Cards news: July 19 -- 2B Arranez dealt to Mets in exchange for SP Matt Allan
The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired right-handed starting pitcher Matt Allan from the New York Mets in exchange for second baseman Luis Arraez and minor league pitcher Ramiro Grandos.
Looking to fill the void left after ace Tink Hence saw his career end with a second elbow ligament injury, the Cardinals acquired Allan hoping to add a top of the rotation starter. The 27-year-old has made 19 starts this season going 5-10 with a 4.79 ERA. For his career, he has pitched in 195 games/114 starts since breaking in in 2023 with the Mets. He owns a career record of 38-37 with 17 saves and a 3.54 ERA. St. Louis added Arraez, 31, in the offseason hoping the former four-time .300-plus hitter would provide some spark at the top of their batting order. Instead, they got a .249 hitter with no power and just average defense at second base. Signed out of the Domincan Republic in November of 2027, Grandados has a high upside but at 17-year-old is a long way from even thinking about making the majors. The Cardinals also are expected to recall shortstop Wilman Diaz from AAA Memphis. Diaz, 24, started the season in the majors as the Cardinals starting shortstop. He played in 31 games and hit just .188 with three homers in 11 RBIs. During his time at AAA, he got into 47 games and hit .239 with nine homers and 22 RBIs. Cards news: July 24 -- Lausch promoted from AAA, Billings sent down
The St. Louis Cardinals have promoted outfielder Jack Lausch from AAA Memphis and sent first baseman Phoenix Billings down to the Redbirds.
Lausch, 24, has bounced back and forth from the majors to AAA. He started the season strong as the Cardinals starting center fielders, but he is currently hitting just .195 with six home runs and 22 RBIs in 71 games/67 starts against major league pitching. In AAA, Lausch has played 20 games and hit .282 with four home runs and 11 RBIs. Billings won the Cardinals starting first baseman's job out of spring training but after an April where he hit .280 with five homer and 17 RBIs, things have steadily gone downhill. Thus far, in 87 games/83 starts, Billings has hit .211 with 14 homers and 43 RBIs. |

Cards news: July 25 -- Deal with Detroit lands OF Hunter Renfroe
Looking to add another bat for the stretch run, the St. Louis Cardinals have acquired outfielder Hunter Renfroe from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for minor-league second baseman Tyler Pettorini.
A four-time All-Star, the 36-year-old Renfroe has been limited to just 66 games/64 starts this season for the Tigers but has been very productive in those games hitting .324 with 19 home runs and 46 RBIs. Renfroe missed the first part of the season having to sit for five weeks after suffering a strained oblique on March 30. He still was named to the American League All-Star team. Renfroe broke into the majors with the San Diego Padres in 2016. He played there until 2019. Since then, he has played for Tampa Bay (2020), Milwaukee (2022-23), Boston (2024-2025) Milwaukee (2026-27) and the Tigers. Taken in the 13th round of the 2013 draft by the Padres, Renfroe is a career .257 hitter with 359 home runs and 950 RBIs. The Cardinals will pay the remainder of his $13 million salary for this season. He will be a free agent at season's end. Signed to a minor-league contract by the Cardinals before the 2027 season, the 25-year-old Pettorini has played at high-A Peoria this season. He got into 20 games/2 starts and hit .360 with one home run and one RBI. |
