TWIWBL 16.4: Series XIII Notes – Marvin Miller Division
#Birmingham Black Barons
In a blowout loss to Chicago, 3B Pie Traynor hit a homerun in his first WBL at-bat. Tim Hudson cemented his spot in the rotation, moving to 4-0 with over 7 strong innings in a 4-3 win over Chicago. Recently moved into the closer role, Juan Rincon picked up his 2nd save and Tom Herr, Bob Nieman, and Eddie Mathews had 2 hits each. The American Giants were sailing along until, in the bottom of the 4th, Birmingham suddenly exploded for 5 runs behind a grand slam from Troy Tulowitzki. The Black Barons kept pouring it on, ending up with a 14-3 win. Billy Southworth has 3 hits including 2 triples, Del Crandall--replacing an injured Gene Tenace--went 3-for-3 with 3 runs and 3 RBIs and Herr added 3 hits in pushing his average back towards .350. Traynor continued his torrid start, going 2-for-5 with another homerun, and is now hitting .600 in his first few games for the club. With Tenace's injury still being diagnosed, the Black Barons went ahead and sent him to the DL, recalling Dale Murphy--who hasn't done any better at AAA than he did before being sent down--and reinstating Al Schweitzer from the DL (Fred Fussell was sent back to AAA). #Brooklyn Royal Giants Don Drysedale put in another strong start, but wasn't around to see Ron Cey stroke a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 10th, lifting Brooklyn to a 6-5 victory over Homestead. The win went to Watty Clark, who moved to 3-1 with 2 innings of scoreless relief. Roy White had 3 hits, and he and Dan Brouthers both went deep. In a game that saw Dutch Leonard become the WBL's first 7 game loser, Tommy Hanson made his WBL debut by striking out the first 4 batters he faced. #Miami Cuban Giants Miami destroyed Los Angeles 18-3, with Will Clark going 4-for-4 with 4 runs and 4 RBIs. Both Clark (his 11th) and Charlie Bennett (his 3rd) went deep, and Bennett drove in 5. The news wasn't all good: Ramon Martinez was sailing along, allowing only 2 hits and no runs into the 6th inning when he had to be removed from the game with tricep pain. It was enough to get his 3rd win of the year, but he'll miss about six weeks. Dalier Hinojosa was waived to make room for Dontrelle Willis on the roster. Steve Brown was returned to AAA as Rube Waddell came off the DL. #Portland Sea Dogs Dizzy Trout allowed only 2 hits through 8 innings (1 a 2-run homerun by Ernie Banks) in an 11-3 blowout win for Portland. Five Sea Dogs hit homeruns (Jeff Burroughs, Kent Hrbek, Gil Hodges, Harry Hooper, and Adrian Beltre), and Hodges and Ivan Rodriguez had 3 RBIs each. Bert Blyleven threw a complete game, 4 hit, 132 pitch shutout as the Sea Dogs blew out the House of David, 11-0. Buddy Bell hit a 3-run homerun, and Rodriguez and Fred Dunlap had 3 hits each. Rodriguez and Hrbek also went deep for Portland. #San Francisco Sea Lions Lefty Grove had a no-hitter through 6 innings as the Sea Lions defeated Philadelphia, 9-1. Jack Clark had 3 hits and 3 RBIs for San Francisco and Cy Perkins hit his first homerun of the year, a 3 run shot to seal the victory for Grove, who improved to 5-2 on the year Rickey Henderson was caught stealing after 28 consecutive thefts when the Stars' Sherm Lollar gunned him down.

TWIWBL 16.5: Hope He Got Room Service!
#Wandering House of David
George Gore's fast return from injury meant Anthony Rizzo's stay in the big leagues was one overnight, and no games.

Series XII Featured Game: Cleveland Spiders @ New York Gothams
{ Whoops. This never got published from about 10 game days ago. }
The second game between the Cleveland Spiders and the New York Gothams saw the Spiders' Bob Feller (4-4, 5.09 ERA) facing off against the Gothams' Sad Sam Jones (3-3, 3.28). Feller's peripheral numbers aren't great, although his strikeout rate is impressive, while Jones has been one of the hottest starting pitchers in the league. Feller struggled more, but neither pitcher did very well. Cleveland opened the scoring in the top of the first, with Johnny Bates (who reached to lead off the game on an error by New York's Pinky Higgins at 3B) coming home on an RBI double from John Ellis. But the bottom of the first saw New York provide a strong response. Feller sandwiched strikeouts of Jimmy Sheckard and Buster Posey around a double by Higgins, but, after Willie Mays walked, Johnny Callison ripped a double scoring two and--after another walk--RBI singles by Joe Adcock and Brandon Crawford gave the Gothams a 4-1 advantage. Cleveland would claw one back in the top of the 4th, when Jake Stahl led off the inning with a solo homerun. But again Feller would struggle in the bottom of an inning where his team scored in the top of the frame, and New York would add 2 more runs on two hits and two walks, with RBIs from Higgins and Mays extending the lead to 6-2. That would be it for Feller, as Mel Harder replaced him in the bottom of the 5th. It wasn't much better, as Adcock, Cookie Rojas, and Sheckard each hit doubles, making the score 8-2 and seeming to send the Gothams on their way to a comfortable victory. The Spiders finally got to Jones again in the top of the 7th, with an RBI from Louis Santop and Stahl's second homerun of the game (moving him into double digits on the year) chasing him from the game in favor of Al Mays. That made the score 8-5, and New York added another run in the bottom of the frame, extending it to a four run lead heading to the 8th inning. Mays retired Rowland Office to start the inning, but then gave up 3 walks and 2 singles, exiting with the bases loaded and the score 9-7. New York turned to Mike Norris, one of their more reliable bullpen arms so far this season. Norris had one of his worst outings of the year, giving up an RBI single to Ellis, walking Stahl to drive in another run, and hitting Evan Longoria to give Cleveland a 10-9 lead in an inning where the Spiders sent 10 batters to the plate. We weren't done, though: Cleveland turned to Cory Gearrin in relief of Stan Coveleski with Gearrin entering the contest with one out and a runner on first. He struck out McCovey for the second out, but then walked two batters to load the bases. Rojas sent a ball to center that Office seemed to lose sight of, turning to see it sail over his head for a bases-clearing double. Higgins would add an RBI single, and we headed to the 9th with the Gothams back in front, 13-10. Despite surrendering a double to Santop, New York's closer, Brian Wilson, was able to slam the door, earning his fifth save of the year. Norris picked up both his third blown save and his second win and Mays--despite giving up 5 runs, 3 walks, and 2 hits in under an inning--picked up a hold. Gearrin took the loss, but in the end, the poor outings from Feller and Harder just dug too deep of a hole. Santop went 3-for-6 with 2 RBI's, and Stahl had 3 hits and 4 RBIs for Cleveland. If there was any offensive blame for the Spiders, it went to shortstop Bill Dahlen, who stranded seven runners. For New York, the offensive star was Rojas, who scored 3 times and drove in 4 with his 3 hits. Higgins also had 3 hits and 3 RBIs. Perhaps most surprisingly, the Gothams' best player, Buster Posey, went 0-for-5 on the day. The pitching staffs combined to allow 28 hits and 17 walks. Ouch. CLE 10 (Gearrin 0-4, 3 BSv) @ NYG 13 (Norris 2-1, 3 BSv; Wilson 5 Sv; Mays 1 H) HRs: CLE - Stahl 2 (10) Box Score #Other Games of Note Birmingham and Portland combined for 7 homeruns in an 8-7 victory for the Black Barons. For Birmingham, Eddie Mathews, Curtis Granderson, and Frank McCormick all went deep; for the Sea Dogs, Bobby Murcer, Buddy Bell, Fred Dunlap, and Ivan Rodriguez all found the seats. BBB 7 (Spahn 2-5) @ POR 8 (Munoz 2-1, 1 BSv; Myers 1 H; Santana 16 Sv) HRs: BBB - Mathews (9), McCormick (5), Granderson (4); POR - Murcer (8), Bell (9), Dunlap (2), Rodriguez (2) Box Score Philadelphia edged Brooklyn with a walk-off single by Gavvy Cravath scoring Chase Utley in the bottom of the 11th inning. The game was notable for the very strong starts by both the Stars' Steve Carlton (6.1 IP, 1 run) and the Royal Giants' Don Sutton (8 IP, 2 runs). Brooklyn's Dick Redding took the loss, despite pitching well enough in relief while Bob Howry--Philadelphia's usual closer--got the win with 2 scoreless innings to close out the game. BRK 2 (Redding 0-1) @ PHI 3 (Howry 1-2; Reed 4 BSv) [11 Innings] HRs: none Box Score Indianapolis carried a 4-1 lead into the 9th, with closer Rob Dibble on the mound against Chicago. They got there largely on a key double by Davey Concepcion and 6 stolen bases in support of just shy of 8 innings of 1-run pitching from a commanding David Price. But Dibble imploded after Luke Appling reach on an error by Ed Charles (who was in the game as a defensive replacement) to start the inning. After getting an out, Dibble hit a batter and gave up 2 hits, including an RBI single by Eddie Collins that left the bases loaded. Joe Jackson walked, forcing in another run, Frank Thomas hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game, and Duffy Lewis singled to right, scoring Collins for the Chicago win. IND 4 (Dibble 2-2, 3 BSv; Carroll 2 H) @ CHI 5 (Dixon 2-1) HRs: none Box Score

Series XIV Preview: Birmingham Black Barons @ New York Gothams
We last focused on the Birmingham Black Barons in Series III and on the New York Gothams in Series II.
Since then, their fortunes have diverged significantly, with Birmingham 12 games back in the Marvin Miller Division at 22-32 and the Gothams only 1/2 game behind Los Angeles in the Bill James Division at 28-25. So we go into this series expecting a dominant performance from the Gothams. #Birmingham Black Barons The bright spots are, as you may guess from their record, few and far between. Offensively, the story of the year has to be 2B Tom Herr, who has come out of nowhere to lead the team regulars in all 3 categories of his 348/384/464 slash line. Other than Herr, there are some reasons for optimism, as Pie Traynor, Bob Nieman, Del Crandall, and Al Schweitzer have all hit well in very limited opportunities (Crandall and Traynor are recent recalls from AAA, Schweitzer has just returned from the DL). Eddie Mathews has 9 homeruns to lead the team, while Hank Aaron has 28 RBIs. Herr has a parallel on the mound, where Tim Hudson has moved from AAA into the rotation, going 4-0 with a 2.51 ERA, although in under 30 innings (3 relief appearances and 3 starts). Scott Baker leads the team in wins at 5-3, but has an ERA over 5. Alejandro Pena, with a 4-4 record and a 3.76 ERA, has probably been Birmingham's most dependable starter. #New York Gothams The Gothams' offense revolves around Buster Posey (347/433/568) and Willie Mays (354/408/561), but the surprise of the season is probably SS Eugenio Suarez, who continues to hit for power, at 304/349/506 on the season. Posey and Mays have 9 homeruns each, with Mays leading the team with 46 RBIs. Two minor league callups have been impactful, with Wes Westrum (318/375/727) taking over the backup C role behind Posey and Yasiel Puig becoming a nearly everyday player, with an OPS just under .800. The starting pitching has been a little uneven: while Juan Marichal (6-1), Mickey Welch (5-2), and Christy Mathewson (5-5) have a lot of victories, they all have pretty high ERA's. New York's best starter has probably been Sad Sam Jones, who is 3-3, but has an ERA of 3.49. The bullpen has been excellent, with Mike Norris (2-1, 1 Sv, 3 H, 1.91 ERA) and Robb Nen (4 Sv) setting up Brian Wilson, who has 6 saves and a 2.40 ERA. #Series Matchups Birmingham's projected starter first: Scott Baker (5-3, 5.08 ERA) @ Sad Sam Jones (3-3, 3.49 ERA); Dick Rudolph (3-4, 4.52 ERA) @ Christy Mathewson (5-5, 4.96 ERA); Tim Hudson (4-0, 2.51 ERA) @ Mickey Welch (5-2, 6.04 ERA); Sam Streeter (2-3, 5.00 ERA) @ Gaylord Perry (2-4, 3.56 ERA). You have to think the Gothams will take this series, with a sweep a distinct possibility.

Series XIV Featured Matchup: Birmingham Black Barons @ New York Gothams
Preview here
#Game One: Scott Baker @ Sad Sam Jones Win-Loss records can be so deceiving. Birmingham's Scott Baker sits at 5-3, despite an ERA over 5.00 while the Gothams' Sad Sam Jones is pushing for consideration as an all-star, despite a 3-3 record. Bob Nieman took Jones deep in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead for Birmingham, and Omar Infante doubled home Billy Southworth in the second to double it. Jones wouldn't get out of the 5th: Nieman led off with a double, went to third on a single from Eddie Mathews, and scored on a base hit from Hank Aaron. Del Crandall would plate another run with a sacrifice fly, and Carson Smith would relieve Jones. So much for the all star argument ... Baker, meanwhile, had allowed only 1 hit through 5 innings, and nothing else until Willie Mays doubled with 1 out in the bottom of the 7th. By that point, Birmingham had added 2 more runs, and led 6-0. Yasiel Puig drove the ball deep to left field with 2 outs, where it took an odd bounce, eluding Southworth's pursuit. Puig ended up with an inside-the-park homerun, and hits from Willie McCovey and Brandon Crawford chased Baker from the game. Harley Young relieved him, and gave up RBI hits to Cookie Rojas and Jimmy Sheckard, closing the score to 6-5. That was as close as it got, however, as Juan Rincon was able to close the door in the 9th, and the Black Barons opened the four game series with a victory. Matthews and Aaron had 3 hits each for Birmingham, who outhit New York 14-9. Baker, who ended up allowing 4 runs in his 6.2 innings did in fact earn his 6th victory of the year. After the game, Birmingham learned that Gene Tenace's injury will sideline him for 5 to 6 weeks. That was better news than the Gothams received, as they learned that Carl Hubbell would miss 2-3 months with his current DL stint. BBB 6 (Baker 6-3; Young 5 H; Bedrosian 1 H; Rincon 3 Sv) @ NYG 5 (Jones 3-4) HRs: BBB - Nieman (3); NYG - Puig (2) Box Score #Game Two: Dick Rudolph @ Christy Mathewson While Birmingham has, in Tom Herr, undoubtedly the surprise performance by an infielder so far in the WBL, the Gothams' Eugenio Suarez comes close with an OPS over .900. Suarez continued his strong season with a 2-run homerun off Dick Rudolph in the bottom of the 2nd. Meanwhile, Christy Mathewson had a no-hitter going until Hank Aaron led off the top of the 5th with a triple to centerfield over Willie Mays' head. Del Crandall followed with a fly to right field, but Carl Furillo's throw nailed Aaron trying to score from third. Mathewson gave up 3 consecutive hits to start the 6th, with Bob Nieman driving in 2 with a double. That tied the game, and when Nieman scored on a sacrifice fly by Eddie Mathews, Birmingham took the lead, 3-2. Yasiel Puig would tie the game in the bottom of the frame with an RBI double, placing the game firmly in the hands of the bullpens. Pete Donohue relieved Mathewson, and Larry Benton came on to pitch for Birmingham in the top of the 7th. Furillo and Puig singled off Benton in the 8th, bringing in Steve Bedrosian for Birmingham in relief of Harley Young. Mark Loretta greeted Bedrosian with a 2-run double, and Suarez--there's that man again--brought him home with a single to right. That gave the Gothams a 6-3 lead, with their closer, Brian Wilson, on the mound. It was enough, as Wilson only allowed a walk in picking up his 7th save, with the win going to Donohue and Benton taking the loss. Puig had 3 hits and Suarez 3 RBIs for the Gothams as they evened up the series. BBB 3 (Benton 0-1) @ NYG 6 (Donohue 1-0; Wilson 7 Sv) HRs: NYG - Suarez (4) Box Score #Game Three: Tim Hudson @ Mickey Welch Birmingham scored 2 in the top of the 2nd off Mickey Welch off an RBI single from Omar Infante, who later scored on an error by the Gotham's shortstop, Eugenio Suarez. A Welch wild pitch would score Hank Aaron in the 3rd, and a Curtis Granderson homerun in the 6th would extend the lead to 4-0, chasing Welch from the game. In the meantime, Birmingham's Tim Hudson only allowed 1 hit through 5 innings. New York would break through in the 6th when a Jimmy Sheckard single plated Suarez, who had walked to leadoff the frame. Willie Mays would lead off the 7th with his 10th homerun of the year, cutting the lead in half to 4-2. Hudson gave up another homerun, this one to Jimmy Sheckard, to leadoff the 9th, chasing Hudson and bringing in Juan Rincon. Rincon got one out, and then Willie Mays was injured beating a threw to first for the infield hit. Rincon got another out before giving up a single to Yasiel Puig, who took second when John Kerins--who replaced Mays as a pinch-runner--went first-to-third on the hit. Willie McCovey grounded out to first to end the game, but all attention for New York was on the health of their young centerfielder. Hudson moved to 5-0, keeping his ERA under 3.00, and Rincon picked up his 4th save. BBB 4 (Hudson 5-0; Rincon 4 Sv) @ NYG 3 (Welch 5-3) HRs: BBB - Granderson (5); NYG - Mays (10); Sheckard (6) Box Score #Game 4: Rain, Rain, Rain The 4th game of the series was rained out, to be made up in mid-August. Which means the Black Barons come out with a 2-1 series win, quite an unexpected result. #Series Notes Omar Infante, Hank Aaron, Curtis Granderson, and Bob Nieman each had 4 hits for Birmingham, with Nieman adding 3 RBIs. For the Gothams, Willie Mays went 5-for-11 and, more importantly, was declared healthy enough to play in New York's next game. Yasiel Puig also had 5 hits in the three games.

Series XIV Featured Game: Brooklyn Royal Giants @ San Francisco Sea Lions
Brooklyn had already lost the first 2 games of the series against San Francisco when they sent Dutch Leonard to the mound to face Diego Segui. The two pitchers were on dramatically different trajectories: Leonard, at 3-7 with an ERA approaching 5.00, was trying desperately to hold on to his place in the Royal Giants' rotation; Segui, on the other hand, had performed well enough since being recalled in mid-April to earn his 5th start of the season. His record was only 2-2, but his ERA was a sparkling 2.36.
Roy White would take Segui deep in the top of the first, but that would be the only run he allowed in 7 sparkling innings where he actually lowered his ERA to 2.18 before departing. Leonard matched him frame-for-frame, though, only giving up a run in the 4th, when a leadoff single by Ricky Henderson was followed by a double from Jack Clark and a sacrifice fly from Pedro Guerrero to tie the game at 1. So, after 7 innings, we had a 1-1 deadlock, with the game now in the hands of the two bullpens. They were not up to the task. Huston Street relieved Segui and gave up a 2-out, 2-run homerun to Duke Snider, scoring White and putting Brooklyn on top, 3-1. But Eric Gagne--who had been lights out for the Royal Giants all season--gave up a leadoff homerun to San Francisco's Cy Perkins, and then a triple to Dick Lundy. Lundy would score on a sacrifice fly by Henderson, and after 8 innings, we were tied at 3. Ken Howell set Brooklyn down in order in the top of the 9th, setting the stage for the bottom of the frame. Gagne got two outs, but then allowed a double to Wally Moon, prompting Brooklyn to bring in Trevor Hildenberger. Out came Reggie Jackson--triple crown and early season MVP candidate--to pinch hit. The crowd rose as one, the ever-present chant of REG-GIE, REG-GIE filling the air ... ... Jackson delivered, lifting an RBI single into right field that easily scored Moon for the walkoff victory for the Sea Lions. BRK 3 (Gagne 1-2, 3 B Sv) @ SFS 4 (Howell 2-2) HRs: BRK - Snider (13), White (6); SFS - Perkins (2) Box Score Other Notable Games Homestead suffered from an overly tired bullpen, as the Grays really had nobody to pick up the slack once starter Carlos Zambrano ran out of steam. Instead, Kansas City was able to chip away until scoring 3 in the bottom of the 9th, with Rogers Hornsby delivering the winning, walk-off single. Hornsby and Ted Simmons had 3 hits each and Ducky Medwick went 4-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Roberto Clemente had a strong game for the Grays in a losing effort, with 3 hits and 2 RBIs. HOM 8 (Lindblom 0-3, 3 B Sv; Linzy 1 H) @ KCM 9 (Kimbrel 2-1) HRs: n/a Box Score It was a wild night in Portland as the Sea Dogs held off a furious rally by Ottawa to hold on for an 11-10 victory. Freddy Parent hit 2 homeruns and Alex Rodriguez 1 for the Mounties while Jeff Burroughs, Bobby Murcer, and Harry Hooper all went deep for Portland. Murcer drove in 5 on 3 hits and Burroughs added 3 RBIs. OTT 10 (Griffith 1-5) @ POR 11 (Miller 3-0; Santana 18 Sv; Kern 5 H) HRs: OTT - Parent 2 (8), Rodriguez (4); POR - Burroughs (6), Murcer (9), Hooper (5) Box Score Despite a shaky outing that saw him surrender his first earned runs of the year, Aroldis Chapman did enough to earn his 10th save as Miami defeated Cleveland 7-6. The Cuban Giants got 2 hits each from Gary Sheffield and Carlos Moran and 2 RBIs from Jim Thome, while Jake Stahl had 3 hits and 3 RBIs (including a solo homerun off Chapman) for the Spiders. MCG 7 (Bridges 4-1; Chapman 10 Sv; Willis 1 H; Bauta 6 H) @ CLE 6 (Coveleski 3-1) HRs: CLE - Stahl (11) Box Score

TWIWBL 17.0: Series XIV Notes
May 30
As May comes to a close, the Los Angeles Angels, Baltimore Black Sox, New York Black Yankees, and Portland Sea Dogs sit atop their respective divisions. Only LA is below .600, with Baltimore--yes, Baltimore--continuing to be the best team in the WBL at 37-21. That said, the divisions continue to tighten: the four division leaders went 8-8 for the series. Awards The Houston Colt 45's Tony Gwynn was selected as the Player of the Week, going 14-for-25 (.560), raising his average over .300. Performances Dennis Martinez remains, probably, the best starting pitcher in the league, but his teammate Ned Garvin is quietly having a spectacular year, as is the unheralded Johnny Marcum of the Detroit Wolverines. The San Francisco Sea Lions' Reggie Jackson has surpassed the Black Yankees' Babe Ruth as the best hitter in the league, leading in batting average, on base percentage, and OPS. Ruth's teammate, Eric Davis, has led the league in RBI since week one, and has now tied Ruth for the homerun crown. But the New York Gothams' Willie Mays may be the league MVP: spectacular offense and a league-leading 10 assists from the outfield (he's actually tied in that category with Ken Griffey, Jr. of the Ottawa Mounties). TWIWBL 17.1: Series XIV Notes – Bill James Division
#Detroit Wolverines
Johnny Marcum combined with Matt Anderson on a 7-hit shutout as the Wolverines topped the Red Sox 7-0. Hank Greenberg had 2 hits and 3 RBI, giving him 51 on the season as Marcum improved to 6-1 and lowered his ERA to 2.41. Ty Cobb and Bob Bailey each had 3 hits, with Cobb adding 3 RBIs, but the stars for Detroit were really Justin Verlander, Gene Conley, John Hiller, and Mike Henneman, who combined for over 5 innings of scoreless relief after starting pitcher Doyle Alexander couldn't make it out of the 3rd inning as the Wolverines came from behind for a 7-6 win. Alexander was sent to AAA to make way for the return of Hank Aguirre from his rehab assignment. #Los Angeles Angels Despite a mediocre outing, Gerrit Cole improved to 8-3 on the year, becoming the WBL's first 8-game winner. Cole allowed 4 runs in under 6 innings, and was bailed out with excellent relief from Francisco Rodriguez and Jonny Venters, who earned his 3rd save in the 9-4 victory for the Angels. Bobby Grich had 3 hits, and Doug Radar and Elmer Valo drove in 2 runs apiece. #Memphis Red Sox In a seesaw game, the Red Sox were rewarded with a walkoff victory when Mookie Betts singled in the bottom of the 10th. Bill White had 3 hits including a homerun, and Joe Beggs got his first win of the year. #Wandering House of David Phil Regan heads to the DL for a couple weeks with elbow inflammation, prompting the House of David to recall hard-throwing, thirty-three year old, Lee Smith from AAA. A 5-run 7th inning propelled the House of David to a come-from-behind, 8-7 win over Chicago. Elrod Hendricks had 2 hits, including his 10th homerun of the year, and Ryne Sandberg added 3 hits as well as Rollie Fingers moved to 3-0 on the year and Bruce Sutter picked up his 3rd save.

TWIWBL 17.2: Series XIV Notes – Cum Posey Division
#Chicago American Giants
Despite committing 4 errors, Chicago blew out the House of David 14-5 behind 4 hits from Dick Allen and 3 hits and 5 RBIs from Mike Fiore. The win went to Tricky Nichols, who improves to 5-2 in an outing that should also help rest the tired American Giants' bullpen. Dave Nilsson hit 2 homeruns and the Chicago bullpen survived some shaky moments--most notably a 3-run homerun by Dan Ford in the top of the 9th--as the American Giants beat the House of David 8-7. Shoeless Joe Jackson had 3 hits, and Frank Smith won his 2nd game of the year with a decent start. Eddie Collins went 4-for-4 with 2 homeruns and Carlton Fisk and Fiore drove in 3 each as the American Giants put up 15 hits and 12 runs. The bad news was their pitchers gave up 18 hits--but only 9 runs, so Chicago beat the House of David once again, this time 12-9. #Houston Colt 45's Stubby Overmire finally got his first victory of the year with another strong performance, delivering 8 innings of 5-hit, 2-run ball against Los Angeles. Gentleman Jim O'Rourke had 3 hits including his 3rd homerun of the year and 5 RBIs for Houston and Carlos Correa drove in 3 runs as well. With Leon Day on the DL for 10 days with a shoulder injury, Houston brought Bones Ely back from AAA. The Colt 45's also activated Casey Stengel from the DL, sending DJ LeMahieu to AAA. #Kansas City Monarchs Andy Pettite allowed 2 hits in 6 innings and Connie Johnson followed it with 3 perfect innings of relief as the Monarchs beat the Grays, 9-1. Rogers Hornsby and Gene Freese had 2 hits each and Hornsby hit a 3-run homerun (his 6th) and Albert Pujols a solo shot (his 9th). Pettite improved to 5-3 and Johnson picked up his first save. Lou Brock had 3 hits and 4 stolen bases, scoring twice and helping the Monarchs ease to a 7-3 win over the Grays. Frank Castillo evened his record at 4-4 with 6 solid innings and Jose Rijo gave up 1 hit in 3 innings for his first save, although it may not be enough to keep Rijo in the WBL. Robinson Cano led the way in a 15-5 demolition of Homestead, going 5-for-5 with 4 runs scored, 4 RBIs, and 2 homeruns. Ted Simmons and Boog Powell added 3 hits each with Powell and Brock driving in 3 each. #Ottawa Mounties Over 13 innings, the difference between Ottawa and Portland was ... a wild pitch. In the top of the 13th, Anthony Rendon, who hit his 3rd homerun in the first inning to give the Mounties an early lead, singled off Elmer Brown. He moved to second on a walk to Carlos Delgado and to third when Brown induced a double play from Freddy Parent. Then Brown uncorked a wild pitch, giving the Mounties the 3-2 lead, which Johnny Podgajny was able to preserve in the bottom of the frame. Rendon went 3-for-6 in the game, with 2 runs and 2 RBIs. The victory went to Gary Lavelle, who moved to 3-1. The injury news on Tom Henke was not good: he tore a ligament in his elbow, and will miss close to a year. Jimmy Key was recalled from AAA, with Lavelle the logical candidate to move into the closer role for the Mounties.

TWIWBL 17.3: Series XIV Notes – Effa Manley Division
#Cleveland Spiders
John Ellis drove in 5 with 2 homeruns, one a grand slam, and Cy Young threw a complete game allowing only 6 hits as the Spiders beat Miami, 6-2. Young improved to 5-2 on the year. #Homestead Grays Hal Carlson will miss just over a month with an elbow injury, prompting Homestead to recall Billy Pierce from AAA. More from necessity than a reward for their performance, both Carlos Zambrano and John Candelaria returned to the starting rotation for the Grays. Francisco Liriano was recalled from his rehab assignment, with Bartolo Colon returning to AAA. #Indianapolis ABC's Edd Roush went 4-for-4 and Red Faber threw a solid 6+ innings, improving his record to 4-3 as the ABC's beat the best team in the WBL, Baltimore, 4-2. Roush hit his 2nd homerun of the season and Joe Morgan his 1st, and Rob Dibble pitched a scoreless 9th for his 7th save. Johnny Bench hit 2 homeruns, and the ABC's beat the Black Sox 3-1, with Dolf Luque out-dueling Dennis Martinez. Luque improved to 4-5 with 7 strong innings, and Dibble struck out the side for his 8th save of the season. #New York Black Yankees New York's Waite Hoyt started off their series against Philadelphia with a 4 hit shutout, his best performance of the year. Eric Davis and Don Mattingly hit homeruns, and Thurman Munson, Babe Ruth, and Mattingly had 2 hits each as the Black Yankees won, 4-0. 3 hits from Davis, Lou Gehrig, and most surprisingly of all, Willie Randolph--who got his average up to .200 on the day--led the Black Yankees to a 10-3 win over the Stars. Jack Scott improved to 5-3 with 8 strong innings of work for New York. #Philadelphia Stars George Hendrick hit 2 homeruns to lead the Stars to a victory over the New York Black Yankees. Perhaps more importantly for Philadelphia, Jaret Wright only allowed 1 run in 7 innings in leveling his record at 2-2.

TWIWBL 17.4: Series XIV Notes – Marvin Miller Division
#Miami Cuban Giants
Martin Dihigo, who has struggled since his return from his first stint on the DL, is back there with elbow inflammation, and expected to miss about 3 weeks. Paul Molitor, who hit well in his time at AAA, was recalled to take his place. Needing a starter, Dontrelle Willis' stay at Miami was cut short, as the lefty was sent back to AAA after only 1/3 of an inning. Roenis Elias was recalled, with John Munyan--who started the year in Miami but struggled--being released. #Portland Sea Dogs Walter Johnson looked virtually unhittable, and in one sense he was, allowing only 3 hits over 6+ innings. But he also gave up 6 walks, a balk, and hit a batter, giving up 4 runs in a 6-3 loss to Ottawa, falling to 6-2 on the season.

Series XV Preview: New York Black Yankees @ San Francisco Sea Lions
It hasn't been too long since we visited these two teams: the San Francisco Sea Lions were featured in series IX and the New York Black Yankees in Series XI.
#New York Black Yankees Really, not a lot has changed. The Black Yankees are still in first place, they still look like a dominant team, and they still have no idea what to do at 2B. They are, pretty clearly, the best offensive team in the WBL, and while the production of Babe Ruth (1.122 OPS, 19 homeruns, 51 runs, 54 RBIs) and Lou Gehrig (somehow, a quiet 1.033 OPS) was expected, that of Albert Belle (.981 OPS in less than a full time role) and especially Eric Davis (.928 OPS, tied with Ruth for the league lead at 19 homeruns and leading the league with 59 RBIs) was not. Add in Thurman Munson, who has an argument to be included in the elite catchers of the league and steady production from Mickey Mantle and Don Mattingly, and you have a nightmare for opposing pitchers. The only black mark are the continued struggles of Willie Randolph (.622 OPS) and Craig Counsell (.577 OPS) at 2B. Randolph has actually been hitting much better of late, raising his OPS about 20 points in the last month. Counsell would be demoted immediately if there were any other options--right now, the minor league system is totally barren in the middle infield. Ron Guidry (5-5, 3.67 ERA) has struggled a little bit more of late, although he still leads the WBL in strikeouts and remains the ace of the staff. At the other end, Dave Righetti (3-4, 5.43 ERA) seems to have lost his mojo and may actually be facing demotion to the bullpen. The other starters--Red Ruffing, Waite Hoyt, and Jack Scott--have combined for a 16-5 record with solid secondary numbers. #San Francisco Sea Lions The Sea Lions are, perhaps, more interesting. They trail Portland by 5 games in the Marvin Miller Division, and feel like a team that is underperforming. Part of the conundrum remains what to do with Rickey Henderson, who leads the WBL in walks (47) and stolen bases (41), but has an OPS barely over .700. He still has an OBP around .400, so he holds on to his leadoff spot, but the choice is much clearer when he's doing something besides walking to help out at the top of the order. San Francisco has a frightening big three behind Henderson, led by triple crown contender Reggie Jackson, who is leading the league in batting average and on base percentage with an OPS of 1.134. Bobby Bonds is slashing 331/382/577 and Pedro Guerrero--who started the year at AAA--continues to hack, posting a .933 OPS. Add in 9 homeruns from Jimmy Bloodworth at 2B and 10 homeruns from Jack Clark, as well as the emergence of Dick Lundy as a solid infield presence, and you have a very strong offensive team. So the problem must be on the mound, right? It's certainly not in the bullpen. Rod Beck has 14 saves and an ERA of 0.66, and the rest of the back end--Ron Robinson, Chad Bradford, and Ken Howell--have great numbers. Lefty Grove hovers just outside the elite starters of the league, at 5-2 with a 3.23 ERA and Diego Segui has been fantastic since he joined the rotation (2-2 with a 2.18 ERA). But beyond that ... well. Cy Falkenberg, Jim Devlin, and Eddie Plank have all struggled, with Devlin replaced in the rotation by Charlie Root. So there it is: if the starters can do their job, the Sea Lions have a shot. #Projected Starters Black Yankees starter listed first. Dave Righetti (3-4, 5.43) @ Lefty Grove (5-2, 3.23) Waite Hoyt (4-1, 3.84) @ Eddie Plank (4-3, 4.27) Ron Guidry (5-5, 3.67) @ Cy Falkenberg (3-2, 5.11) Jack Scott (5-3, 3.75) @ Diego Segui (2-2, 2.18) It could be a great series, but I think it's more likely the Black Yankees take 3 of the 4--losing to Grove and winning the rest.

TWIWBL Special Edition: All Star Preview II – AL Starting Pitchers
{ With under three weeks until the All Star Teams are announced, we're looking at what's changed since our original previews. }
Initial preview here, selecting Gerrit Cole, CC Sabathia, Tricky Nichols, Ed Walsh, and Dennis Martinez. It doesn't look terribly different at this point. Los Angeles' Cole (7-3) and Baltimore's Martinez (7-1) are the only 7 game winners in the league, so you have to assume they make it, although Cole's 4.04 ERA will lead to some arguments. There can be little disagreement about Martinez, though, as El Presidente has a 3.16 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP for the best team in baseball. Behind them, Kansas City's Andy Petitte (4-3, 3.31 ERA) and Sabathia (5-4, 3.65 ERA) deserve some consideration, as do the House of David's Jack Taylor (only a 3-5 record, but a sub-4 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP) and Chicago's Ben Sheets (5-3, 3.95 ERA, 1.21 WHIP). Nichols has fallen out of the conversation, and Walsh is on the DL for about a month, so they're no longer in the running. The AI does some interesting things, selecting Baltimore's Ned Garvin, Detroit's Johnny Marcum and Hal Newhouser, and the House of David's Bob Rush along with Martinez and Petitte. Garvin, Marcum, and Rush have just recently moved into their team's starting rotations. All three are strong choices, especially Garvin, who is 5-1 with a 2.09 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP in 8 relief appearances and 4 starts, but I'm still considering them as relievers at the moment. Newhouser is a decent possibility. He's made 7 starts, so it could all fall apart, but so far he looks like a potential ace, with only a 2-1 record, but a microscopic 1.93 ERA. Clearly, if he keeps that up over his next 3 or 4 starts, he'll warrant very strong consideration. So at this point I would go with Martinez as the starter, with Cole, Sabathia, Pettite and ... let's say the Gothams' Juan Marichal, who is 6-1, with a high ERA that is likely to drop (I have a fear that Newhouser will implode, or be injured over the next few weeks).

TWIWBL Special Edition: All Star Preview II – NL Starting Pitchers
{ With under three weeks until the All Star Teams are announced, we're looking at what's changed since our original previews. }
Initial preview here, selecting Walter Johnson (Portland), Don Drysedale (Brooklyn), Camilo Pascual (Miami), Ron Guidry (New York Black Yankees), and Cy Young (Cleveland). Johnson (6-1, 3.58 ERA), Drysedale (4-2, 2.71 ERA, which leads the league), and Guidry (5-4, 3.23 ERA) remain obvious choices, and while Young has fallen off a bit, Pascual, at 4-4 with a 3.19 ERA for a truly poor Miami team is likely still to make it. That leaves one slot, with San Francisco's Lefty Grove (5-2, 3.23 ERA) and Philadelphia's Ray Collins (6-2, 3.20 ERA) as the likely candidates, although a case still could be made for Young (4-2, 3.82 ERA, 1.25 WHIP). In addition to the 3 shoo-ins, the AI picks Collins, Grove, and Pascual along with Brooklyn's Frank Knauss and San Francisco's Diego Segui. Knauss has certainly pitched well, but he's only made 6 starts, and while he's gone 4-2 with a 2.76 ERA, it's just not enough yet to merit consideration. Segui has seen even fewer innings and, again, while a 2.36 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP are impressive, you have to be putting up Hal Newhouser numbers to make the all star team as a starter with that few innings. So we'll go with Walter Johnson as the starter (although he needs to win another game someday: Johnson has 2 no-decisions and 1 loss in his last 3 starts), along with Drysedale, Guidry, Grove, and Collins.

TWIWBL Special Edition: All Star Previews II – AL Relievers
{ With under three weeks until the All Star Teams are announced, we're looking at what's changed since our original previews. }
Preview I here, which selected Tom Henke, Jonathan Papelbon, Chuck Finley, Craig Kimbrel, and Adam Wainwright. This gets complicated pretty quickly: both Finley and Wainwright are now in their teams' starting rotations (Finley for Los Angeles, Wainwright for Kansas City), but both still are worthy of consideration. Finley is 2-0 with 4 holds, a 3.16 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP and Wainwright is 0-1 with 1 hold, a 2.35 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. For closers, Henke and Detroit's Mike Henneman continue to lead the way. Henke was injured in Ottawa's most recent game, so that will play a factor, but he's currently 0-3 with 12 saves for the Mounties. The problem is recent struggles have ballooned his ERA to 5.00--combine that with his injury, and he may no longer be in contention. Henneman is 1-2 with 10 saves and a 3.46 ERA, but he would probably be behind Memphis' Joe Beggs, who has yet to give up an earned run to go along with his 8 saves. For them, along with the New York Gothams' Brian Wilson (6 saves, 2.40 ERA), the next few weeks will be key. Kimbrel is still a likely choice, sitting at 1-1 with 8 holds and a 3.09 ERA for Kansas City, as is Memphis' Papelbon (0-3, 3 saves, 4 holds, 2.13 ERA, 1.07 WHIP). Baltimore's Ned Garvin has to receive strong consideration as well. Garvin has appeared in 12 games, starting 4 of them, and has a 5-1 record with 2 holds, a 2.09 ERA, and a 0.87 WHIP. Two more names to consider. The House of David's Bob Rush has 13 relief appearances and 1 start, having just moved into the rotation. So far, he is 4-1 with a 1.83 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP. The Gothams' Mike Norris continues to excel as well, appearing in 22 games out of the bullpen with a 2-1 record, 1 save, 3 holds, and a 1.91 ERA. The AI picks Garvin and Rush as starters, and then, in addition to Norris, Houston's Andrew Chafin, Memphis' Turk Farrell, and Baltimore's Buddy Groom. Of those, Groom makes sense, both on his own merit (4 holds, 1.91 ERA, 1.06 WHIP) and as a nod to Baltimore's overall record. Chafin has been quite good (3-1, 2.25 ERA), and Farrell is incomprehensible: 0-2 with a 3.51 ERA just doesn't cut it. So, given all that, I would go with Garvin, Kimbrel, Papelbon, Rush, and one of the closers. Let's say Beggs. But Groom has probably been more valuable than any of the closers, it's just wanting someone with some saves to be in there as well.

TWIWBL Special Edition: All Star Preview II – NL Relievers
{ With under three weeks until the All Star Teams are announced, we're looking at what's changed since our original previews. }
Preview I here, which selected Johan Santana, Terry Adams, Aroldis Chapman, Rheal Cormier, and Rob Dibble. Portland's Santana continues to be a lock, leading the league with 17 saves to go along with a 3.00 ERA and a 1-1 record. But after him, all of the closers have some question marks. San Francisco's Rod Beck has 11 saves in only 11 innings to go along with a microscopic 0.82 ERA and an even more impressive 0.45 WHIP. So the question there is if he can maintain that level of performance. The same question remains for Miami's Chapman--yet to allow a run in 13 innings, with 9 saves. Philadelphia's Bob Howry and Cleveland's Adams both have the saves (14 and 12, respectively), but Howry has an ERA of 4.58 and Adams a WHIP of 1.71. Brooklyn's Watty Clark may be the best candidate behind Santana, sitting at 3-1 with 10 saves, a 2.04 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. After those closers you would have to consider Philadelphia's duo of Ron Reed, who continues to be excellent, with 11 holds and a 2.83 ERA and Cormier, 4-0 with 4 holds and a 2.64 ERA. Brooklyn's Eric Gagne (6 holds, 2.74 ERA, 1.00 WHIP) and San Francisco's Ken Howell (1.61 ERA and 1.03 WHIP) have forced themselves into the conversation as well. The bullpens are deep here: Dibble is still pitching well for Indianapolis, and the New York Black Yankees' Ralph Citarella and San Francisco's Charlie Root have pitched themselves into the conversation as well. The AI goes with Cormier, Reed, Howell, and Birmingham's Hoyt Wilhelm (2.59 ERA in 18 appearances). I would go with Santana, Chapman, Robinson, Clark, and Howell. I think.

TWIWBL Special Edition: All Star Preview II – Catchers
{ With under three weeks until the All Star Teams are announced, we're looking at what's changed since our original previews. }
Preview I here. AL Catchers: Bill James & Cum Posey Divisions Original Selections: Buster Posey; Curt Blefary, Elrod Hendricks. Nothings really changed here. Detroit's Bill Carrigan is slashing 318/392/545, but he's their reserve backstop (even though he is clearly pushing Ed Bailey for more playing time). The Baltimore Black Sox's Blefary and the New York Gothams' Posey have OPS' over 1.000, with Blefary in the top 3 in the league in homeruns. Hendricks of the House of David is the only other backstop with an OPS over .900. Ottawa's Emil Gross has thrown out 37% of runners attempting to steal, but its nowhere near enough to move him even to the fringes of the conversations. So, we remain committed to the same trio, as does the AI. NL Catchers: Effa Manley & Cum Posey Divisions Original Selections: Joe Mauer, Johnny Bench, Josh Gibson. This gets difficult. And it's all Thurman Munson's fault. The New York Black Yankees' catcher is now slashing 317/367/540 for an OPS just over .900. Portland's Joe Mauer is a shoo-in: his OPS sits at exactly 1.000, with a slash line of 339/433/567. But the OPS' behind him run .940/.908/.894/882. Indianapolis' Johnny Bench has the .940. He also has 10 homeruns and 30 RBIs to lead this group, so let's say he's in. Here's the rest: Code:
Name Team OPS BA OPS SLG WAR CS% cERA Thurman Munson NYA .908 .317 .367 .540 1.7 27 3.93 Josh Gibson HOM .894 .319 .409 .485 2.1 30 5.92 John Ellis DET .882 .280 .331 .551 0.6 16 3.83 Munson has been behind the plate for the most innings in the league--10 more than Gibson. Factor that into his cERA, and their nearly indistinguishable offensive numbers, and I think the third spot goes to him now. The AI picks all four--Mauer, Bench, Munson, and Gibson. (Ellis is really just listed for context and because he does have an outside shot at making it.)

TWIWBL Special Edition: All Star Preview II – First Basemen
{ With under three weeks until the All Star Teams are announced, we're looking at what's changed since our original previews. }
Preview I here. #AL - Bill James & Cum Posey Divisions Original selections: Hank Greenberg, Boog Powell, Frank Thomas. The first spot is easy: Detroit's Greenberg sits at 320/377/625 with 14 homeruns and 51 RBIs. So, he's in. Chicago's Frank Thomas is clearly an all-star, but he has only played 20 games at 1B, so we're going to slide him over to DH in all likelihood. Baltimore's Frank Robinson has played even less 1B than Thomas, and will be considered with the outfielders. Taking those two out of the running leads to it getting a little more interesting. Memphis' Bill White has improved to 312/395/537 and Baltimore's Dan McGann has been steady all year at 306/411/481. Kansas City's Powell has slumped all the way to 282/386/446, and while that's perfectly respectable, his argument for inclusion here is certainly weaker now. Add to the mix that McGann has been the best defensive 1B of the group by quite a bit, and the selection now should be Greenberg, White, and McGann. Of this group, the AI only includes Greenberg (Thomas is selected as the 2nd 1B, Robinson in the OF). #NL - Effa Manley & Marvin Miller Divisions Original selections: Lou Gehrig, Kent Hrbek, Mike Epstein. There is similar upheaval here: it turns out New York's Gehrig has only played 15 games at 1B (he plays as a DH, with Don Mattingly manning the bag). So he's out of contention here. Portland's Hrbek and Homestead's Epstein remain clear selections. Hrbek is slashing 327/398/599 with 15 homeruns; while Epstein is at 331/433/548. The third slot is really pretty clear as well, actually: Cleveland's Jake Stahl's power output has moved him into contention with a slash line of 287/351/592. That makes it Hrbek, Epstein, and Stahl. The AI actually goes with those three, plus Gehrig, so it's not a terribly controversial choice.

TWIWBL Special Edition: All Star Previews II – Second Basemen
{ With under three weeks until the All Star Teams are announced, we're looking at what's changed since our original previews. }
Preview I here. #AL - Bill James & Cum Posey Divisions Original selections: Eddie Collins, Tim Raines, Larry Gardner. After struggling briefly on his return from the DL, Chicago's Collins has resumed being the class of the second basemen in the league with a 309/431/517 slash line. He's the clear starter. But after that, it gets awfully muddled. Purely by OPS, you would go with Kansas City's Rogers Hornsby (309/390/500) and Baltimore's Gardner (288/419/464). But Ottawa's Raines certainly deserves strong consideration (and he may be Ottawa's only representative in the midseason classic). Raines' OPS is a shade worse at 282/365/445, but he leads the group with 7 homeruns and 38 runs scored, and is way ahead with 38 steals, putting him behind only Collins in WAR (2.5 to 1.8). Los Angeles' Bobby Grich is also at a 1.8 WAR, slashing 300/374/485. Grich sits just behind Collins and the New York Gothams' Cookie Rojas in the defensive rankings. (Houston's HR Johnson--who has hit well enough to be in the conversation--has been among the worst defensive 2B in the league, moving him clearly out of contention at this point.) So, what to do ... This is a position I expect to change a little as the month plays out, but right now, I would go with Raines and Gardner behind Collins. But I could also be convinced to carry four to include Hornsby. And, if Baltimore drops off as a team, that probably weakens Gardner's argument as well. Somewhat inexplicably, the AI goes with Collins, Johnson, and Raines. #NL - Effa Manley & Marvin Miller Divisions Original selections: Chase Utley, Jimmy Bloodworth, Tom Herr. Brooklyn's Jackie Robinson presents a bit of a conundrum, having split his time almost equally between 1B and 2B. He clearly hasn't hit well enough to make it as a 1B, but his 291/350/511 is pretty spectacular for a middle infielder. For now, I'm going to punt on him though, and perhaps add a utility category for each league in the final selections. The feel-good story of the season so far, Birmingham's Herr, is not only still performing at an all-star level, he's likely the starter right now, hitting 338/381/455. It doesn't seem sustainable, but it didn't at the last update either. San Francisco's Bloodworth sits just behind him in OPS at 288/328/488 with 9 homeruns and 25 RBIs. Utley has been in a slump, but he remains the only other candidate with an OPS over .800, and at 263/335/481 still would make it, although a surge by Homestead's Davey Johnson or Indianapolis' Joe Morgan could remove him. Utley and Bloodworth have been the best defensive 2B so far, which helps them here as well. So I would stick with the same three, just in a different order. The AI selects only Herr, which is amusing.

TWIWBL Special Edition: All Star Previews II – Shortstops
{ With under three weeks until the All Star Teams are announced, we're looking at what's changed since our original previews. }
Preview I here. #AL - Bill James & Cum Posey Divisions Original Selections: George Wright, Bobby Wallace, & Freddy Parent. Baltimore's Wallace is is the likely starter here, slashing 325/427/471, but after him it gets difficult. Parent is hitting well for a shortstop, slashing 275/341/464, but he's been slightly less than a fulltime player for Ottawa. Behind those two, the House of David's Ernie Banks, Memphis' Vern Stephens, and Los Angeles' Wright are all pretty identical offensively, with OPS' in the .770s. Banks has 8 homeruns (as does Parent), and 31 RBIs to lead the group. Detroit's George Davis, Los Angeles' Wright, and Kansas City's Ozzie Smith have been the best defensive shortstops in the AL. So, given all that, I think we go with Wallace, Banks, and Wright. But if Parent continues to post an OPS over ,800 while staying in the lineup, he'll have to displace either Banks or Wright. The AI avoids the confusion, only selecting Wallace. #NL - Effa Manley & Marvin Miller Divisions Original Selections: Jim Fregosi, Derek Jeter, & Arky Vaughan. Homestead's Vaughan made the original list solely on the strength of his defense, and the conundrum continues: with an OPS of .670 to go along with the best defensive numbers in the league, Vaughan remains a borderline choice. Portland's Fregosi is the likely starter right now, slashing 281/344/444, and the Black Yankees' Jeter isn't that far behind at 288/335/415. So the two of them are in. After that, it's between Vaughan and three others: San Francisco's Dick Lundy is hitting well enough to make it, but just recently moved from a reserve role to the starting lineup; Birmingham's Troy Tulowitzki and Miami's Robin Yount are both hitting around the same level as Vaughan. So, right now, I would stick with same trio as before, but with a sense that one of the others--perhaps Lundy, perhaps Yount--gets on a hot streak to force the conversation. The AI ducked the issue again, selecting only Fregosi.
