Tommy's all scowly in his Batters Pack Mets image, possibly because he knows that beautiful Shea Stadium, where he's photographed, will one day be torn down and be replaced by Wilpon's Shrine to the Dodgers, Corrupt Bank Field. (Or perhaps because the 1967 Mets are already sucking by the time Tommy got photographed at Shea. One or the other.)

Instead, let's have Tommy smiling in the Florida (er, "St. Petersburg") sun for Dexter Press, shall we?



It is a bit of a pity that Mr. Lynn Ryan, having had a cup of coffee with the Mets in September 1966, spent the entire 1967 season in the minors. Had Ryan been promoted again, he, George Seaver, and Herman Davis (pictured here) would have formed a formidable trio of "we'd rather you called us by our middle names, thank you" talents.

(Has there ever been a better collection of middle-name guys? I can't remember Henry Gehrig or William Clemens ever having teammates of similar talent/name preference, for example. And George Griffey Sr. and Jr. playing together doesn't quite count, IMO.)

Fat Jack (probably the last player with that sort of nickname…"Pudge" just isn't the same, IMO) has an image in the Pitchers Pack with wonderful coloring, but it's at an odd angle. For those who prefer not to look up Jack's nostrils, here you go.

The Mets' other Jack (the one who probably ended the year wishing he was still a Met, instead of having been swapped to California…and making one pitch at Fenway*) gets photographed, having no idea what's in store for him, but at least taking a better picture than the washed-out Mets image currently in the Pitchers Pack.



*-okay, so Hamilton did get to make a pennant-race start with the Angels, starting Game 160 at Detroit, one of two key wins California got in the 4-game set to keep the Tigers out of the playoffs. He was awful, though, allowing a single to McAuliffe and then walking Lumpe, Horton (after Kaline fouled out) and Mathews to force in a run before getting the quick hook from Rigney. Two more runs scored before Bill Kelso could shut the door, but the Halos got 6 in the 8th to pull out the upset.

Btw, only 20,421 came to the Saturday pennant-race doubleheader to see this. Pathetic, Motor City. Pathetic. (Sunday was better-38,988. But still.)
