Well, John Ward did something even better -- the 25-year-old Louisville Colonels star has now won 200 games in his career. That put him in a very select group of pitchers. He joined that exclusive club today at Eclipse Park I by whipping the Cleveland Blues 6-4, holding them to 9 hits in 9 innings while chalking up 5 strikeouts and no walks. In the postgame interview, the modest Ward said, "It's special to win 200 games. You don't do it by yourself. You do it with good stuff and a good bullpen. You are only as good as the guys behind you. Years from now I might look back on it and give myself a little pat on the back." Since joining the league, Ward has compiled an ERA of 1.86 with a career record of 200-132. He has 1440 strikeouts in 2915.2 innings and has held opponents to a .242 batting average. Bobby Mathews Whips White Sox for #200 Friday, June 26th, 1885: It was a special day at Jefferson Street Grounds for Philadelphia's Bobby Mathews. The Athletics ace logged his 200th career win against the White Sox. In the 4-0 decision Mathews tossed 9 innings, surrendered 3 hits with no walks and 4 strikeouts. "I'm real fortunate that I had the opportunity to play with such good players during my career," said Mathews. "I just couldn't have drawn it up any better. I'm glad I did it in this uniform, too. Philadelphia is a great organization to play for." Thus far in his career Mathews's numbers include 469 appearances, 200 victories, 199 defeats, 4 saves, 3495.2 IP, 828 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.04.

News Kelly of Cincinnati Earns NL Batting Crown Monday, August 10th, 1885: Batting titles are tough to come by. It takes a lot of talent, hard work, consistency, few slumps, good health and a little luck. King Kelly of the Cincinnati Red Stockings put it all together this year and led the National League with a .334 batting average (131-392). The Red Stockings catcher played in 101 games, ending the season with 21 doubles, 7 triples, 7 home runs, 72 runs and 58 RBI. "When you work hard, good things happen," Kelly explained to reporters after winning the coveted award. "Slumps happen to everyone, but you won't break out of one without hard work. I think that's one of the prime reasons for my success this season." Colonels Connor Takes AL Batting Crown Monday, August 10th, 1885: When the American League regular season came to a close yesterday, Roger Connor was all alone in the top spot in the batting race with a .321 average. The 28-year-old Louisville Colonels first baseman smacked 147 hits in 458 at-bats and wrapped up the year with 16 doubles, 11 triples and 7 home runs. Connor appeared in 111 games and had 63 RBIs and 86 runs scored. NABL News: Playoffs begin Monday, August 10th, 1885: A playoff baseball game has a surreal atmosphere. Fans become one, roaring in unison at a great play and sharing the grief at blown opportunity. Victory and defeat play out in a rainbow of colors, sounds, smells and feelings. North American BaseBall League playoff baseball is a memorable experience. What is it like? Ask the 10-year-old sitting with his dad as he plucks a foul ball out of the air. Ask the veteran slugger who hits that walk-off home run. Ask the manager in the big game after coming from 10 games back to win the pennant. Ask the countless number of legends who have flourished or those greats who never won the big one. Or tomorrow, ask any of the rookies what it's like to play in one of the Round 1 showdowns: Boston Beaneaters versus Louisville Colonels.

Colonels Win 1885 Round 1 Wednesday, August 19th, 1885: It was a clash of the two best teams in the North American BaseBall League -- the Louisville Colonels and the Boston Beaneaters -- and when the dust cleared on the diamond -- the Colonels were the 1885 Round 1 champions. It all came to an end today at Eclipse Park I, when Louisville clinched the title with a 3-0 victory and won the series 4-3. It is the 3rd time it has happened in club history. MVP was Abner Dalrymple .429 and 7 RBIs. Post Season Year's Best Gloves Selected by National League Monday, August 31st, 1885: In baseball circles, a player who has good range, a good arm and good hands is a great catch. Clubs strive to be strong in the field, especially "up the middle." Solid defenders can make a difference in the outcome of tight games and tight pennant races. The Glove Wizard Awards for 1885 in the National League go to these standout defenders: Pitcher: Jim Tyng (Brooklyn Grays) Catcher: Jack Rowe (Boston Beaneaters) First Baseman: John Reilly (Boston Beaneaters) Second Baseman: Bill Greenwood (Pittsburg Alleghenys) Third Baseman: Ned Williamson (Boston Beaneaters) Shortstop: Jack Glasscock (Cincinnati Red Stockings) Left Fielder: Mike Mansell (Chicago White Stockings) Center Fielder: Curt Welch (Brooklyn Grays) Right Fielder: John Sneed (Philadelphia Quakers) AL Glove Wizard Award Winners Announced Monday, August 31st, 1885: "Ball hawk" is a good name for the members of the defensive elite, the players who make leather shine. The fielders who crashed the wall, leaped in the air, and dived in the hole better than any others during 1885 have been tabbed as the American League's Glove Wizard Award winners. Here are this year's best: Pitcher: Jim Whitney (Cleveland Blues) Catcher: Buck Ewing (Louisville Colonels) First Baseman: Roger Connor (Louisville Colonels) Second Baseman: Jack Farrell (Philadelphia Athletics) Third Baseman: Jerry Denny (Louisville Colonels) Shortstop: Frank Fennelly (Philadelphia Athletics) Left Fielder: Joe Sommer (Philadelphia Athletics) Center Fielder: George Gore (Washington Nationals) Right Fielder: Hugh Nicol (Cleveland Blues) NL's Top Rookie Selected Tuesday, September 1st, 1885: The debut season of Pittsburg's right fielder Sam Thompson was capped off today with the announcement that he has been crowned the 1885 National League Newcomer of the Year Award winner. Here are his season stats: 109 games played, a .291 average, 135 hits, 13 home runs, 35 walks and a .345 on-base percentage. Thompson also drove in 79 runs and scored 91 times. American League Picks Top Rookie Tuesday, September 1st, 1885: All the games have been played, all the votes have been counted and the recipient of the prestigious American League Newcomer of the Year Award is Jimmy Ryan of the Baltimore Orioles. This talented first-year performer hit .296 and put up a .350 OBP. In 108 games this year, the center fielder collected 125 hits in 423 at-bats, 7 home runs, 67 RBIs and scored 75 times. Boston Hurler Wins NL Outstanding Pitcher Award Thursday, September 3rd, 1885: The Boston Beaneaters have a rising superstar or maybe even a budding Hall-of-Famer in the making. It's Perry Werden, this year's National League Outstanding Pitcher Award selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance. Werden compiled a 41-10 record in 53 starts, tallied 202 strikeouts in 463.2 innings and recorded a 2.10 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .226 batting average against him. Welch Takes AL Outstanding Pitcher Award Thursday, September 3rd, 1885: The Outstanding Pitcher Award for 1885 has been presented and the American League winner is Mickey Welch of Louisville. "It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Welch. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Colonels star told reporters. Welch excelled with an impressive 39-14 record in 54 starts. In 465 innings he yielded 402 hits and 97 walks, while striking out 213 and compiling a fine 1.78 ERA. Kelly Selected NL's Top Batter Friday, September 4th, 1885: King Kelly should get a big payoff next year on the heels of his performance in 1885 -- a season that earned him the National League Outstanding Hitter Award. In what could be his last season in Cincinnati, the catcher smacked 131 hits, 21 doubles, 7 triples, 7 home runs and 58 RBIs while hitting .334 with 72 runs scored. Roger Connor Captures AL Outstanding Hitter Award Friday, September 4th, 1885: It was a season to remember for Roger Connor. He was one of the most dangerous men in the league when he had a bat in his hand, and the American League announced today that he has won the Outstanding Hitter Award for 1885. The Louisville first baseman dominated opposing pitchers with a .321 batting average, 16 doubles, 11 triples, 7 home runs and 63 RBIs while compiling a .379 on-base percentage and scoring 86 runs. Trade Louisville, Philadelphia Confirm Swap Wednesday, September 16th, 1885: Trade winds have been blowing through Louisville. This time, a deal has materialized between the Colonels and Athletics. According to sources inside the organization, Louisville will ship 26-year-old center fielder Buttercup Dickerson to Philadelphia for 25-year-old first baseman Jerry Sweeney and 20-year-old catcher Mike Drissel. Draft Pool NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Friday, October 2nd, 1885: North American BaseBall League today released the final list of all players eligible for next month's rookie draft. Now that the list has been made official, close scrutiny of these players can be expected as scouts begin to review this year's up and coming talent. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Pete Conway, 18 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 2. Silver King, 17 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 3. NABL News: First-Year Player Draft Sunday, November 1st, 1885: Lost in all the hoopla of today's amateur draft are the young men who won't be going first, tenth or even fiftieth. Many of them will probably never make North American BaseBall League rosters, but one and all will be spurred on by the possibility that someday they'll be playing on a championship club. Detroit, Boston, Cincinnati, Detroit and Chicago will have the first five choices. BNN analysts report that these players are likely to be high picks in the 1885 draft: 1. Lefty Marr, 23 year-old right fielder out of college. 2. Silver King, 17 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 3. Elton Chamberlain, 17 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 4. Awards Top Fielders Honored by National League Thursday, September 23rd, 1886: Who are the Glove Wizard Award winners? They are the guys that steal outs. The 18-year-old starter registered a 20-18 record this season in 38 starts. Over 319 innings he gave up 274 hits, struck out 166 and issued 113 walks as he held the opposition to a .223 batting average and fashioned a 2.29 ERA. Schomberg Presented AL Newcomer of the Year Award Friday, September 24th, 1886: In his apprentice season in the American League, Otto Schomberg put up some quality statistics to sew up the prestigious Newcomer of the Year Award. This talented Washington right fielder posted a .290 average while accumulating 117 hits, 3 home runs, 53 RBIs and 79 runs scored in 113 games. He drew 90 walks as he fashioned a solid .421 on-base percentage. Great Season For Werden, Wins NL Outstanding Pitcher Award Sunday, September 26th, 1886: He's in the early phase of his career, but this past season Perry Werden performed like a veteran on the hill for the Boston Beaneaters and walked away with the National League Outstanding Pitcher Award in the process. He held opposing batters to a .238 average. AL's #1 Pitcher is Ward Sunday, September 26th, 1886: The Outstanding Pitcher Award for 1886 has been presented and the American League winner is John Ward of Louisville. "It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Ward. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Colonels star told reporters. Ward excelled with an impressive 31-7 record in 41 starts. In 351.2 innings he yielded 313 hits and 37 walks, while striking out 138 and compiling a fine 2.00 ERA. 1886 Premier Batter Selected By NL Monday, September 27th, 1886: Ed Swartwood went on a year-long hitting rampage against National League pitchers and collected the Outstanding Hitter Award for 1886. Post Season NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Saturday, October 2nd, 1886: The 1886 amateur draft pool was published today with barely a mention on BNN. But then, fans rarely get drawn into amateur drafts. The players are not known commodities and they're not tangible, recognizable names. They might be five years down the road, but casual fans don't get sucked in by "might be," they get excited about what is happening in the here and now. Over the next 30 days, scouts will assess their possibilities, run mock drafts and formulate their plans. To help them, North American BaseBall League has posted an interactive draft section on its Transactions page, which will be available for 30 days before draft day. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Wilbert Robinson, 23 year-old catcher out of college. 2. George Van Haltren, 20 year-old center fielder out of college. 3. Tom Daly, 20 year-old second baseman out of college. 4. Marty Sullivan, 23 year-old left fielder out of college. 5. Ed McKean, 22 year-old shortstop out of college. 6. Mike Mattimore, 28 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 7. Jocko Fields, 21 year-old catcher out of college. 8. Gus Weyhing, 20 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 9. Mark Baldwin, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 10. Mike Morrison, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school NABL News: First-Year Player Draft Monday, November 1st, 1886: Today is the North American BaseBall League amateur draft. Everyone wants to be drafted first, but the real story lies in the obscure pick several rounds removed from the limelight. These are players in the draft, who might never make the big leagues, but some who could just as easily become Hall of Famers. In any case, the quest to find that hidden nugget begins in earnest today. Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York and Washington will have the first five selections. BNN analysts have rated these players as likely high draft picks: 1. Tom Daly, 20 year-old second baseman out of college. 2. George Van Haltren, 20 year-old center fielder out of college. 3. Wilbert Robinson, 23 year-old catcher out of college. 4. Mark Baldwin, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 5. Mike Mattimore, 28 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 6. Gus Weyhing, 20 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 7. Ed McKean, 22 year-old shortstop out of college. 8. Lave Cross, 20 year-old third baseman out of college. 9. Jocko Fields, 22 year-old catcher out of college. 10. Marty Sullivan, 24 year-old left fielder out of college. Athletics draft picks SP Henry Gruber (Real Life: 61-78 3.67 in 5 seasons) 1B Willard Brown (RL: .261 avg in 9 seasons) 3B Ed Flynn (RL: .185 avg in 1 season) C Bill Collins (RL: .167 avg in 4 seasons of 5 games total) Off to 1887 ![]() ![]()
