Lumpkin - You posted the above request for Larry Kissock and Dan A. Johnson photos last May. No one had photos of them then, and it's unlikely that anyone has photos of them now. Please don't repeat requests for the same obscure players.

1953 Reading Indians
This photo currently being auctioned by Baggers Auctions. A couple of the big names contained herein are Rocky Colavito and Herb Score. There are other major leaguers as well.
P.S. This the first time I've seen an image of pitcher Billy Ray Meyer, who was a non-roster invitee with the Cleveland Indians in 1953 and 1955. His baseball-reference.com record is at: http://www.baseball-reference.com/re...d=meyer-007wil Last edited by Cusick; 03-21-2017 at 02:44 PM. Reason: Add info about Billy Ray Meyer |

Jesse Cross: Two MLB camps, no MLB career
Among the images I picked up from unclemaxie this past week were several of local pitching legend Jesse Cross. Jesse, who still lives in Ringgold just outside of Chattanooga, was drafted by Toronto in the 62nd(!) round in 1988 and signed, in his words, "for a set of cleats."
But he rose through the rank, especially with a superb 13-7, 3.29 in Dunedin in 1990, and after a 10-win season at Knoxville in 1991, he was selected by the Twins in the Rule V draft. Despite an ankle injury, he remained until the last cut, when he was returned to the Blue Jays -- who did not expect him to return and who initially did not have a place for him. Cross hung tough and had a terrific 3.16 ERA for triple-A in '93 to earn an invite to the Toronto cam;;. After a 14-win season for Class AAA Syracuse in 1994 and with the major leagues in the midst of a strike, Cross saw more of a future in raising a family of athletes and retired. Les Rohr (Williamsport Mets, 1965)
Ordinarily, I don't like on-line newspaper images, except as a last resort. There's just, usually, not much to work with. An original newspaper is better (in putting newspapers on-line, they're more interested in preserving the words than the images, and I get that). But this one isn't too bad, as these things go. I was not looking for Les Rohr, but here he was...in the July 8, 1965 edition of the Berkshire Eagle. Lots of (generally) poor images of Les in a Mets uniform with Warren Spahn from the same period, but I like seeing him in the Williamsport uni. Colors, btw, are Mets colors--"Williamsport" is blue with orange trim. Oh, heck...here.

Dick Starr
Googling up some of the recently deceased sometimes brings up images that I find interesting. So I bring them here that, perhaps, others might also find them interesting. In this case, we have a pair of pictures of Dick Starr, who pitched for the Yankees, Browns and Senators. When I first saw the Orioles image (and not knowing much about Starr), I sorta figured it was a major league image--possibly he drifted into their camp one year and didn't make the cut (hey, its why I do it at all because my knowledge base is crap before 1962). So I figured he pitched for the Browns, the Browns became the Orioles, yada yada. So, yeah, it's the minor league Orioles (either '52 or '53), then a farm club for the Phillies. The image comes from Goldin Auctions. The other image is Dick with the 1942 Butler Yankees and comes from a site devoted to Pullman Park. I grey-scaled both images because I do that sort of thing.

Jim DePalo
I think necrology for career minor leaguers still belongs on the minor league thread. If I'm mistaken, someone please correct me.
Pitcher Jim DePalo died on March 29, 2017. He was on the New York Yankees' spring roster in 1956 and 1957. The photo is from his obituary. A color image of him can be found in the 1979 TCMA Baseball History Series (card #82). http://www.baseball-reference.com/re...d=depalo001jam |
