The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired infielder Donovan Walton in a trade with the San Francisco Giants in exchange for first baseman Luken Baker.
Walton, 29, had been playing at AAA Sacramento this season, where he had hit .253 with nine homers and 39 RBIs in 50 games.
Drafted in the fifth round of the 2016 draft by Seattle, Walton has played 61 games/29 starts in the majors and hit .179 with three homers and 20 RBIs.
He is primarily a second baseman and also can play shortstop and third base.
Baker, 26, was selected in the second round of the 2018 draft by the Cardinals out of TCU.
He has spent the bulk of the 2023 season at AAA Memphis, where he had played in 7 games/6 starts and hit .200 with one homer and three RBIs.
Baker made his major league debut earlier this month and got into 3 games/two starts with the Cardinals going 0 for 7 at the plate.

Following the trade with San Francisco to acquire middle infielder Donovan Walton, the St. Louis Cardinals made a corresponding move sending down infielder Samad Taylor and calling up veteran first baseman Jesus Aguilar from AAA Memphis.
Taylor, 24, started the regular season on the Cardinals roster but managed to get into just 12 game/5 starts and is still looking for his first hit having gone 0 for 22.
Signed to a minor league contract in the offseason, Aguilar, 32, has spent the entire season at Memphis where he hit .240 with eight homers and 18 RBIs in 29 games/25 starts.
Aguilar split the 2022 season between Miami (113 games/106 starts) and Baltimore (16 games/12 starts) and hit a combined .235 with 16 homers and 51 RBIs.
For his career, Aquilar is a .254 hitter with 109 homers and 393 RBIs.

The St. Louis Cardinals have sent struggling infielder Nolan Gorman to AAA Memphis and called up veteran infielder Cory Spangenberg.
Gorman, 23, has played 37 games/34 starts for St. Louis, batting just .207 with three homers in 11 RBIs.
In four previous games with the Redbirds, starting three, Gorman hit .167 with two homers and four RBIs.
Spangberg, 32, has started all 57 games for Memphis, hitting .238 with 10 homers and 24 RBIs.
He has 420 MLB games under his belt and is a career .256 hitter with 29 homers and 119 RBIs.
