Apparently "Tompkins" is Cubs 1968 #1 draft pick Ralph Rickey, who was being converted from outfield to pitching during Spring Training in 1971 and thus drawing more press than a guy who had never (and would never) make the Show normally would. Tompkins has this little "ear-slash" thing that the #59 in the picture doesn't have (although you can't see that part of the ears in this picture, but there are other pictures of the player on Flickr, apparently).

Archie Reynolds has wispier eyebrows and his nostrils aren't as flared. (He also has the "ear-slash", too.) Besides, he'd worn #46 during 1969, so it would be odd for him to get kicked up to #59 during Spring Training 1970 (the first training camp where these uniforms were available, as the Cubs didn't wear this design until '69). As it turned out, Archie wore 39 (the number he'd worn during his 1968 debut) in 1970, so he went down, not up, numerically.

Oh, well.

The quest for Tompkins in color goes on, apparently.

Anyone have any suggestions as to the identity of this Cleveland player?

From 1892 onwards the Spiders appear to have a mainly white uniform. In 1889 and 1891 it appears the uniform was dark but with a white collar. This appears to pinpoint the uniform as the 1890 Cleveland Infants Players League team. The American Association Cleveland team appeared not have Cleveland across their dark uniforms.

The team photo is of the 1890 Cleveland Players League team, unfortunately unidentified. Possible match top second from right. Note also the slight curve in the lettering for this player whereas the lettering for the others appears straight. Maybe a clean shaven Cub Stricker.

I do not believe it is Cub Stricker (left below). The hair line, among other disqualifiers, is wrong. It may be Jimmy McAleer (right below), but strangely enough I do not have any playing career images showing him facing to his right. I have also included a Cleveland Infants team image from Sporting Life with identifications.

The image identified above as Red Morgan was featured in the latest edition of Mark Fimoff's superb Mystery Photo Supplement published within the auspices of SABR. The image is not as advertised one of Red Morgan but as identified by Matt Fulling one of Chick Evans.
