Walkers news: Mid-season note from the owner
Frick him
We are in the race after a bad start. Stolen bases really don't matter. We are 12th in payroll, and if we shed the $17 million, he wants we'd be a bottom dweller. If I don't make the playoffs, fire me. |

Walkers news: June 30 -- Des Moines 6, St. Louis 5
Record: 44-39, 2nd, 4 GB Quad City
Des Moines needed a little over an inning to pound St. Louis starting pitcher Ricky Cisneros for six runs, and the Harvesters held on for a 6-5 win at Green Canyon Park. The victory gave Des Moines victories in the final two games of their three-game series. Cisneros was not good. David Lewis hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. In the second, he allowed two singles and a double to open the inning before exiting. Andrew Foley's double scored a run to make it 4-2, Yeison Santos took over, and threw a wild pitch which allowed Fernando Tatis Jr. to score and make it 5-2. Jackson Miller later singled as the gap grew to 6-2. The River Walkers did fight their way back into the game. Jose Ramirez hit a solo homer in the sixth to make it 6-3. Back-to-back solo shots from Jose Segura and Jared Thomas in the eighth, both off Jeremy Bouchard, made it 6-5. In the ninth, the Walkers got a pair of two-out walks from Harvesters closer Omar Benitez. But Benitez struck out Jose Segura to end it, and earn his 16th save. Des Moines starter Albert Hernandez (12-3) wasn't great, but good enough to earn his 12th win. He allowed two runs on four hits over five innings. Jared Jones, John Nippard, Bouchard and Benitez all pitched an inning apiece to cover the rest of the contest. |

Walkers news: July 1 -- St. Louis 7, Des Moines 6, 11 innings
Record: 45-39, 2nd, 3 GB Quad City
Jose Ramirez hit a walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to give St. Louis a 7-6 win over Des Moines at Busch Stadium (1997). A wild game, the River Walkers had tied the game at 5-5 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on a pinch-hit single by Alek Thomas. In the 10th, they had evened it at 6-6 on a lead-off homer from Jean Seguara. They finally won it an inning later, when Ramirez hit his 15th homer of the season on a 1-2 pitch from Harvesters relief pitcher Jeremy Bouchard. Back-to-back homers from Andrew Foley (a two-run shot) and Rafael Devers off St. Louis starter Izzy San Juan with two outs in the top of the sixth had put Des Moines ahead 5-2. Devers' homer was his second of the game, and gave him 26 for the season. St. Louis sliced that deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth. Steve Rossi with a two-run homer off Des Moines starter Steven Gingery. It then tied it in the ninth against Bouchard. Jared Thomas led off with a double. He was replaced by pinch-runner Joshua Rivera. Bouchard struck out Jean Carmona and Peter Ahn, but Thomas came through with his pinch-hit single to force extra innings. The top of the 10th saw Des Moines go back up against Walkers closer Ernesto Barbosa. Austin Meadows led off with a double. A Glenn Santiago single moved Meadows to third, and he scored on a Fernando Tatis Jr. fly ball. Bouchard came out for the bottom of the 10th, and saw his 2-0 pitch to Segura powered 416 feet over the fence in right-center to assure at least one more inning. San Juan worked six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. Jake Brentz, Cory Tiller and Jose Alvarado all pitched an inning apiece before Barbosa took over in the 10th. |

Walkers news: July 2 -- Des Moines 7, St. Louis 5
Record: 45-40, 2nd, 3 GB Quad City
Powered by a pair of Rafael Devers home runs, Des Moines jumped out to a 7-1 lead, and then held off a late St. Louis rally to defeat the River Walkers 7-5 at Busch Stadium. Devers has now hit five home runs in his last three games against St. Louis. The three-time MVP went deep once in the finale of a three-game series between the teams on June 30 in Des Moines. The two teams then both travelled to St. Louis, and Devers smacked a pair of homers in a 7-6, 11-inning win by the Walkers. In this one, Devers hit a three-run homer off St. Louis starter Trey Benton in the first inning, and a two-run blast also off Benton in the fourth. The Harvesters also got a solo homer from Riley Adams in the fifth, off Travis Krogman, to give them their 7-1 lead. St. Louis roared back with a pair of runs in the seventh -- Thairo Estrada driving in both runs with a double off Jonathan Cooper. -- and two more in the ninth -- Jose Ramirez with an RBI triple off Jeremy Bouchard. Ramirez scored on an Estrada ground -- to get within two runs. Des Moines closer Omar Benitez didn't have any easy time keeping that lead. He allowed a two-out single to Steve Rossi, followed by a Jared Thomas double to put the tying run at second. But Benitez got Joshua Rivera to fly out to end it. For Benitez, it was his 17th save of the season. Harvesters starting pitcher Eric LaFollette (5-5) allowed one run on two hits over five innings. After LaFollette, it was John Nippard, Cooper and Jared Jones for an inning apiece before Bouchard took the mound to start the ninth. |

Walkers news: July 3 -- Des Moines 4, St. Louis 3
Record: 45-41, 2nd (Tied/w. Des Moines), 3 GB Quad City
Des Moines' Wayne McHaney hit a fourth-inning grand slam to wipe out a 2-0 St. Louis lead, and the Harvesters held on for a 4-3 win at Busch Stadium (1997). With the win, Des Moines took the final two games of their three-game series in St. Louis. The Harvesters also took four of six in the long stretch of games between the teams. Jackson Miller got things going for the Harvesters in the fourth, with a one-out single off River Walkers starter Angel Tiburcio. Tiburicio would exit the game after that at-bat with an undisclosed injury. Yeison Santos took over and sandwiched walks to David Lewis and Glenn Santiago around a fly out by John Lehto to load the bases. McHaney then launched his big blow hitting a 1-1 pitch 368 feet over the left-field wall. His third homer of the season. St. Louis would pull to within a run after Peter Ahn homered off Des Moines starter Chris Rybicki. But it would not score again. Rybicki (4-5) pitched the first six innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Kellan Tulio handled the final three for his first save. |

Walkers news: July 4 -- Cleveland 2, St. Louis 0
Record: 45-42, 3rd, 3 GB Quad City
Matt Frisbee tossed five shutout innings and three relievers handled the rest, as Cleveland downed St. Louis 2-0 at Busch Stadium (1997). The game's lone runs came in the top of the fifth inning after Judson Fabian led things off for the Juke Box Heroes with a double off River Walkers starter Kaneo Kawamoto. Frisbee attempted to move Fabian up a base with a bunt, but he was thrown out at third. But Will Holland picked Frisbee up with a single. Mac Horvath then did the big damage with a double to score both runners. On the mound, Frisbee (8-5) scattered four hits over five innings. Yuki Matsui pitched a scoreless sixth, before Bob Granillo did the same in both the seventh and eighth. Adam Wegner, who started his career in the St. Louis organization, struck out the side in the ninth for his 20th save. |

Walkers news: July 5 -- Cleveland 2, St. Louis 1, 11 innings
Record: 45-43, 4th, 4 GB Quad City
Mac Horvath connected on a two-out RBI single in the top of the 11th inning to help lift Cleveland to a 2-1 win over St. Louis at Busch Stadium (1997). River Walkers reliever David Amador retired the first two Juke Box Heroes batters in the top of the 11th, but Will Holland got to him for a double. Horvath followed with a single which got past second baseman Peter Ahn, and Holland crossed the plate with what was the winning run. A homer from Joe Silverstein in the top of the fourth inning off St. Louis starter Ricky Cisneros gave Cleveland a 1-0 lead. The Walkers didn't tie it until the seventh, when Jean Carmona homered off Cleveland reliever Bob Granillo. Heroes starting pitcher Mason Montgomery allowed just two hits over five innings. He struck out seven and walked one. Five relievers followed Montgomery to the mound -- Yuki Matsui (1.0 IP), Granillo (1.0), Juan Munoz (1.0), Adam Wenger (2.0) and German Baca (1.0) -- with Wenger (5-2) earning the win. Baca collected his first save. |

Walkers news: July 6 -- Cleveland 6, St. Louis 3, 12 innings
Record: 45-44, 4th, 5 GB Quad City
Adrian Hernandez hit a two-run double to highlight a three-run top of the 12th inning for Cleveland, as the Juke Box Heroes downed St. Louis 6-3 at Busch Stadium (1997). Former River Walker farmhand Edgar Bustillos got things going for the Heroes with a one-out single off St. Louis reliever Trey Benton. Fernando Jimenez followed with another single, and Hernandez then connected for his double as Cleveland went up 5-3. Hernandez later scored on a Ramon Montes single, as St. Louis' beaten-up bullpen had nobody available to replace Benton. A solo homer from Jose Ramirez off Cleveland starting pitcher Stiward Aquino put the River Walkers ahead 3-1 after six innings. But Will Holland tied it in the top of the seventh, hitting a two-run homer off Walkers starter Izzy San Juan. Heroes starting pitcher Stiward Aquino handled the first 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Six relievers took the mound after his exit. German Baca finished the sixth inning. Freddy Tarnok and Juan Munoz both pitched two scoreless innings. Bob Granillo worked a scoreless top of the 11th. Granillo (3-2) would earn the win. Yuki Matsui got the first two outs of the 12th. Adam Wenger got the third, which was enough to earn him his 21st save. |
