What’s Up, Doc?

By Nik Hill, Head Commentator, PBL-TV

Well I know we are only 6 weeks into the inaugural PBL season and what we are all convinced will turn out to be a long and storied career, but 9 starts in and the question begs: What exactly is wrong with Dwight Gooden?

The 19-year-old native of Tampa, FL came into this league with just about the biggest wraps imaginable on him. All the talk revolved around the monumental number of games his Gothams would win with the Gooden-Walter Johnson-Jacob deGrom 1-2-3 punch at the top of its rotation.

That, of course, is not what has happened so far. While deGrom (4-1 / 2.84 / 74 FIP-) has started brilliantly and Johnson (4-3 / 4.28) held his own, Gooden is languishing at a horrid 0-7 with an ERA of nearly four-and-a-half.

So, what gives?

Let’s start by looking at those 9 starts individually:

  • 4/2: 6 IP / 5 H / 3 ER / 5 BB / 6 K – NO DECISION (5-4 WIN) v LOSA
  • 4/7: 6 IP / 7 H / 3 ER / 3 BB / 6 K – 9-2 LOSS @ BOST
  • 4/12: 6 IP / 7 H / 5 ER / 1 BB / 5 K – 5-3 LOSS @ SEAT
  • 4/17: 9 IP / 8 H / 2 ER / 2 BB / 6 K – 2-0 LOSS v CONN
  • 4/22: 8.1 IP / 11 H / 4 ER / 3 BB / 9 K – NO DECISION (6-4 WIN) v NJER
  • 4/28: 6 IP / 7 H / 3 ER / 6 BB / 3 K – 3-2 LOSS v BOST
  • 5/3: 5 IP / 10 H / 5 ER / 2 BB / 4 K – 7-3 LOSS @ LASV
  • 5/8: 8 IP / 8 H / 1 ER / 2 BB / 12 K – 1-0 LOSS @ CONN
  • 5/13: 6 IP / 7 H / 3 ER / 3 BB / 6 K – 9-4 LOSS v PORT

A few things jump out from that list.

One is that it’s not as if he’s been getting badly shelled. In the two biggest losses Doc has suffered (4/7 and 5/13), most of the damage came after he had gone and the bullpen deployed. In fact, 5 of his 9 outings qualify as Quality Starts, and his 108 FIP- is only a good game or two away from league average.

Another is that, despite his lack of success, he’s still getting more than his fair share of strikeouts (8.75 K/9).

Apart from Opening Day and the game against Boston at end April, his control has been acceptable, especially for a flamethrower like he is.

He’s not having split-related issues either, with his ERA almost identical against LH and RH hitters. Lefties are definitely hitting him better, with a .323 BA vs .279 for righties, but it hasn’t done much damage in the overall scheme of things.

All of which might lead one to the conclusion that Doc has been fairly unlucky. With 6 of those 9 games decided by 2 runs or less, there’s undoubtedly some truth to that, and his offence hasn’t been much of a friend to him with just 1.6 RSG while Doc’s been on the mound. A .363 BABIP also hints that when facing him, batters have managed to hit ‘em where they ain’t at an above-average rate.

Still, the fact of the matter is that he’s simply been allowing too many baserunners – 14.54 per 9 innings – for him not to expect close games to go against him as often as not, and perhaps more so—as has been the case here. Until he gets this figure down – and by some margin, one would think – he will continue to underperform the lofty (perhaps unrealistic) expectations that have been foisted upon his narrow shoulders.

While I’m sure they are concerned about this poor start, I doubt the coaching staff at New York would be hitting panic stations yet, or anywhere near to. There are enough positive signs strewn among the wreckage of his season to date that, in concert with his irrefutable natural abilities, things will eventually sort themselves out and this period of his career will become nothing more than the first phrase in a trivia question.

For what it's worth, I still believe he’ll finish his career as one of the best pitchers in PBL history.

The problem with Gooden is he's from Tampa and can't pitch in cold weather. (That would be under 75 F.) I mean really, people there start burning their fireplaces at 65 F and at 60 F wear gloves and a knee length coat to walk the dog.

I suppose having spent many years there I should start following Indianapolis. I was to the new Victory Field there once before I left.

Didn't seem to affect him IRL. The snow that came in a bag was a bigger problem for Doc than the snow that fell from the sky...

BTW, my comments on the actions of long time residents when it gets "cold" is based on actual observations.

Game of the Week – Sunday, 14th May 1961

Kansas City Blues (22-17) @ New Orleans Pirates (18-21)
Green Canyon Park – New Orleans, LA; 8.05 pm
NORL: Jim Perry (5-3, 3.43)
KANC: Pete Alexander (4-3, 5.56)

Hello and welcome to another Game of the Week telecast, I’m Nik Hill. Tonight we are at Green Canyon Park in downtown New Orleans to watch the Pirates battle the Kansas City Blues, both of whom play in the PBL’s South Division. A slightly overcast night here in the Big Easy, with just a hint of breeze blowing out to left.

The Pirates have been heading in the wrong direction of late with a 4-8 record this month that has left them last in the division, and they’ll be extra keen not to lose further ground to the third-placed Blues, currently four games to the good of them.

Jim Perry is starting for the home side tonight, and he has begun the season solidly with five wins and three losses, with an ERA in the mid-threes. He’s up against Pete Alexander, who I’m sure will be looking for an improvement on his performance to date, with opposition hitters lighting him up a bit with a .289 average to this point.

With the lively bats in both lineups and both bullpens having been problematic so far, this might be a bit of a runfest tonight if the starters get into strife, as was the case in the middle game of the first series between these two teams in mid-April, when the Blues torched them for 20 runs. Oddly, that came between two low-scoring wins for the Pirates. But their relievers have been on the nose to this point, with their 8+ ERA easily the worst in the SEL, and they’ll need to tighten that right up if they want to be competitive in the long run.
To talk about this and more with the man whose job it is to fix these sorts of problems, here’s Juliana Scott. Jules, I understand you and your guest go way back.

Juliana Scott: Thanks Nik, I have Pirates Manager Jim Leyland with me and yes, this is the man I did my first live interview with back a few years ago in Pittsburgh. In fact, he’s known me all of my life, haven’t you Uncle Jim?

Jim Leyland: Well, I missed the first few hours JJ, but from then on we’ve been pretty good mates, so go easy on me or I’ll be having words with your Mama (laughs).

JS: Oh, anything but that, please (laughs). An up-and-down start to the year by your boys, and May has been a tough month up to now – what are your thoughts on the team’s performance?

JL: Yeah there are a few key areas we just haven’t been up to scratch in and they’re not hard to find. Our bullpen has had a real tough time of it, starters have been inconsistent, bottom third of the lineup too quiet. We know where we have to be better, but as always it’s easier said than done. We just have to keep working away and trust in our guys to come around.

JS: That said, there have also been some excellent signs for your group. Seager has been giving pitchers fits so far, Suzuki and Boyer were like two lightning bolts in April, DiMaggio looks like an elite-level player, same with Mize. Whitey Ford has been fantastic. That must give you plenty of encouragement despite the current standings.

JL: Oh, undoubtedly. Plus there’s the younger guys like Jackson and Morgan who we feel will end up being superstars in this league, so we’re confident we have the right bunch of ballplayers to bring sustained success to the club. If we have to ride out a few early bumps like we are at the moment, then so be it. As long as we’re always heading in the right direction.

JS: You come into this series off a pretty ugly loss to the Firebirds last night, how’s the mood in the group?

JL: It’s probably the game before that hurts more. We’d got home in a tight one on Thursday and were feeling pretty good about things, but then one ill-timed error on Friday cost us 5 unearned runs and we took a tough beat. I think last night was more a reflection of that disappointment. We just hung our heads and didn’t show up to play. That’s the sort of thing that happens with young ballplayers, and I made sure to point out to them after the game that this isn’t how we want to be going about things. So I’m looking for a much improved showing tonight and in the rest of this series.

JS: Tonight’s starter Jim Perry has been pretty good for you so far, what are you looking for from him tonight?

JL: Yeah, we really like what we saw from Jimbo against the Grays and a couple starts before that at Carolina was maybe his best performance of all. But then in-between those two he got shelled and was gone by the third. So, once again, it’s all about working towards consistency in your play. The bad loss against Virginia he was overthrowing big-time, trying to fan every batter he faced. That was a big lesson learned for him. He just doesn’t have the stuff to pitch like that. I doubt he’ll make the same mistake again. He’s finding out what works for him out on the mound and just needs to stick with his strengths. And we need him to go as deep as he can because of our problems in the pen right now, so he must be as economical with his pitching as he can to give that every chance of happening.

JS: And just before I let you go, I have to ask about Ichiro. Have you seen anything like this media coverage from his homeland?

JL: Nothing remotely like it. I don’t know how he handles it, let alone always with a smile on his face like he does. I think it speaks volumes for him as a person and Japanese culture on the whole that all the madness is conducted in such an orderly and polite manner, with everyone involved so respectful of one another. We should take a leaf from their book in this country. And then he comes out and does what he has on the field. It’s mind-blowing, utterly mind-blowing.

JS: A great story indeed and can't wait to see how it plays out from here. OK, thank you so much for your time and best of luck tonight and for the season ahead. Guess I’ll see you next week for Pop’s birthday.

JL: That you will my love, wouldn’t miss it for the world. I know what’s good for me (laughs).

JS: Glad to hear it, back to you Nik.

Great stuff Juliana, and thanks to Uncle Jim as well (laughs). First pitch is coming up after this break.

TOP 1ST
A nightmare start for the home team as Cabrera singles and then Bellinger continues his assault on the grandstands with a two-out 2-run homer, his 7th of the season. Perry also allows a HBP and a walk, but gets Walters to groundout to end the threat.
Kansas City 2, New Orleans 0

BOTTOM 1ST
A bit of a wobbler for Alexander as well, as he allows three baserunners but manages to escape the inning unscathed.

TOP 2ND
A cleaner inning for Perry as he retires them in order.

BOTTOM 2ND
Seager is another player in roaring form so far this season, and he gets the Pirates on the board with a solo bomb, number 8 of the year for the New Orleans shortstop.
Kansas City 2, New Orleans 1

TOP 3RD
Perry gives up a leadoff hit to Cabrera but then gets the dangerous McCovey to roll into a DP and the Blues don’t add to their total.

BOTTOM 3RD
A 1-2-3 inning for Johnson.

TOP 4TH
Pirates first-baseman Johnny Mize drops a throw for an error and Flick doubles to put two in scoring position for the Blues with none out. Perry gets Walters to groundout sharply to third for the first out, fans Phillips for the second, and induces a popout from Gehrig to nullify the threat. But these long innings will have Pirates’ chief Jim Leyland concerned about bringing their iffy relief corps into the game ahead of time.

BOTTOM 4TH
Just a two-out single by Posey that leads nowhere.

TOP 5TH
Cabrera gets on base for the third time via a one-out walk and another error, this time by Seager with two out, once again puts them in a dangerous situation. But Perry strikes out Freehan to end the inning.

BOTTOM 5TH
Suzuki and Boyer have been fantastic for the Pirates at the top of the order, and they strike again here as Suzuki gats on with an infield hit and then scores all the way from first on a Boyer double to tie it at 2. The Pirates then take the lead for the first time on another two-base hit by Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio, taking his RBI total to 37, and double that lead on a two-out RBI single by Santo. Seager singles to keep the inning going, and Alexander is lucky to escape further damage when Posey just misses one, flying out to Bellinger at the warning track.
New Orleans 4, Kansas City 2

TOP 6TH
A walk to Walters, but then Perry gets Phillips to GIDP to end the inning.

BOTTOM 6TH
Nothing doing for the Bucs.

TOP 7TH
Seager’s second miscue of the game – and New Orleans’ third – puts Gehrig at second with none out and Leyland is forced to make that pitching change, bringing in Mullane to face the top of the Blues order. Dahlen grounds out, advancing Gehrig to third, and Cabrera continues his excellent game with an RBI single. A questionable steal call clears the bases when Posey guns down Cabrera at second and, despite a walk to McCovey, the Pirates maintain the lead. Still plenty of baseball left in this one, folks.
New Orleans 4, Kansas City 3

BOTTOM 7TH
Three up, three down.

TOP 8TH
One hit but that’s it for KC, now down to their last three outs.

BOTTOM 8TH
Santo and Seager single and then the runners both advance on a cheeky double steal that sees Posey make the first out with a whiff. Not sure about Leyland’s decision not to pinch for the light-hitting Harrah, but he strikes out. As does Abreu to end the rally fruitlessly.

TOP 9TH
After a one-out hit by Dahlen, Leyland brings in Smoky Joe Wood to try and get them the two outs they need for the win. And he obliges in one fell swoop, as Cabrera grounds into a game-ending double play.

BOTTOM 9TH
x

New Orleans 4, Kansas City 3 (final).

WP: Jim Perry (6-3)
LP: Pete Alexander (4-4)
SV: Smoky Joe Wood (1)
POTG: Jim Perry 6 IP / 4 H / 2 ER / 3 K.

The Pirates get the much-needed win but can consider themselves very fortunate to have done so, as they tried all they could to throw it away. Perry was solid again and the home side’s bullpen got the job done, albeit by the skin of their teeth. KC tried hard but in the end just lacked the one or two big hits they were after in those closing innings.

Another really tight contest for our Game of the Week, and I can’t wait until next week as we travel to Harbor Street Yards for what promises to be a huge clash between the New York Gothams and their North Division archrivals the Boston Beacons. Hope you’ll join us then. Thanks for tuning in, enjoy the rest of your evening.
