Cards news: Nov. 15 -- 2B Boston Baro wins NL Silver Slugger

The St. Louis Cardinals have learned that second baseman has earned the National League Silver Slugger as the best hitting player at his position.

Baro, 24, in 145 gams hit .28 with 17 home runs, 72 RBIs and 79 runs scored. He also led all of baseball with 48 stolen bases. Baro got on base at a .357 clip, slugged .451 and had an .808 OPS. He missed the week-plus of the regular season with a strained hamstring. |

Cards news: Dec. 7 -- Minor-league deal lands infielder Jose Ramos from Giants for two pitchers

The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired minor-league infielder Jose Ramos from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for minor-league right-handed pitchers Sam Gerth and Ramon Ortega.

Ramos, 26, split last season between AA Richmond and AAA Sacaramento. In 110 games/120 starts, he hit .276 with 10 home runs and 60 RBIs. The Giants acquired Ramos as a minor-league free agent out of Columbia in July 2019. Gerth, 24, never pitched in the Cardinals' minor-league system having signed a minor-league contract on November 5 of this year after being released by the Colorado Rockies. He split time this season between Class A Freemont and AAA Albuquerque. In 23 starts, all but two in Class A, he went 5-4 with a 4.97 ERA. Gerth entered pro baseball after being taken in the 14th round of the 2024 draft by Colorado. The 18-year-old Ortega, who was signed as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic, spent this past season in the Dominican Rookie League. He made 10 starts going 2-3 with a 4.43 ERA. |

Cards news: Dec. 15 -- IF Saggese goes to KC for C Fermin and minor-leaguer

The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired veteran catcher Freddy Fermin and minor-league outfielder Dylan Dreiling in exchange for infielder Thomas Saggese.

The 33-year-old Fermin is expected to serve as the backup for starting catcher Jimmy Crooks. A year ago, Fermin played both in the majors and at AAA Omaha. While with the Royals, he hit .28 with four home runs and 24 RBIs in 55 games/50 starts. Signed out of Venezuela in 2015, Fermin first broke into the majors with Kansas City in 2022. In 558 games/488 starts, he has hit .244 with 42 home runs and 200 RBIs. Sagesse, 26, has played a valuable role for the Cardinals as a utility infielder since breaking into the majors in 2024. Last season, he split times between the majors and AA Memphis. In 71 games/62 starts with St. Louis, he hit .22 with eight home runs and 30 RBIs. For his career, Saggese is a .244 hitter with 31 home runs and 131 RBIs in 302 games/274 starts. Drafted by the Rangers in the second round of the 2024 draft before being traded to the Royals in Dec. 2024, the 25-year-old Dreiling split the 2028 season between Class A and AAA Omaha. In 100 games/83 starts, he hit .285 with 23 home runs and 74 RBIs. |

Cards news: Dec. 18 -- SP Mathews and OF Scott II go to Washington for SS Abrams

The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired two-time All-Star shortstop C.J. Abrams from the Washington Nationals in exchange for starting pitcher Quinn Mathews, outfielder Victor Scott II and minor-league pitcher Dave Martinez.

The 28-year-old Martinez hit .272 with 21 home runs and 66 RBIs in 152 games/147 starts for Washington last season. A former No. 6 overall pick by the Padres in the 2019 draft, Abrams made the All-Star team in 2024 and 2028. He broke into the majors with the Padres in 2022 before being dealt to Washington at the trade deadline. In 949 career games/911 starts, Abrams has hit .249 with 115 home runs and 417 RBIs. The 28-year-old Mathews has been a mainstay in the St. Louis rotation since breaking into the majors in 2025. He won double figure games in 2025 (11-7, 3.80 ERA), 2026 (12-11, 3.94) and 2028 (13-7, 3.70) and owns a career record of 43-33 with a 4.09 ERA over 121 games/120 starts. The departure 27-year-old Scott just seems to be the product of glut of outfielders in the Cardinals, with all of the other just owning more power at the plate. Last season, he got into 23 games/19 starts in the majors and hit .268 with one home run, six RBIs and 15 stolen bases. Overall, the fifth-round pick in the 2022 draft, has hit .209 with four home runs, 34 RBIs and 45 steals in 145 games/110 starts in the majors. Martinez, a 16-year-old prospect from Venezuela, has yet to pitch in a game at the major-league level. |

Cards news: Dec. 18 -- SS Masyn Winn sent to L.A. for LHP Maddux Bruns

It was easy to see this coming, following the Cardinals acquisition of shortstop C.J. Abrams, but shortstop Masyn Winn has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for left-handed pitcher Maddux Bruns.

The 26-year-old Winn had an impressive run in St. Louis. He broke into the majors late in the 2023 season and claimed the starting shortstop position in 2024's spring training. He's held it ever since, but a drop in performance at the place raised questions along with an occasional inconsistency defensively. And when Abrams became available. The Cardinals jumped at it. In 2028, Winn started 143 games/142 starts and hit .230 with seven home runs and 43 RBIs. Although, he did have a career high 41 steals. For his career, Winn was a .241 hitter with 48 home runs and 264 RBIs in 729 games/708 starts. A first-round pick in the 2021 draft by the Dodgers, Bruns finally made his major-league debut last season. In seven games, all in relief, he was 1-0 with one save and a 7.56 ERA. |
