2005-06 Trans-Tasman Classic: Game Five
![]() ![]() ![]() Just like in game one, Randolph Vankrimpen proves how good he is conceding only 3 hits and no walks over 7 innings to propel his side towards the win. It wasn't easy though, Yin-Fat Zhen also pitched a good game for the Sting but not quite enough, a Rex Qualtrough double in the 3rd proving too much to overcome for the Sting. The Steamrollers are now up 3-2 and the series moves back to Tauranga for the final two games. |

2005-06 Trans-Tasman Classic: Game Six
![]() ![]() ![]() Melbourne Pitcher Randolph Owbridge went down hard after only 6 pitches with a sprained ankle. The brings up the bullpen to take over the game as the Sting are forced to use 7 pitchers over the game to share the load. They've got one of the best bullpens in baseball and they proved it here with Vaughan Macquade the only one to concede any earned runs. The game went into the 9th all tied up at 2-all. Domenic Dethridge came up to the plate with runners in the corners. The very first pitch he gets from rookie Domenic Brigatti is hit into the stands. The Melbourne Sting force a game seven in dramatic fashion. One game to go. It's all on this. |

2005-06 Trans-Tasman Classic: Game Seven
Well, here we go folks. 168 games in the regular season, a best-of-5 series,a best-of-7 series and 6 games in the Trans Tasman Classic and it all comes down to one game. The first ever Game 7 in the Trans Tasman Classic. Melbournities and the citizens of the Bay of Plenty woke up nervously on this Saturday morning and waited. At the game in Baypark Stadium in Tauranga, a cover band performed Tom Petty's I Won't Back Down to a raucous crowd. But it was the Sting who took the song to heart. Zachariah Dunshea led off and was out with a fly ball but Seb Gillorn came up and blasted a solo home run into the crowd for a 1-0 lead. Into the 4th innings and Melbourne catcher Zachariah Layland was on first when Domenic Dethridge came up to the plate, now Layland is not known for his speed but when Dethridge hit a pitch for a double, Layland ran as hard as he had ever ran to get home and he narrowly made it for a 2-0 lead. The Steamrollers had a chance to put some runs in the bottom of the 4th but with 2 outs and bases loaded, Vaughan Belgrove -- swiped from the minor leagues and with an OPS+ of 2 in the majors -- could do nothing but strike out swinging. It wasn't until the bottom of the 6th that the Steamrollers got on the board, Rhys Macdonald was on 1st and Willem Limeburner sent the ball into the crowds with the very first pitch he got. That tied the game up at 2-all. The relievers and closers did their job and kept hits down in the final innings of the game and took the game to extra innings. Bay of Plenty tossed the ball to rookie Domenic Brigatti and he started off great. In 3 pitches he had 2 outs but then it started to unravel. Zachariah Dunshea got a single, Seb Gillorn, got a single, and Koi-Sho Chu came to the plate with runners on 1st and 2nd. Melbourne's rookie let a ball go past before hitting a ball over the heads of the infield. Zachariah Dunshea got to third, saw his chance, and made the mad dash home. SAFE! The Sting have the lead! The score is 3-2, the game goes to the bottom of the 10th. The first two hitters are retired promptly but Rhys Macdonald puts up some resistance with a double but he's left stranded as the final Steamroller hitter hits straight to a Sting fielder. THE MELBOURNE STING HAVE WON THE TRANS-TASMAN CLASSIC! The first team to go back-to-back! ![]() ![]() ![]() |
