Me too! Let's hope the Gothams come ready to play, they've been a major disappointment so far.

Game of the Week – Sunday, 21st May 1961
New York Gothams (19-27) @ Boston Beacons (24-22)
Harbor Street Yards – Boston, MA; 7.05 pm BOST: Felix Hernandez (3-1, 2.77) NYOR: Jacob deGrom (4-2, 2.86) Good evening folks, and welcome to another Game of the Week – I’m your host, Nik Hill. We’re coming to you live from Harbor Street yards in Admirals Hill, north across the Mystic River from Boston and, boy, tonight’s game has got just about everything you could hope for from a baseball contest. Fierce divisional rivals who don’t much seem to like each other at all, two of the hottest pitchers in the league, and a superb array of offensive talent all on show in the one place. This evening, the home fans will be hoping their beloved Beacons can repeat their excellent performance from last night when they knocked off the visiting New York Gothams by a score of 7 to 1 behind a fantastic complete game by Ned Garver. They’ll have their work cut out for them, though, as Jacob deGrom takes the mound for New York with the aim of improving upon his 4-2 record, and they’ll need to be much better tonight than they were when they last faced the gun righty at the end of last month. On that occasion, he shut them out on eight hits over 7 innings en route to a comfortable 6-0 win for the Gothams and they didn’t seem to have any answers against him at all. That said, the Gothams – who, it is fair to say, have been one of the league’s biggest underperformers to this point – have a huge task facing them as well, with the mighty King Felix Hernandez casting his commanding presence from the hill. Felix has been fantastic so far, going 3-1 with a 2.77 ERA, and is coming off an excellent 5-hit complete game win over the tough Colonials. He has been almost unhittable at times, and his 76 strikeouts are just two off the lead in the entire PBL. Neither pitcher, however, will get things all their own way tonight--not with the hitters they’ll be facing. Guys like Judge, Bagwell and Winfield for the visitors and the tricky threesome at the heart of the home side’s lineup: Fred Clarke, Arky Vaughn and Ronald Acuna, as well as the young man waiting patiently down on the field with our own Juliana Scott. Juliana, who’ve you got for us tonight? Juliana Scott: Hi Nik, it’s very noisy down here with the home fans having a few things to say to a couple of the Gothams’ players, so I hope you can hear me OK. I’m here with one of the rising stars for the Beacons Ty Cobb. Ty, thanks for joining us. Ty Cobb: My pleasure, ma’am. JS: It’s not just the fans who seem to have taken a bit of a dislike to the boys from the Big Apple, Ty. You had a little to-do with them yourself last month didn’t you? A quick unscheduled mound visit to exchange a few key insights with Walter Johnson about his pitching technique that he didn’t seem to take too kindly to. TC: Oh no, Juliana, Train and I are great mates – been playing against each other on the way up a few years now. I just hadn’t seen him for a while and was just checking to make sure his ma was well and he’d bought her something nice for Mother’s Day (laughs). JS: (Laughing) Well he must have forgotten to get her a present if his response was anything to go by. TC: Yes, he was very upset that he hadn’t bought her the pearls he’d promised if he ever made the bigs and lashed out at the nearest person, which unfortunately just happened to be me (laughs). JS: Fair enough, let’s leave it at that. You’re from Georgia, originally, have you found it difficult to settle in to a new city? TC: Don’t get me wrong, I love Georgia to bits and miss it like heck sometimes. But I’m a baseball player first and foremost. No kidding, I’d move to the Moon as long as it had a baseball diamond or two set up and ready to play on. JS: The way you play the game, I have no doubt about it. Is that intensity something you’ve always had or has it been a recent development. TC: I’ve always been a bit on the feisty side to be honest, at least on the diamond. I know it’s a double-edged sword, that sometimes it goes against me. But it seems to work for me on the whole, so that’s just how it has to be, I guess. Hopefully I get better at controlling it and using it to my advantage the older I get. I find myself spending a lot of time watching Arky and Fred Clarke. Both of them are just as competitive as me, perhaps even more’n I am. But they channel it better than I’m able to, they rarely lose their cool, only if it’s absolutely necessary. That’s what I’m hoping to be able to learn how to do. Because – and they’d be the first to admit this – I’m a better natural ballplayer than either of them. JS: Let’s turn our attnation to tonight, how do you plan to get on top of deGrom – he’s been tough so far, hasn’t he? TC: Yeah, I guess so. But no pitcher’s unhittable, not like the feller upstairs said, not even our Felix. We just played bad that night. But he’s got good control and a fair arsenal of pitches, I’ll give him that. So you just need to be patient. He’s only human, he’ll make a mistake eventually. That’s when you have to pounce. JS: Well we are really anticipating a great game tonight, Ty. Thanks for talking to us and all the best. TC: Thanks a bunch, been a pleasure. JS: Back to the feller upstairs, Nik – he’s a lively one all right, our Mister Cobb. He sure is Juliana, can’t wait to see how his career plays out. I know the Bostonites think very highly of him, let’s hope he can live up to the hoopla. We’ll be back with all the action after this short commercial break. TOP 1ST A strong start by Hernandez as he sends them down as they came up. BOTTOM 1ST No runs, hits or errors in the home half. TOP 2ND No dramas again for The King. BOTTOM 2ND Fred Clarke gets the game’s first hit and moves to third on another single by Stan Hack, before coming home on a sac fly by our friend Mr Cobb to put the home side in front. Boston 1, New York 0 TOP 3RD A walk and nothing else for the visitors, who are still looking for their first hit. BOTTOM 3RD A two-out rally nets the Beacons a second run as Tinker singles, swipes second and comes home on a Vaughn single – that’s 27 RBI now for the Boston shortstop. Boston 2, New York 0 TOP 4TH A leadoff walk to Bagwell is erased when Mathews rolls into a double play. BOTTOM 4TH A two-out double by Cobb amounts to nothing. TOP 5TH Andruw Jones reaches on a wild pitch but is then caught trying to steal second with a perfect throw by Boston backstop Gary Carter. Hernandez’s no-hitter lives into the 6th. BOTTOM 5TH A single by Tinker with two out keeps the inning alive but Vaughn can only ground out to short. TOP 6TH Another perfect inning by Hernandez. BOTTOM 6TH Nothing doing for the Beacons. TOP 7TH The crowd groans as one when Gothams third-baseman Eddie Mathews breaks up The King’s no-no bid with a one-out single. But he recovers to get them out of the inning without conceding. BOTTOM 7TH After Cobb continues his good game with a leadoff single, New York skipper John McGraw decides to hook his starter, bringing southpaw David Wells in to relieve him. A successful sacrifice by Doerr puts the Georgia Peach in scoring position but Wells gets out of the inning unscathed. TOP 8TH Hernandez, looking as strong as he did in the 1st, sends them down 1-2-3. BOTTOM 8TH Tinker gets his third hit of the game to lead off the inning but Hartnett nails him trying to pilfer second with a pinpoint throw. TOP 9TH Hernandez caps off a superb performance with another easy inning to give the Beacons a shutout win. The big BOTTOM 9TH X Boston 2, New York 0 (final). WP: Felix Hernandez (4-1) LP: Jacob deGrom (4-3) POTG: Felix Hernandez 9 IP / 1 H / 0 ER / 9 K. Well what a sensational performance from Felix Hernandez, as he shuts out New York with a sublime one-hitter. He faced just 29 batters and 67 of his 106 pitches were for strikes. The Gothams bats continue to flounder, registering just 4 flyouts all game while whiffing 9 times and they failed to get a runner past second base, such was Hernandez’s dominance. That brings tonight’s telecast to a close and we’re back here in the Northeast next Sunday for our first look at the Indianapolis Arrows as they play host to the Washington Grays, another side we’ve yet to see live, at Qualys Field. Until then, have a great week.

Game of the Week – Sunday, 28th May 1961
Washington Grays (29-23) @ Indianapolis Arrows (20-32)
Qualys Field – Indianapolis, IN; 3.05 pm INDI: Jim Kaat (3-2, 4.35) WASH: Camilo Pascual (4-3, 3.16) Hi folks, I’m Nik Hill and welcome to today’s Game of the Week—an afternoon game, which makes for a nice change. We’re coming to you live from Qualys Field in Indianapolis to see a clash of two East Division rivals, as the Arrows play host to the Washington Grays. Wildly differing performances so far from these two sides, with the Grays coming out of the blocks quickly to take a commanding lead in their division, while the Arrows have started sluggishly and find themselves in the cellar. That said, their fortunes have had somewhat of a turnaround of late as exemplified by Indi’s big 18-6 win last night. Even then, however, they are 9 games adrift of the Grays and will need to keep those sorts of performances coming if they want to keep pace with the rest of the division. Should be a good one again today, perhaps not as high-scoring as last night with two talented pitchers who’ve both had solid seasons to date on the mound. Jim Kaat, who is 3 and 2 with a 4.35 ERA gets the ball for Indi, and he’s got a great arsenal of pitches to use to keep the Washington bats off their game. He’s up against the 4 and 3 Cuban-born flamethrower Camilo Pascual and, as I said, there’s a good chance runs will be hard to come by. One of the players who’ll be trying to prove that statement wrong is down on the field with our own Juliana Scott. Juliana, this young man is making quite a name for himself already, isn’t he? Juliana Scott: Indeed he is Nik, I’m with Arrows second-baseman Napoleon Lajoie—Napoleon, did I pronounce your last name correctly? Napoleon Lajoie: Perfectly, Juliana, but please call me Nap or Larry, only my mother calls me Napoleon these days. Bit of a mouthful for these baseball types. JS: Very well, Nap. You’re originally from Woonsocket, Rhode Island – I wouldn’t think there are too many other players in this league from the Ocean State are there? NL: Actually, Gabby Hartnett of the Gothams and I grew up just a few streets away from each other, went to the same grade school and used to play pick-up together as boys. JS: Well there you go, a real breeding-ground for future Hall of Famers! NL: Oh my, I think we’re getting well ahead of ourselves there. JS: Certainly if you can reproduce your form so far over the length of your career you’ll give it a good shake. On that topic, you have started very well, hitting a mite under .300 and leading the club with 37 RBI while the team has really struggled. How do you reconcile the difference when this happens? NL: Well, Juliana, I’d be speaking falsely if I denied that individual performance isn’t important to me. It’s my job to do well at a personal level. But let me put it this way: I feel much happier when I’ve gone 0-for-5 and we’ve won that if I’ve gone 5-for-5 and we’ve lost. JS: I understand. A strong win last night and the side has been somewhat better in May than your 9-18 April, do you feel you guys are back on track? NL: It’s no great surprise we find ourselves where we are in the standings. Our offence has been poor overall, especially if you overlook the big wins like last evening, of which there have been a few. Our starters have been doing their job for the most part, but we hitters simply haven’t been giving them enough runs to play with, and the bullpen has had problems defending the few we have given them. Ergo our record so far. Last night was great and lots of fun to boot, but we need to be performing better day-in, day-out if we are to have any chance in this league. JS: You have a few raw players who look like they could turn out to be pretty special types – Gehringer, Betts, Speaker to name a few, Justin Verlander in the pitching ranks looks set to dominate for years to come, must be a pretty exciting club to be at despite this year’s problems. NL: The club has done a great job putting this squad together. I think they were prepared for a few lean years when they did so, in exchange for some really plentiful ones down the track. We know we’ll be a force to be reckoned with a few years hence. In the meantime we’re all just trying to become better ballplayers and do our best for the club, for Sparky, for the fans. JS: Well we wish you all the best for that, I’m sure we’ll be hearing a lot more from you over the next decade or so, and good luck against the Grays today. NL: Thank you mademoiselle, you are most kind. JS: Back to you Nik. Thanks Juliana and yes, I doubt that’s the last we’ve seen or heard from that young man in these telecasts. The players are lining up on the field for the National Anthem and we’ll be right back with all this afternoon’s action. TOP 1ST The Grays start confidently with singles to Rose and Clark, but Betts shows off his much-vaunted defensive prowess with a superb throw to nail Rose at third for the second out and Kaat eventually gets out of the inning without conceding. BOTTOM 1ST Just a hit to Beckley for the home side. TOP 2ND A two-out hit to Zack Wheat is all. BOTTOM 2ND The hosts are the first to put a concerted rally together as Betts singles with one out and Frisch bungles what should have been a DP to end the inning, then Edmonds walks to fill the bags. Goslin crushes a long double to left-center that plates two of the runners and a sac fly by shortstop Ozzie Smith adds a third. Indianapolis 3, Washington 0 TOP 3RD Rose gets his second hit of the game and Clark just misses one to end the inning. BOTTOM 3RD A leadoff single to Beckley leads to nothing as Cochrane rolls into an inning-ending DP. TOP 4TH Kaat gets into all sorts of trouble as he loads the bases with none out and Wheat knocks in two with a single. A passed ball on Cochrane lets the tying run come home and then a two-out RBI double by Frisch puts the visitors ahead. Washington 4, Indianapolis 3 BOTTOM 4TH Washington is lucky to escape a bases-loaded jam and maintain their slim lead. TOP 5TH Kaat is starting to look overmatched as the Grays tag him for 2 on a Wheat triple and Arrows manager Sparky Anderson has seen enough, putting Bob Lemon in for him. The change can’t stop the Grays extending their lead as a Nolan Arenado sac fly brings Wheat in to score. 11 hits to this point for Washington as their big bats impart their influence. Washington 7, Indianapolis 3 BOTTOM 5TH Pascual presses home the advantage with a 1-2-3 inning. TOP 6TH It’s beginning to look like the Grays have a bit of revenge for the previous game on their minds as they go further ahead on an RBI single by Yaz. Washington 8, Indianapolis 3 BOTTOM 6TH Needing to get back into the game, the home side gets a rally going, loading the bases with one out. A single by The Wiz brings one in and another run scores on an errant thrown by Grays 3B Arenado. An infield hit to Beckley brings one more in and ends Pascual’s game, as Washington skipper Dusty Baker puts southpaw Johan Santana in to face Lajoie. But the Woonsocket Wonder singles yet another run in and suddenly the Arrows have made it a one-run ballgame and, with bases loaded and just one out, look likely to change that. Sure enough, Cochrane dumps a dying quail into left and it is all tied up at 8. The Grays can’t buy an out as Betts then singles to give the home side the lead and a Bancroft sac fly puts them further ahead. Finally, Santana gets Edmonds to ground out to end the inning as the Arrows post a crooked number. Indianapolis 10, Washington 8 TOP 7TH Bill Donovan comes into the game for the Arrows and starts confidently enough with two strikeouts. A two-out single by Frankie Frisch seems innocuous enough until Pete Rose takes Donovan deep and the Grays have knotted it up once more. Just the second longball for Charlie Hustle this season, but boy is it a biggie. Indianapolis 10, Washington 10 BOTTOM 7TH How will the Indianapolis boys respond? Meekly, as Santana sends them down in order. TOP 8TH Donovan regains his composure to get a clean inning. BOTTOM 8TH No problems for Santana as the game goes into the 9th still tied. TOP 9TH Just a hit for the Grays. BOTTOM 9TH Santana does just what he didn’t want and walks Betts to lead it off, prompting another pitching change as David Price enters the fray. He exits it just as quickly as Beauty Bancroft drills a 2-2 fastball into the left-field bleachers to give the Arrows a dramatic walkoff win. Indianapolis 12, Washington 10 (final). WP: Bill Donovan (1-6) LP: Johan Santana (2-2) POTG: Zach Wheat 3-5 / 3B / 4 RBI. Man oh man, what an epic comeback win for the home side in yet another scintillating Game of the Week that apparently shows just how much I know about baseball. Zack Wheat was superb for the Grays in a losing cause as both sides’ offences really put on a show. Bill Donovan vultures his first win of the year while Santana takes the loss to fall to 2 and 2. The win narrows the gap between these two sides to eight games and the Arrows will be looking to tighten that up again by completing the series sweep here tomorrow. It’ll be tough to top this one, that’s for sure, but we’ll be trying to again next week as we head to Comcast Field in Jersey City to see Uncle Robbie’s New Jersey Stallions battle it out with Connie Mack’s Connecticut Colonials. Looking forward to seeing you then, have a great week in the meantime.

A Prince Among Men
By Nik Hill, Head Commentator, PBL-TV
As the second month of this 1961 PBL season comes to a close, one player continues to stand out for his sterling on-field performance: Florida outfielder “Prince” Albert Pujols. The 21-year-old Dominican-born superstar has dominated Southeast League pitchers, and is one of the main reasons his Panthers sit atop the South Division standings – albeit only by 2 games from both Atlanta and Kansas City – with a solid record of 32-21. To make it slightly more equitable, let’s look at where he sits in some of the stat categories on a combined basis, in other words for the entire PBL.
The really impressive thing about all of this is his BABIP of .335 is below his .353 BA, so it’s not as if this amazing productivity is unsustainable. Were he to somehow be able to maintain this pace, here’s how this season will end up for The Prince: 41 home runs 79 doubles 149 RBI 89.6 wRAA 11.4 WAR I’m sure all of you, like me, would love to see him do that. If he does, we may need to promote him to King.
