My sister was vegetarian for over a decade, until she and her partner had their first child. (She carried both times.) She said the child wanted meat, she could tell it. And that was that.

I can't give any 2021 health tales of woe as dramatic as Westheim's but that was when I had to use a cane to get around, due to a slow-healing tear to my quadriceps. It is now thought that the unnatural gait I had to affect, combined with the reduced muscle action putting a strain of my lymphatic system's ability to drain fluid, is what led to the edema and early-stage COPD I was suffering by year's end.

(When I finally got to the hospital [which was drama on its own…] and got my thoracentesis, the Dr was all "let's take out 1.5 litres to start"…and there turned out to only be 615 ml total in there. It's just that everything had a cascading effect on everything else.

It also didn't help that I was popping a number of pills, from mood stabilizers to vitamin supplements to Metformin and briefly a statin. All perfectly safe on their own, but the interreactions must have put even more strain on me. Since I got out of the rehab center in January 2022, I've been mostly pill-free, bar a stabilizer if I get really blue or an ibuprofen if my arthritis gets cranky. Much, much better this way. JMO.)

It's sad, really. I occasionally mention having the ability in OOTP to (re-)fashion baseball to have the great pitchers of old, but it's not really the same.

How Analytics Marginalized Baseball’s Superstar Pitchers

Stop and imagine for a minute being the gutless autopilot manager who removes a pitcher from a potential no-hitter after six innings merely because he's hit the 100 pitch mark.

We talked about this earlier. Apparently Devers has had a change of heart.

Rafael Devers says he’s OK to be DH on Opening Day

As Rafael Devers prepares to DH full-time, his move stands out in baseball history

I wonder, though, just how the conversation(s) with Cora and Breslow went. Was it:

1) Devers was just excited at first when the news about Bregman's signing broke, and he blurted his feelings only to reconsider later and decide to put the team's interests ahead of his own?

2) Cora and Breslow told him bluntly that his glove was a detriment to the team and that he needed to DH whether he wanted to or not?

3) Some "future considerations" came down from on high to calm unsettled waters and sweeten everyone's disposition?

These possibilities are in reverse order of likelihood.

I think it has to be closest to #2. I bet Rafy never liked the Bregman signing, was reluctant to move, and finally just figured it wasn't worth the fight anymore. Glad to see it though, the Sox defense should be much improved this year.

Happy Opening Day.

Time for the Brewers to finish 10 games ahead of the Cubs again.

Cardinals are going to suck as well. They will be better with Goldy gone (I know, I know), but they lost their #2 starter.

Cards will win 83, Cubs 83, and Brewers 90.

MLB TV is blatantly not working for me.

Oh well. Maybe next year.

45 minutes later, there's finally moving pictures.

And from a bit of googling, I was not the only one with issues. Wildly not.

Good job, Rob. Have a bonus!

Aaargh. Here I am, traveling on the real Opening Day. (It seems to be a ridiculous amount of time since I posted "And we're off." Why were those two games in Tokyo scheduled so early?)

Anyway, I congratulate myself once again for refraining from MLB.tv, seeing the above. You know, there is no guarantee that the complicated technical process in streaming TV works; I was reminded of that twice recently.

Gotham Sports says "Watch NY sports teams on your PC; just sign on with your Cable TV provider logon." Result: blank screen.

Boomcoach enthuses about FanDuel Sports Network and I figure I would give it a looksee. The result is post #125.

I am taking a serendipity approach to sports viewing from now on. Whatever I run across in my travels, I will watch.

Microsoft Copilot of all entities, in response to my query, directed me to Sports Media Watch which should be quite handy in this regard. And I won't be spending another darned dime.

Meanwhile, Tyler O'Neill has extended his record of homering on Opening Day to a sixth consecutive year. He was already alone at the top with five last year.

The White Sox drop the Angels, 8-1, and are now 1-0 to start the season.

Only 40 more to match last year's W total!

I think I did this right... I calculated O'Neill's odds of doing this at 0.00415749%. That's less than 1/200th of a single % chance! I thought it was pretty amazing at 4 or 5, but 6?!

So, we are sitting in a Tavern in the Square just outside of Boston, having dinner. Normally we wouldn't choose a sports bar/restaurant but this one was convenient and we know it has good food if you can stand the crowd and noise.

It was relatively quiet but suddenly there was a tremendous roar. I mean, LOUD. At first, I thought there had been a calamity but then I remembered: this is a sports bar! What great event had occurred?

Well, they had a number of different games showing on the many TV monitors hung around the restaurant: baseball, pro basketball, March Madness. But over the bar, the screens were all tuned to the Red Sox - Rangers game.

I ambled over to the bar, trying to look casual. Of course, I spoke to no one in order to not reveal my accent. When I looked up, I saw what it was in replay:
Quote:
Wilyer Abreu hit a three-run shot in the ninth inning for his second homer of the opener, powering the Boston Red Sox past the Texas Rangers 5-2 on Thursday.
That was my baptism to the world of sports bars. Man, it was loud, but I can see the attraction.

I had no issues watching the Reds blow a lead in the 9th. Not an ending I like, but the first Reds game I have been able to see start to finish in 3 years.

Rays can't even fill a single-A ballpark for their home opener.

If I was in the community, I wouldn't attend either. They gotta sell the team or move. Why should customers show love to a biz that doesn't even make a pretense of love back?

Jack Flaherty comes back to Dodgers stadium and they give him a World Series ring. Nestor Cortez comes back to the Bronx and the Yankees beat him black and blue. 5 bombs in 2 innings. That will make you question your future.
