was still down and was disqualified. The first year of Roosevelt's career was against the usual local club fighters until May of 1967 when he went out of New York for the first time to go to Boston and fight Jack O'Halloran. Halloran was 6-0-0 just starting out his career and Roosevelt was 3-1-0 having lost his last fight a 4 round split decision to a Jim Cogdell. Roosevelt and O'Halloran fought a short 4 rounder that ended in a draw called. After that Roosevelt fought 3 more times in 1967 going 1-1-1 against more club fighters in New York and Philadelphia. In Jan 1968 he traveled outside the US for the first time going to Rome, Italy where he took on a guy named Giulio Saraudi(9-1-3,4). Saraudi beat Roosevelt in an 8 round decision. Interestingly it was Saraudi's last career fight. After that over the next couple of years, Roosevelt suddenly started drawing some bigger name opponents into the ring and doing some world traveling to get these opponents. Two months after his trip to Italy he went down to Florida and fought Florida Al Jones loosing to him in a 10 round decision. He then traveled back across the Atlantic going to Aberavon, Wales, England taking on Billy Gray(19-5-1,9). Roosevelt won by 5th round TKO when, BoxRec says, Gray was defeated sitting on his stool at the end of the 5th. After that Roosevelt went down to Sao Paulo, Brazil and fought a pretty good up and coming South American named Luis Pires in two fights in 1968. Pires defeated Roosevelt in the first fight by a 10th round decision. In the rematch, Roosevelt managed to knock out Pires in the 8th round. Five months later in Feb. 1969 it was back to Enland for the Bodell fight. Roosevelt then went back to New York and in June 1969 fought James j. Woody for the New York State Heavyweight Title. Woody wins a 10 round decision. Roosevelt fights one more time in his career, in Jan. 1970, this time international again and back in Rome, Italy where he meets Italian great Dante Cane. The fight ends after 8 rounds in a draw. Despite the mixed results it kind of leaves you wondering why the somewhat sudden end of Roosevelt's career. Celio Turrini Rating 1 Italy Heavyweight 1961-67 15 wins / 8 losses / 2 draws / 9 KO Birthplace: Latina Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Turrini compiled a 10-4-1 record through January 1964 against guys like Gianfranco Tommasini(4-13-3,1) whom he fought four times winning 1 and drawing 1. He won fights against Horst Herold and Giancarlo Bacchini while loosing to Luigi Martuzzi(7-3-0,2) and Benito Penna. Only other win against anyone with a record worth mentioning was Adriano Amati(8-5-1,2). In February and April 1964 he lost consecutive fights to Giuseppe Migliari and Johnny Barrazza, then in July fought to a 6 round draw with Eduardo Corletti who was starting out at 7-0 in his young career. Later fights through the rest of Turrini's career incuded wins over Gianfranco Tommasini(thier 5th and final fight), Benito Confin(2-5-1,1) three times and a 3rd round victory over Argentine LHW Jose Angel Manzur(31-33-14,13) when Manzur was DQ'd. He lost fights to Ossi Buttner(17-17-6,5) and Benito Penna. In December 1965 he fought Dante Cane who was 9-1-1 early in his career. The fight was declared a no contest by the Italian Federation. John Watson Rating 1 USA Heavyweight 1963-72 1 win / 8 losses / 0 draws / 1 KO Hometown: Richmond, VA. Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Lost one fight in November 1963 by TKO then does not show up again till April 1967 when Billy Williams decisions him in 4 rounds. IN May of 67 Watson looses another 4 round decision. Fighting twice each in 1968 and 1969, Watson is stopped in the 3rd to 5th rounds in all four fights. He's then does not show up again in the ring till January 1971 loosing a 6 round split decision to Ollie Harris and then in April 1972 he closes out his career what Boxrec shows, with a win, a 3rd round knockout of a Billy Howard. Willie Williams Rating 1 USA Heavyweight 1958-69 8 wins / 19 losses / 1 draw / 1 KO Hometown: Saginaw, MI Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Only wins against anyone we've seen rated were against Frank Josephs and Jim Christopher. He also beat Johnny Barrazza. Losses be mounted against LHW Joe Dorsey(27-8-1,20KO)twice, MW-Mike Pusateri, Jim Robinson, Allen Thomas, LHW Jimmy McDermott, Dick Wipperman four times, Amos Johnson twice, Marion Conner twice, Willie Ray Richardson and LHW Jimmy Ralston(19-1-1,13KO). |

New 1967 Heavyweight Replay Project
Well that's it for the moment. I started out a couple weeks ago working on my list of Canadian HW's with a Johnny Barrazzo. I kept pully up guys he fought in 67, then looked at those guys who fought others in 67 and came up with all the above guys. I still got a few more from that group and maybe will finally do Barrazzo and get back to the Canadians!!

New 1967 Heavyweight Replay Project
Here's a couple guys that had photos posted earlier and one that I found a photo for....
George Mahoni Rating 1 New Zealand Heavyweight1958-70 22 wins / 15 losses / 1 draw / 11 KO Alias: Niumaetolu Mohini Hometown: Auckland, New Zealand Birthplace: Nukualofa, Tonga Trainer: George Cammick Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Thru mid 1961, Mahoni compiled a 16-4-1,8KO record fighting mainly in New Zealand, New Caledonia, and the Fiji Islands. He fought once in his birth country, Tonga sometime in early 1959. A couple early fights included a win a loss and a draw with Doudi Caea. In January 1960 he lost a 12 round decision to Eddie Cotton. In July of that year he stopped Steve Zoranich in 6 rounds. In August 1960 he defeated Peter Schmidt(4-9-0,2) in 13 rounds to win the then vacant New Zealand Heavyweight title that had been vacated by Sonny Pehi. Mohoni ended up relinquished the title in October 1963 having never defended it. A couple month after beating Schmidt, Mahoni was KO'd in the 11th round of a 12 rounder against Eddie Cotton. Four decision wins after that, 3, 12 rounders and 2, 15 rounders followed including wins over Mike Holt and Clive Stewart, for the Australasian HW title. In September 1961, Mahoni lost a 15 round decision to Stewart relinquishing the Australasian title to Clive. That was the start of a 6-11-0 skid over the remainder of his career. Losses mounted up against Bobby Stininato Twice, Lewani Waga twice, Semi(Sam Haley) Halalilo(21-10-0,16), and Mani Vaka in which he lost the Tonga Heavyweight in April 1969 after having defeated Mamea Pepa(1-3-0) in August 1968 to attain that title. Some other wins in that time were against Mike Holt and Stininato, and Halalilo. Mike Lanum Rating 1 USA Heavyweight 1964-70 11 wins / 9 losses / 0 draws / 4 KO Hometown: Houston, TX Birthplace: Cleveland, OH Trainer: Perry Payne Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Started out 8-2-0,4KO through early 1966 fighting the local "talent" around Houston and Beaumont Texas. Then in June 1966 Lanum was KO'd in the 5th round by John Phillips(3-3-0,1) and then in October of that year travelled to Miami, Florida and was stopped in the 6th round by Freddie Sullivan(18-9-0,12). Lanum then moved on up to Savannah, GA and won an 8 round decision over Tom Cohen(7-5-0,7). Other then maybe the fight with Sullivan, not much to speak of in opponents. Then on November 2nd and 9th we find Lanum back in Miami Beach and Melbourne, Florida where he takes on veteran German born heavyweight Willi Besmanoff. Besmanoff manages to take a split decision from Lanum in the first go around, but then 7 days later Lanum wins the 10 round decision. A month later on December 9th these two square off for a rubber match. This time the old veteran knocks out Lanum in the 9th round. A 6th round KO loss to Tony Ventura in 1967, a 2nd round KO by Boone Kirkman in Feb 1968, a 4 round decision win over a Sherman Goodman in June 1968 pretty much finishes Lanum's career, except for a one fight comeback of sorts in June 1970 when he's dealt away with in 2 rounds by Larry Middleton. Bowie Adams Rating 1 USA Heavyweight 1963-77 23 wins / 12 losses / 4 draws / 22 KO Alias: Brown Hometown: Eustis, FL Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto From June 1963 through August 1965 Adams went 17-0-1 with 15 knockouts and 2 TKO wins. 13 of those first 17 wins were against guys fighting for the first time, many of them that fight with Adams being thier only career bout. The last win was against Tony Anchondo who was 1-4-0 at the time. The only opponents he faced with any kind of ring experience were against Clifford Gray(3-26-2,2) whom Adams KO'd in 3 and Sam Pride(5-9-2,3) who fought Adams to a 10 round draw. Then in September 1965 he lost for the first time a 10 round decision to Emil Umek who was 0-3-0 at that time. Up through this loss to Umek, all of Adams fights were in Arizona. After the first loss to Umek, Bowie is absent from the ring until May 1966 when he shows up in Manchester, England of all places to take on Billy Walker. Walker KO's Bowie in the 3rd round. Next fight comes in late January 1967 in Seattle, Washington when he's knocked out in the 2nd round by Boone Kirkman(6-0-0 at the time). After those 3 losses, Adams then manages to win 6 of his next 7 fights through June 1969 including wins over Sonny King and Tony Anchondo. The first win is a 6th round KO of Otis Lee in May 1967. The very next fight is a 10 round loss to an untested Barry McLelland. That's McLelland's only fight listed in boxrec. After beating Anchondo in June 1969, Adams career tailspins compiling only an 0-8-3 record. His one noteable fight during this time was a 3rd round TKO loss to Jose Roman in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I've attached also the photo for Adams. |
