American League Fireman of the Year Award

While the Chicago White Sox had a terrible 1904 season, that is not the fault of reliever Bill Hoffer who was named the American League Fireman of the Year award winner. On the year, Hoffer had 1-0 record with 2 saves and 2 shutdowns with a 0.00 ERA in 6 1/3 innings of play.

National League Rookie of the Year

What an outstanding season for New York Giants ace Ed Walsh. The #1 overall pick in the draft, Walsh did not disappoint in putting together a season that resulted in him winning the National League Rookie of the Year award. On the season, Walsh posted a 21-18 record with a 2.32 ERA in 318 1/3 innings that led to a league-leading 8.4 WAR.

American League Rookie of the Year

It was a bit of a gamble for the Boston Americans to trade Cy Young (who was coming off of a combined 56 wins in the previous 3 seasons) and a package of players to the "win now" Cincinnati Reds in return for their 1st round draft pick (6th selection). With that draft pick, the Americans targeted Johnny Lush; a pitcher with high potential and a surprisingly good bat. This gamble paid off, as Lush was named the American League Rookie of the Year. On the season, Lush posted a 19-15 record with a 2.10 ERA in 313 innings pitched that resulted in 6.6 WAR. Additionally, Lush was able to play outfield positions on his non-pitching day and contributed a slashline of .289/.327/.318 that resulted in an additional 2.4 WAR. Not a bad first year for Lush that saw him win Rookie of the Year, Silver Slugger, Gold Glove, and the World Series!

National League Platinum Pitcher

Despite his World Series troubles, Brooklyn Superbas ace Bob Wicker had a tremendous regular season in which he posted a 20-14 record with 6.2 WAR in 330 2/3 IP that led the league in ERA (1.63), WHIP (0.94), BABIP (.236), RA/9 (8.5), H/9 (6.9), QS (30), QS% (.857), and CG (33). This is Wicker's 2nd career Platinum Pitcher award.

American League Platinum Pitcher

Bouncing back from a down year by his standards, Washington Senators superstar Rube Waddell dominated the 1904 Season with a pitching performance that was truly extraordinary. In earning his 3rd American League Platinum Pitcher award, Waddell led the league in Wins (24), ERA (1.71), Games (44), Innings Pitched (336 1/3), Strikeouts (294), WHIP (1.00), K/9 (7.9), WAR (11.3), RA/9 (9.1), K/BB (3.8), FIP- (61), WIN % (.706 ), QS (32), and QS % (.914). There should be no question that Waddell is the best pitcher in MLB!

Moving from OOTP 23 to OOTP 25

Just picked up the game during the Steam sale and made the conversion to v25. Followed the guidance on converting and hopefully nothing to crazy happened with the conversion. I am hopeful that the OOTP team will assist in moving this over to the v25 forum thread.

*** An appreciative "thank you" to Matt for the quick response and move.

Owners Grab Cash

By all accounts, it was a financially successful year for MLB owners with the Pirates' owner taking $162,150 in cash profit (low) and the Americans' owner taking $373,993 in cash profit (high).

Giants Deal Taylor to Highlanders

A trade between the New York teams this morning that has Barry McCormick moving over to the Giants in exchange for Jack Taylor taking up new residence with the Highlanders. While Taylor wasn't used much the last few seasons, he still has decent ratings relative to the league and should provide back of the rotation support.

Giants receive:
Code:
Barry McCormick (29-year old SS/2B/3B)
1903 All-Star
.202/.254/.226 in 351 PA for 0.1 WAR (MLB 1904)
.222/.278/.271 in 1833 PA for 1.2 WAR (MLB / 4 seasons)
Highlanders receive:
Code:
Jack Taylor (30-year old P)
2nd round, 17th overall in 1897 draft
1901 Silver Slugger (P); 1902 All-Star
  1-1 record with 1.42 ERA and 0.2 WAR in 6 1/3 IP (MLB / 1904)
26-34 record with 3.23 ERA and 6.6 WAR in 509 1/3 IP (MLB / 4 seasons)

White Sox Make Blockbuster Trade

After a dismissal season that saw the White Sox finish 12-games below the .500 mark and 24-games out of 1st place in the American League race, Chicago pulled the trigger on a deal with the Washington Senators that adds considerable minor league prospect depth. From my vantagepoint, this trade heavily favors the White Sox who should reap the benefits over the coming years.

Washington receives:
Code:
Mike Grady (34-year old 1B/C)
2-time All-Star
1901 Silver Slugger at C position
.235/.308/.337 in 559 PA for 1.8 WAR (MLB 1904)
.255/.322/.359 in 2236 PA for 10.3 WAR (MLB / 4 seasons)
Chicago receives:
Code:
Lew Moren (21-year old P)
2nd round, 18th overall in 1902 draft
9th overall MLB prospect
35-51 record with 9 SV, 4.10 ERA, and 9.2 WAR in 625 1/3 IP (Double-A / 2 seasons)

Bugs Raymond (22-year old P)
1st round, 5th overall in 1903 draft
20th overall MLB prospect
10-10 record with 3.68 ERA and 3.5 WAR in 178 2/3 IP (Triple-A / 1 season)

Hans Lobert (22-year old 3B)
2nd round, 26th overall in 1902 draft
Former 10th ranked prospect (1903)
.324/.365/.382 in 74 PA for 0.5 WAR (MLB 1904)

Danny Hoffman (24-year old RF)
2nd round, 27th overall in 1902 draft
Former 68th ranked prospect (1903)
.243/.283/.295 in 364 PA for 1.6 WAR (MLB / 2 seasons)

MLB Draft

It was Draft Day and teams were ready to make their selections. With the top overall pick, the White Sox did the right thing and selected Ty Cobb. Philadelphia selected Branch Rickey, while New York went with Orval Overall to round out the top-3 selections.

With the 16th overall selection, Boston chose catcher George Gibson. The scouting report on Gibson has him having "plus power potential" who is "very sure-handed and reliable" behind the plate and who is "aggressive" on the base paths but "runs well." With the remaining 4 picks (Rounds 2 through 5), the Americans selected RP Joe Harris, 2B Art Hoelskoetter, C Tubby Spencer, and 3B John Goodwin.
