You can start with the facepack, which has a photo of all but 600 of the 17,814 historical Major League players. You can find download links in my signature line, or here.

You might also try the Pegasus27 Batters pack and Pitchers pack. These packs contain different team options for most players in the era you're asking about. You can download a copy of the Batters Pack here and the Pitchers Pack here.

At one time in the Fifties, more than half the starting catchers in the American League came out of the Yankee farm system. The Yankees had Berra and Howard. Here are some guys who couldn't make it with New York, but started for other teams. Note that they never appeared on Topps cards as Yankees

Here's three more Yankee catchers. Note that Wilmer Shantz came up with the A's and never started for anybody in the majors. His claim to fame was that he was Bobby Shantz's brother.

Some that got away. Burdette was traded for Johnny Sain. Virdon for Enos Slaughter. At least the Yankees traded these two guys out of the league. Held went to the A's in one of the many deals between them and the Yankees in the Fifties.
