So far Old Hoss Radbourn is 5-0 0.60 for the Providence Grays and Tim Keefe Is 6-0 1.17 for the New York Metropolitans.
I don't think Keefe will be able to win 59 since he only started 58 games. However, if a starting pitcher is injured and the
game slects Keefe to pitch he could still win 59 games. Old Hoss has a good chance since this sim since he has 68 more starts
to go and only needs 55 wins.

Radbourn is 11-1 1.17
Noticed that at times teams were scheduled to play 2 different teams on the same day. Thought the schedule was wrong but retrosheet showed it was correct. Not sure why.

1884 latest standings.
Radbourn is 20-4 1.56 with 48 more scheduled starts to go.
Looks like he should break the record but when you think about it, he can only lose 8 more games and then he may not get a decision.
Plus the game may insist on resting him or injury.
So the record is not a gimme.
The Cy Young award may be his.

Latest 1884 standings
1884 and 1890 are probably the longest seasons to get through.

Radbourn is 25-9 2.12.
Not looking good to get 59 wins.
I think he has to go 34-4 the rest of the way.
This is the fun of strict historical play.
In a more fictional historical hybrid he might get more starts.
By going by the actual starts he is limited more closer to the starts he actually had.
I wish there was a mistake or reason i could replay the month of July as Radbourn went 7-6
But it is what it is. I don't replay for player stats.
Only for missed transactions or an 16 error game.
Ive only see one 16 error game since the early 1870s.
I will probably cancel that house rule in 1900 but
in future sims i may cancel it earlier.
If i didn't use it i would end up with a few 67-47 type scores for early 1870s.
Thats just too much scoring for my taste.

Old Hoss Radbourn is 27-10 with 35 more starts.
If he loses 3 games he can only tie 59 wins unless the ai
gives him some more starts. I don't see that happening.
If anything it would probably rest him on one of his starts.
I just put the starter and sim the game. If the ai changes the pitcher
then thats the way it goes.
Gonna take a miracle for Radbourn to get 60 wins.
Al Spalding is still the season and career leader in wins.
51 and 223.
Only pitched 7 years.
Almost 1885 and he still holds the record.
However he won't hold it much longer.
About 7 pitchers have 178 wins or more.
Bobby Mathews has the highest at 203.
He has also lost 252 and has 1 Cy Young award compared to 6 for Spalding

Latest standings.
I don't see Cleveland staying at the top.
Their best pitcher Jim McCormick was released after his last scheduled start.
Where did Chicago come from?
I thought their dynasty was pretty much over and they would be middle of the pack for awhile.
Radbourn is 29-11 2.02

Both league races are starting to clear up.
AA New York plays Philadelphia one more time and Columbus a few more times.
NL Providence plays Chicago 4 more times but i think its a little too much for Chicago to make up.
Chicago has hit a record 107 home runs so far.
Gee i wonder how that could happened.
Couldn't be anything to do with their ballpark.
Abner Dalrymple has hit 28.
Ed Morris of Columbus has been outstanding with a 32-13 1.40 record.
OLd Hoss is 43-15 1.99.
Old Hoss won't be breaking the season record for pitching wins in this sim.
He has 10 more schedule starts and even if he pitches all of Providence's games,
i think the best he can get is 58 wins.

The American Association race is coming down to the wire.
Chicago is making a run at Providence. I didn't think they could do it.
Sweeping Providence in a 4 game series helped.
Three of the games were won by one run.
I think Radbourn not starting some games really hurt.
I dont change a scheduled starter.
However i found out a little late that if i used a 1 man rotation the ai wouldn't change the starter as much.
Radbourn missed 6 starts in which the ai changed the starter.
Still he wouldn't have broken the record.
Charlie Biffinton should break the single season strikeout record.
Record is 426 by Radbourn and Buffinton has 415 with 2 starts left.
His record is 28-31.
Hoping to wrap up the season tommorrow depending on my schedule.
Then sim the playofss wed.

Noticed that at times teams were scheduled to play 2 different teams on the same day. Thought the schedule was wrong but retrosheet showed it was correct. Not sure why.
That happened occasionally in the 19th century. For instance, on May 30, 1884 (Decoration Day), Providence played at home against New York in the morning and Philadelphia in the afternoon. At the same time, Boston played Philly in the morning and New York in the afternoon. So the Giants and Phillies might have waved to each other as their trains passed while going between the two cities.

I think the Providence-Boston four-cornered double-header only happened in 1884. It was more common to see teams shuttling between Brooklyn and Manhattan. And I believe once there was even a split double-header that saw a team travel between Philadelphia and New York. But it was a gimmick that didn't really catch on (I'm sure the players hated it). But you'd still see that sort of thing in the minors for a few more decades into the 20th century.

I kinda thought something like that but i didn't look into the travel part.
Wonder what it was like to head to another game on one of those trains.
How comfortable would that be?
Of course its not like they were traveling to California.
But if your sore and on a train in the hot summer with no air condition.

Chicago wins the National League pennant!
Providence had a chance to take the pennant.
They were tied with Chicago and due to as played schedules they
had 1 game left while Chicago had none.
Providence blew it in the 9th inning.
Kinda fitting with Radbourn's season performance.
Yet any other year Radbourn's stats would look great.

AA New York Metropolitans started 13-0 but i guess Philadelphia was a bit more consistent.

Next time i might leave injuries off but i wanted to see if i ran into any
incomplete rosters due to injuries. So far i dont recall any incomplete rosters.

Quakers Sneak By Grays, 6-5
Starting pitcher Shadow Pyle pitched well enough to help the Philadelphia Quakers beat the Providence Grays, 6-5. The Quakers now own a record of 57-56.
Jack Clements was the walk-off hero for Philadelphia. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Quakers right fielder hit a dramatic run-scoring double to send the teams home.
"Honestly, I'm not frustrated," said Providence manager Frank Bancroft. "The effort was great."
