George "Wildcat" Spendolini - MW
Here he is, Mr. George "Wildcat" Spendolini - MW
1937-1939 PRO Fight: W7(KO 2) / L3(KO 1) / D2 From included newspaper summaries.. The BoxRec ID will take you to KO Spendolini as he is currently listed there. I won't copy an paste the somewhat lengthly bio of newspaper and web information. You can of course look at that on his file. One thing I struggled a bit with when reviewing the newspaper articles was telling for sure what are amateur fights and what became "professional" fights. I was struggling with that with Jumbo also and with Hub Parks. But what I've accumulated is what I decided on as pro fights. Did find a photo of Spendolini which was great. Rocco |

Working on Al Ryll and Joe Piasta
Think I mentioned I started looking through my Jan 1938 Ring Magazine to start looking at posted HW/LHW fighters. Not necessarily all of them but, the ranked guys as this Thread intended to follow and if by chance I have a file for someone done in the past by someone on this site. These two are what I'm working on now. Ryll was in my data base done by TC Parade the title is marked. Does anyone know who that was? I'm thinking Bear but maybe not? I am looking at the rating some but if I work on a rerating, I keep the original and want to give the credit in the Bio who did that.
Anyway working on these two HW's. Piasta will be fresh new, at least for me! Running into some more confusing naming conventions with him! Rocco |

Great stuff as always Rocco! Yes, I'm pretty sure Ryll was done by Bear back then.

Al Ryll redo
Here is a update of the Al Ryll rating I had done we think by Bear originally. Added a good amount of new information after researching him through the papers. I didn't write up summaries on all his fights, but I did go through them in the papers just to see what tidbits I might find about him.
Al Ryll - HW Career Record: W18(KO 12) / L4(KO 2) / D0 Unknown information has been left blank. Original Rating "TC Parade". (Bear) Full name, Alfred R. "Lefty" Ryll. Manager Lou Brown Last edited by Rocco Del Sesto; 03-09-2026 at 09:42 AM. |

Researching Joe Piasta or Piesta
Well, going through what I have the past few short weeks and times before I can see why it is so difficult researching these records for these fights. It can be and is a tedious process.
So finding Joe Piasta, Al Ryll's first opponent, also spelled Joe Piesta in a good number of newpaper articles!! In a way part of the fun of it like solving a 5000 piece puzzle!! Rocco |

Researching Joe Piasta or Piesta
Example of name difference.
I like finding these fight announcements in these old papers! Do they even do this anymore? Probably not with most everything on the internet and many print papers gone out of existence. |

Researching Joe Piasta or Piesta
Searching fight records for Joe Piasta, finding a number of them in 1940 at least him named as Joe Piesta including the two fights with Armand Roy listed in BoxRec. What I wanted to mention is I found a newspaper article, Wed Jul 31, 1940, Fitchburg Sentinel, MA with a preview of the first fight on Aug 1st. In that article it mentions that Roy fought under the name Joe Plouffe in the "Granite" state. Believe that is New Hampshire.
I see BoxRec's listing for Armand Roy, ID# 104174 lists fights from 1940 to 1946 and his residence as Manchester, N.H. There is also in BoxRec a listing for a Joe Plouffe, ID# 755128, 5 fights all in 1939 for this heavyweight fighter with residence shown as Waterbury, Conn. The articles found form Fitchburg Sentinel paper on the fights with Joe Piesta/Piasta reference Roy as being from Fitchburg? I got to wonder if Roy and Plouffe in BoxRec are the same fighter. Will do some more looking at that as now I'm intrigued to find out! Rocco |

I think that confirms it. They are the same guy. Maybe Cap could update Spendolini and Ryll on Boxrec? |

Is there a place on BoxRec that people signed in can submit information for them to make changes, additions, etc.? The bio info I write up in TB I could just submit a txt of it to them? Is there an organization of people who make these updates? Apparently Cap is part of that group?

To update a bunch of records you need in order, the exact date, the location with venue, the round the fight ended and the scheduled number of rounds, the names of the two combatants. Even then this could be a lot of work.

Joe Piasta, Al Ryll's debut opponent
So here is Joe Piasta. when you look at the notes I've included you see his name gets spelled different ways in the newspapers so it made it difficult finding fight records for him. But, after a bunch of searching and using different names I did not come up with any other fights noted for him that BoxRec did not already list. So that was nice to see.
Interestingly with all the articles I went through, never found a photo of Piasta. Rocco |

Resuming work on Hub Parker
Stream lining these posts removing all the bio info I end up putting in the fighters file. shorten the length of his thread that I felt was getting TO LONG for anyone to delve through!
