The 1911 World Series: Boston Red Sox vs. St. Louis Cardinals
Results Game 1, October 15th, 1911, Huntington Avenue Grounds World Series Game 1 Victory for Ford and Boston The Boston Red Sox started the World Series in style today, downing the visiting St. Louis Cardinals at Huntington Avenue Grounds by a score of 8-2 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Red Sox right-hander Russ Ford threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball. The Red Sox benefited from a costly error in the bottom of the second. With Frank Schulte at bat and Boston leading 2-0, the St. Louis miscue allowed Boston to plate 2 and take the lead, 4-0. "We're one game closer to our goal," Boston manager Jimmy McAleer said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Huntington Avenue Grounds in Boston. Red Sox lead 1-0 Game 2, October 16th, 1911, Huntington Avenue Grounds St. Louis Win Knots Series at 1 Behind a bravura effort from starter George Winter, the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Boston Red Sox by the score of 4-2 today and got their first win in the 1911 World Series. Winter threw 9.0 innings of 5-hit ball for the Cardinals. The win moves St. Louis into a 1-1 tie with Boston. Runs were scarce in this one. So, Lee Tannehill's at-bat in the top of the ninth was vitally important. With no one out, the St. Louis shortstop hit a sacrifice fly, to give his team a 3-2 lead. "It has been an incredible experience today," Winter said in the clubhouse following the game. "It's a short list of people who have started in the World Series at all, and an even shorter list who have done a good job of it." Game 3 is scheduled for Wednesday at League Park in St. Louis. Series tied at 1-1 Game 3, October 18th, 1911, League Park Cardinals Rally Past Red Sox to Claim 2-1 Series Lead When the games really matter, the St. Louis Cardinals put on their best show, beating the Boston Red Sox by a final score of 7-6 today. Hans Lobert went 4-5 with 3 triples, while scoring 3 times and driving in 2. St. Louis now leads Boston 2-1 in the best-of-7 affair. Myron Grimshaw was the walk-off hero for St. Louis. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Cardinals pinch hitter hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home. "We lost," Boston manager Jimmy McAleer said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at League Park in St. Louis. Cardinals lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 19th, 1911, League Park Almost There: St. Louis On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 5-4 Win A clutch 9th inning gave the St. Louis Cardinals a walk-off win over the Boston Red Sox and a 3-1 lead in the World Series at League Park today. Young right-hander Walter Johnson, 23, pitched well for the Cardinals. He threw 9.0 innings allowing 4 runs. In the bottom of the ninth, with two out and the game tied, 4-4, shortstop Ed Abbaticchio won it for St. Louis. With a runner on 2nd, Abbaticchio hit a first pitch fastball from Russ Ford for a run-scoring double, giving his team the 5-4 win. "We're happy," Johnson told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at League Park in St. Louis. Cardinals lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 20th, 1911, League Park Cardinals Take Title The St. Louis Cardinals ignited a huge celebration as they beat the Boston Red Sox 5-3 to win the World Series. St. Louis won the series 4-1, capturing the title for the 2nd time. "We stepped it up at the right time, and now we're the champs," said St. Louis manager Mauricio Martinez. "It's a great feeling." The champs finished the regular season 98-56 and claimed first place in the NL. In the jubilant clubhouse after the decisive game, series MVP and first baseman Jake Daubert said the Cardinals have "great fans and they deserve this." "I am so happy for our city right now," he said. Cardinals win series 4-1 Series MVP: Jake Daubert |

The 1912 World Series: Detroit Tigers vs. St. Louis Cardinals
Results Game 1, October 9th, 1912, Robison Field Wheat, Tigers Wallop Cardinals in Game 1 of WS The Detroit Tigers started the World Series in style today, winning on the road against the St. Louis Cardinals at Robison Field by a score of 9-1 to take an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Tigers left fielder Zack Wheat excelled. He went 3-5 with a home run and a triple. He scored 2 runs and drove in 4. Buck Herzog, the slick-fielding third baseman, had a direct impact on the outcome. Herzog contributed a 2-run single in the top of the second inning to put Detroit up, 2-1. "Before the game, I told the guys that what happened today would set the tone for the rest of the series," Cardinals manager Mauricio Martinez said after the loss. "I'm really hoping I was wrong about that." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Robison Field in St. Louis. Tigers lead 1-0 Game 2, October 10th, 1912, Robison Field Cardinals Clip Tigers 1-0 in WS Contest The St. Louis Cardinals got a complete game effort from starter George Winter to move into a 1-1 tie with the Detroit Tigers in the best-of-7 World Series. The St. Louis right-hander went the distance at Robison Field, cooling off the Detroit Tigers and striking out 1 to help St. Louis take the 1-0 win that knotted the series. Winter was superb for St. Louis, as he muffled the Detroit offense. The right-hander went the distance, shutting out the Tigers on 5 hits. "It has been an incredible experience today," Winter said in the clubhouse following the game. "It's a short list of people who have started in the World Series at all, and an even shorter list who have done a good job of it." Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at Navin Field in Detroit. Series tied 1-1 Game 3, October 12th, 1912, Navin Field Detroit Wins at Home to Take 2-1 Lead in WS Riding the 2-hit performance of center fielder Tris Speaker, the Detroit Tigers stopped the visiting St. Louis Cardinals, 6-4, in Game 3 of the World Series today. Speaker was 2 for 2 with a double and 2 walks. He drove in 2 runs and scored once for the Tigers, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 1. Detroit took advantage of an error in the bottom of the eighth inning. The game was tied, 3-3, when Zack Wheat hit a run-scoring single that was misplayed. It put Detroit in front, 4-3. Cardinals manager Mauricio Martinez did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Navin Field in Detroit. Tigers lead 2-1 Game 4, October 13th, 1912, Navin Field Almost There: Detroit On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 8-3 Win The Detroit Tigers got a strong performance from pitcher Harry Suter, who stymied the visiting St. Louis Cardinals en route to a win, 8-3, in Game 4 of the World Series today. The Cardinals could never get a bead on the left-handed Suter, who threw 7.0 innings of 6-hit ball. The Tigers now hold a 3-1 in the best-of-7 series. Whitey Alperman had a critical at-bat with no one out in the bottom of the sixth for Detroit. He came through with a 2-run single to put Detroit in front, 5-2. "We lost," St. Louis manager Mauricio Martinez said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Navin Field in Detroit. Tigers lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 14th, 1912, Navin Field World Series to Tigers Sometimes the winner is the one who got the lucky bounces and the lucky calls, and sometimes the winner is just the one who played better. It was the latter case in 1912, as the Detroit Tigers topped the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 tonight at Navin Field to win the World Series. It was the 1st title in franchise history. "When you play for championships, you have to play better than the team in the other dugout. We did that in this series, and all year. Now we're the best team in baseball," said Detroit center fielder Tris Speaker, who was named series MVP. The Tigers took the series 4-1. The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the AL and a 95-59 record. Detroit manager Ned Hanlon grinned and nodded when asked to comment on Speaker's words. "Tris said it best -- we played better than the other team," the skipper said. Hometown officials announced they were already planning a "grand celebration" for the winners in the days to come. Tigers win series 4-1 Series MVP: Tris Speaker |
