Dave Boswell 1964 - 1971 Tigers Uniform

Dave Boswell, one of three pitchers born in Baltimore to have a 20-win season (the others were Eddie Rommel and Babe Ruth), had a hard-luck career. His first pitch in the major leagues was hit for a home run by Felix Mantilla (over the Green Monster in Fenway Park) and his second major-league pitch was smacked high off the wall by Tony Conigliaro…a homer in every other park, but a double at the Fens.

(In later years, Boswell would misremember Carl Yastrzemski hitting his third pitch down the RF line for a double, but that was in the second inning; Boswell got out of the first with only the one run scoring, and got the first two men in the second, before giving up a hit to the Red Sox pitcher, Pete Charton, and walking Mantilla and Tony C to fill the sacks for Yaz. Still, the Twins got Boz off the hook before falling in 10 innings, 7-6.)

But Boswell eventually won a spot in the Twins' rotation and went 20-12 in 1969, a feat somewhat more impressive for his having missed 18 games after his manager, Billy Martin, beat Boswell unconscious (and left him requiring 20 stitches) in an alleyway behind the Lindell A.C. bar in Detroit that August. Don't f*ck with Billy.

Still, he returned, finished strong, and pitched 9 strong innings in Game 2 of the ALCS against the Orioles. Unfortunately, the game was tied, and in the 10th, Boswell not only lost the game but hurt his shoulder. One game later, the Twins' season (and Billy Martin's career in Minnesota) was over, and in 1970 Boswell struggled to a 3-7 mark.

Ineffective in Spring Training in 1971, Boswell was cut by the Twins, only to be signed by, of all teams, Detroit…which was managed by, of all people, Billy Martin. (Probably Tigers GM Jim Campbell made the move to convince the Detroit fans that his new manager was a different man from the Billy who had fought with Boswell in Minnesota.)

Well, Billy didn't punch Boswell in 1971…but he didn't call for him that much, either. Boswell made only three relief appearances before the Tigers cut him at the end of May; he promptly signed with his hometown Orioles and finished the season with the division winners. But he was cut the next spring, ending his career.

Boswell's 3-game stint as a Tiger doesn't seem to be represented in the Pitchers' Pack (although he's not on the UIN list…) so here is a picture of him taken by Topps when the Bengals came to Yankee Stadium that spring:

Boswell died this July, at the age of 67.

The closest I have is this 1965 spring training image, with the Texas flag sleeve patch (used by Colts but not Astros) and the no-H transition hat. Sorry...

Not in the Pitchers' Pack. The last image is reduced from 130x195…I meant to copy it and reduce the copy, but…

Danny Coombs 1963

There was a 1963 press photo of Coombs sold recently on eBay, but I could only find a Worthpoint listing, so the image is small:

Name: Dan_Coombs 1963 PressPhoto.jpg
Views: 1714
Size: 43.8 KB

Don't know why the ".45s" on the cap is blacked out.

At least one other image exists, as a "Retrocards" set was made for the 1963 Colts, and Coombs has a card, but the only image I could find of the card is just a thumbnail:

Name: 1963T-Coombs.jpg
Views: 1852
Size: 6.7 KB

Still, better than nothing, I guess. I think it's a bit unfair that Coombs (and Joe Hoerner and Jim Dickson) were not included in the pictures of the "All-Rookie Game" of September 27th, 1963, as they pitched in relief of starter Jay Dahl, because they were all rookies, too. (It was the debut game for Coombs and Hoerner; Dickson had debuted in July.) But only the starting 9 made the pictures.

Hank Aguirre - Dodgers 1968

I didnt even realize I didnt have a photo of Hank Aguirre with the dodgers. When I realized it, I called on my friend Mark who did his magic transforming the cub uniform into a dodger one. As you can see, he is far superior to me in editing hats/unis.

Marty Keough 1956 - 1966 Cubs uniform

The current Keough/Cubs picture is a B&W profile shot, so a face-on color pic is definitely a step up.

Except that it's got a case of the Topps Excessively-Red syndrome, and I haven't been able to cure it properly. Here's as good as I've gotten, with the original as a reference point:

Name: Marty_Keough 1966-am696.jpg
Views: 1527
Size: 11.1 KBName: Marty_Keough 1966-am696 copy.jpg
Views: 1640
Size: 38.3 KB

I'm sure someone with better skills can improve on my "work" here. (I tried to use an editing program, but I don't know how to separate the face so that I can get the skin tone correct without over-blueing the uniform, for example. I only know how to filter the image as a whole, not the component parts.)

Interesting to see Keough wearing a road uniform with "Chicago" in red letters, outlined in blue; according to Dressed to the Nines, the Cubs wore blue-outlined-in-red until they changed to simple blue lettering in '69. Variant uniform, or does the Hall have the color scheme wrong?

Also, wtf happened to Keough's face? He wasn't nearly this wizened with Cincinnati in 1962 or '63 (can't tell the year by the uniform, but that's the Polo Grounds behind him):

Apparently, life in Cincinnati takes a lot out of you. Who knew?

Elmer Singleton 1945 Alt Uni Cubs

Here's another pass. I adjusted the entire original image posted above (not separate areas) using Paint.NET. First I used the auto-level feature, then fine-tuned it by individually adjusting the color levels using the RGB curve, brightness/contrast and hue/saturation settings. The one on the right is additionally lightened by moderately raising all color levels with the RGB curve.

It appears I've misled myself…

Certainly looks more like Old Smokey than a weathered Marty (despite the similar ears and chin, and Marty's equally invisible eyebrows in the Reds pic). My bad.

My question is, where was this taken? I could have sworn this was at Shea (the scoreboard over the shoulder) but that can't be. Given Elmer's tenure as a Cubbie ran from 1957-1959, I guess it's the Polo Grounds. (In 1957, obviously.) Huh.

On further investigation, yes, that's a 1957 uniform. The stripe on the cap gives it away. The shirt actually says "Chicago Cubs" (we just can't see "Cubs") and in '57 they actually did use the red letters, outlined in blue (which Dressed to the Nines does have wrong), as seen in the 1957 Tom Poholsky I posted ages ago.

So, all in all, a waste of time. That's what I get for not IDing the entire section of the archive and making sure the picture fits in logically. Not sure why they're skipping from "Singleton" to "Keough", from Cubs to Reds, from 1957 to 1962, but if I'd done a better job figuring out who that was in the pics before Singleton, I wouldn't have been so quick to assume.

Ah, live and learn. Thanks for catching the error. Just making sure you were all on your toes, yeah, that's the ticket! Honest.
