This makes Rivers our 5th outfielder and now expendable, so I will look to sign him and then package him with a pitcher for an upgrade in the rotation or just get a pitching prospect for him

I packaged Rivers with 28-year old SP Tom Bradley to the Phillies for 1971 ROY Burt Hooton. Hooton has averaged 15 wins with a 3.26 ERA and a 5.2 WAR in Philadelphia while Bradley averaged 12 wins with a 3.60 ERA and 3.0 WAR over the same time.
Hooten is signed for 3 years/$231,000 per and has never been on the injured list. I think this will be the end of the major moves, but I haven't even reached the draft yet

I was glad that the Tigers drafted Lou Whitaker last year, but then he ended up not signing, so they had a compensatory pick. Here was the top 10
1)Brewers-Rickey Henderson 2)Pirates-Alan Trammell 3)Tigers-Wade Boggs (Compensatory) 4)Braves-Lou Whitaker 5)Rangers-Mike Scott 6)Padres-Billy Sample 7)White Sox-Pat Tabler 8)Tigers-Steve Kemp 9)Expos-Jay Howell 10)Reds-Pascual Perez I drafted a SS in the first round who never got above AAA IRL, Jesus Alfaro. "a good-good human being and a fine gentleman" http://www.greatest21days.com/2019/0...popular-3.html I then drafted a CF who never got above AA in the 2nd round, Vernon "Al" Armstead. Then in the 3rd I drafted Victor Cruz, a pitcher who had a few dozen wins and saves in the late 70 and early 80's.

In a minor deal, I picked up oft-injured Joaquin Andujar for 1b prospect Stanley Jackson. Jackson's OBP has been over .410 every year, including 2 years at AAA, but it's time to promote Eddie Murray to AAA, so, I take a risk on someone who has been on the DL 4 times in 5 years, but was a top 40 prospect before the injuries hit.

I just noticed that 39-year old Harmon Killibrew is only 70 HR's behind Babe Ruth and he just hit 37 last year. Mays retired at 636 and Aaron at 635. 40-year old Frank Robinson is still active at 612.

Heading into 1976, I really like how flexible I can be with my lineup.
Gary Matthews is an above average OF at every position, Reggie Smith is above average at CF and RF, Gregory Foreman is above average at LF and CF and Jim Wynn is above average at RF. I will rotate these 4 at DH to try to keep them all as fresh as possible. Gary Matthews Darrell Evans Reggie Smith Jim Wynn Gregory Foreman Jim Fregosi Roy Howell Bob Allietta Dave Cash Along with some vets, Matthews is 25, ROY Gregory Foreman is 24, Bob Allietta is 23 and Roy Howell just 22. We don't need rookies Howell and Allietta to win the ROY like Foreman did last year, but if they are legit bats, we could have a fun offense. We have the 14th rated rotation which sounds about right to me: George Dixon 13-3 3.36 ERA 29 yrs old Larry Gura 13-10 3.67 ERA 28 yrs old Burt Hooton 15-15 3.26 ERA 26 yrs old Gerald Lewis 17-8 3.54 ERA 27 yrs old William Sheets 14-9 3.28 ERA 26 yrs old Dean Chance 5-2 15 saves 2.6 ERA John Hiller 2-3 13 saves 2.08 ERA Jim Burton 11-9 3.06 ERA (As starter for Cubs) Lots of player movement due to pending free agency, I have no idea how things are going to shake out. I did sign Dave Cash to a 3 year extension averaging $130,000 a year, a bargain to me. Now I need to work on Evans/Wynn/Smith

I can get Johnny Bench for Allietta and Dixon. He's not IRL Johnny Bench, but he's still just 28, a 5-time All-Star and 6-time Gold Glove. He's averaged 18 HR's and about 80 RBI's a year.
But like Smith, Evans and Wynn, Bench will be a UFA after this year and while I will technically save money this year (and gain a ton of money due to ticket sales and his popularity), it's going to cost a boat load next year to sign all 4 of those. I need to ruminate.

I am not going to do it. Bench is still an All-Star, but his OPS+ has gone from 120, to 105, to 98 last season and just 75 so far in the 1st 2 weeks this season.
Allietta is a 55 catcher quality that could grow to 60, which is where Bench is now.

A few signings around the league, setting the bar for my pending UFA's
Dave Winfield-24 years old-8 yrs-$5,206,000-Cleveland-buying years of security Tom Seaver-31 years old-5 yrs-$3,550,000-Mets signed him cheap I have gotten off to a slow start, 7-10, but pending UFA Reggie Smith has been amazing. I need to get him signed before he puts up amazing numbers and I have to fork out more. He wanted 5 yrs at almost $900,000 a year. I came back with $800,800 a year over 5 years. And my prize prospect Eddie Murray tore his achilles and is out for the year. Back injury last year, now this at age 20.

24-27 as June begins. Once again, I am last in defense, 20% more errors than any other team. Even my + rated outfielders have 4-5 errors already. Oh well.
Team ERA is 5th and I have given up the most runs thanks to the leaky defense. ROY Gregory Foreman is .190/.290/.340. Not what we need.

The Tigers offered 34-year old veteran Bill Freehan for our co-#1 catcher 26 year old Francisco Marquez. Marquez has been good for us, he came up 5 years ago and has averaged over 1.5 WAR, but Jim Allietta will be the future #1 and in the meantime, Freehan is a 70 (I use 20-80 ratings) at handling a staff and Marquez is just a 45. I need help with the pitching and he also adds pop, so I threw in a few middling prospects and it's a deal

16-10 in June brings us up to 40-37 and 2 1/2 behind the Royals. Freehan has been great, we've thrown 3 shutouts in the 4 games since we traded for him. Guess we needed that upgrade in a catcher.

46-42 at the All-Star break and 2 back. I think Freehan is going to be a game changer to get us over the hump and into first, our pitching has gotten so much better since his arrival.
Around the league, here are the players really playing well: Carew .378//435/.505 Reggie 19 HR 59 RBI .314 Mike Hargrove .352/.444/.537 11 HR Bobby Bonds .287/.345/.490 14 HR Sixto Lexcano .294/.377/.477 10 HR 22 SB Dick Allen .332/.405/.490 9 HR

My bullpen has become a little lefty heavy so we dealt 33 year old John Hiller for 28 year old Tom Griffin. Hiller has struggled this year with a 4.83 ERA and Griffin has been solid, is 40% cheaper and 5 years younger.

A 19-8 July has launched us 2 games up of the A's and 6 clear of the Royals. We've won 8 in a row and 12 of the last 13. We raked all month with 6 of our 9 regulars hitting over .300. Reggie Smith is inching his way up the league leader lists, he's at .319/.402/.509 with 16 HR and 66 RBI.
Last years ROY Gregory Foreman has struggled to the point of being sent down to try to recover things, but he's only .191/.290/.269 and is our 5th OF. But this year, 3B Roy Howell may let us keep that trophy in our trophy case. Robin Yount was leading in most of the major categories, but he's been out a few week and Howell had a great July going .304/.381/.424 with 3 HR and 17 RBI. Roy Howell now leads rookies with 9 home runs, 50 RBI and a .289 average. We have the best bullpen in the AL and I felt comfortable enough with our squad that I stood pat after the deal to get Griffin. But the A's traded two meh prospects for Nolan Ryan. Not thrilled with that at all.

We officially have a rivalry with 2nd place Oakland.
In game 1 of a 4 game set in Oakland, Gregory Foreman hit a tie-breaking HR in the 8th. On the next pitch Dave Cash was hit by a pitch and the benches emptied. Cash got 3 games and Rodriguez got 6. In game 2, Rob Andrews hit a lead off HR off George Dixon and I thought....well.....sure...so I hit Bill Russell with the next pitch and another bench clearing brawl ensued.

After a rough 13-15 August, we hit September with a 1/2 game lead over the A's. 29 games left, all against division teams. Our next three are against the A's and our last three are against the A's. The A's lost Nolan Ryan for a month, and that is a huge positive for me because he dominated us in the 1 game he started against us.
We are 100% healthy going into the stretch drive and Reggie Smith has a shot at MVP and Roy Howell the ROY. More importantly, we have to beat the A's. When the year started I was set to let our captain, 34-year old SS Jim Fregosi, walk into free agency. His range is going and struggled a bit at the plate last year. But this year he is .294/.364/.391 leading all AL SS in BA, RBI and OPS. He wanted 3 years and I tried for months to get him to sign for 2 years with an club option......then 2 years with a player option.....but he was the most stubborn signing I've ever had. I consider it a win that I got him down from $340,000 a year down to $320,000 and under $1,000,000 in total value over 3 years. I have no decent SS prospects and there are no UFA's next year even close to him. So I bit the bullet and opened the wallet
