I think Jose Reyes was the shortstop, but I can't remember if he left the Mets after 2011 or 2010. I'll go with it...final answer!

Pretty sure Daniel Murphy was on the 2011 Mets, but I don't remember what position he played there. I know he played 1B and 2B with the Nationals.

Yes, Jose starts his chase for the batting title in the same city (but not the same park) he departs for after the season:

1. Jose Reyes, ss
2.
3.
4.
5. Angel Pagan, cf
6.
7.
8.
9.

It should only be one guess at a time, but this is the second time Murph's been mentioned, so I'll be flexible. Murph's on the team, but not in the lineup. His missing the entire 2010 season with an injury (plus other factors) had him relegated to the bench at first. He doesn't appear in game #1, and only starts one game of the first nine. Then Terry sobers up (j/k!) and Murphy has a regular job…until he goes down for the year in August.

But then come four lovely years, culminating in curb-stomping the Cubbies, so it's all good. (Yes, even counting how well he hit us when he was a Gnat.)

NOT: Jason Bay (injured), Daniel Murphy (bench), Ruben Tejada (AAA).

Sorry, I missed Murphy's mention on the previous page.

Thinking about this more while eating breakfast because I have no life and love baseball history, I think the first baseman was a pretty highly touted prospect that played for Israel in the WBC a few years later. I remember getting his rookie card and thinking it may be worth something someday. Can't remember his name for the life of me. Maybe someone can help me out because I'm trying hard not to search it.

That would be Ike Davis.

That's your guess. Mine shall be Josh Thole behind the dish.

And we have two consecutive winners! Which is something the Mets didn't accomplish against an over-.500 team since…? The Dodger series, was it? (We won two of three in Milwaukee, but lost the middle game.)

Anyhow…

1. Jose Reyes, ss
2.
3.
4.
5. Angel Pagan, cf
6. Ike Davis, 1b
7.
8. Josh Thole, c
9.

NOT: Jason Bay (injured), Daniel Murphy (bench), Ruben Tejada (AAA).

At least one easy one still to go…but at least one (possible) stumper, too. Onward!

OMG, thanks for the assist! I'm trying not to look up anything Mets on baseball reference until we figure this out.

Not part of the fun, but was 2011 the year R.A. Dickey was the club's "Ace"? Or was that earlier / later?

RA's CYA was in 2012. His consecutive 1-hitters weren't too far away from Johan's no-no.

He doesn't get the Opening Day start, if that's the question. His first start is in Game 3.

1. Jose Reyes, ss
2.
3.
4.
5. Angel Pagan, cf
6. Ike Davis, 1b
7.
8. Josh Thole, c
9.

NOT: Jason Bay (injured), R.A. Dickey (later in rotation), Daniel Murphy (bench), Ruben Tejada (AAA).

Johan wasn't the Opening Day starter either. If I remember right, he missed all of 2011 with the shoulder capsule thing.

Here's one: Nick Evans at second base.

Nick Evans didn't play a game at 2b his entire ML career. (He plays two games at 3b this [2011] season and one in 2014 for the Snakes, but that's it.)

Where he plays to start the season, I'm not sure. But he's playing it for Buffalo, not the Mets. (2011 Mets debut for Evans comes on May 18.)

Now I just have to find out who I confused him with.

So is it Captain Wright at third base after all? Lots of good spots in the lineup left. Who'd play there but the Captain?

Not a soul, that's for sure! #5 playing the 5, and our 3b hitting in the 3-hole:

1. Jose Reyes, ss
2.
3. David Wright, 3b
4.
5. Angel Pagan, cf
6. Ike Davis, 1b
7.
8. Josh Thole, c

Was Carlos Beltran still roaming the OF for the Mets that year? Or was this after he was traded away?

Voltron (one assumes he wants to retire that name after his association with the Buzzstros…) ends the year as a Giant (in exchange for this Wheeler kid ), but he starts it as a Met. Ding!

1. Jose Reyes, ss
2.
3. David Wright, 3b
4. Carlos Beltran, rf
5. Angel Pagan, cf
6. Ike Davis, 1b
7.
8. Josh Thole, c

Was that the year Mike Pelfrey got the Opening Day start?

Yup! Johan's absence (I wasn't going to score his previous mention before he was formally guessed, but that's moot now) opened the door for Big Pelf to get his moment on the Bump! Wheatshocker Power!

1. Jose Reyes, ss
2.
3. David Wright, 3b
4. Carlos Beltran, rf
5. Angel Pagan, cf
6. Ike Davis, 1b
7.
8. Josh Thole, c
9. Mike Pelfrey, p

With David Wright at 3B, was Justin Turner at 2B? This is my last guess because the only other Mets around that time that I can name, that we haven't mentioned, are pitchers and Lucas Duda (who is not an answer).

After a brief (4 games) cameo in Flushing in 2010, Justin Turner had a coming-out party in 2011, getting into 117 games and battling Murphy for the 2B job all season long, until Murph dropped.

But…not yet. JT spends the first 10 games of the season at Buffalo, as with others previously named.

1. Jose Reyes, ss
2.
3. David Wright, 3b
4. Carlos Beltran, rf
5. Angel Pagan, cf
6. Ike Davis, 1b
7.
8. Josh Thole, c
9. Mike Pelfrey, p

NOT: Jason Bay (injured), R.A. Dickey (later in rotation), Nick Evans (AAA), Daniel Murphy (bench), Johan Santana (injured), Ruben Tejada (AAA), Justin Turner (AAA).

Keep going! You can do it!

Unless he is. The Mets at one point fooled around with him in leftfield.
