MLB news: Sept. 18 -- Braves will be in postseason once again

For the 11th consecutive season, the Atlanta Braves will be part of the National League playoffs as they clinched their second straight National League East championship with a 1-0 win over the Washington Nationals.
The Braves have won the NL East eight times during their run of postseason appearances.
Atlanta will likely be the No. 3 seed in the NL playoffs, as its trails Cincinnati (96-54), which sits atop the NL Central, by 11 games for the league's best record. NL West-leading San Francisco is 91-59.
The Braves last reached the World Series in 2021, when they defeated the Houston Astros.

MLB news: Sept. 19 -- Reds clinch NL Central Division title

The Cincinnati Reds sewed up their third straight National League Central Division championship with a 7-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Sept. 18.
The Reds (97-54) own the best record in the division by 12.5 game over the Milwaukee Brewers with 11 games remaining.
Cincinnati also is likely to be the overall top seed in the NL playoffs, as its record places the Reds five games ahead of the NL West-leading San Francisco Giants
The best record in the American League belongs to the Boston Red Sox, who sit atop the American League East with an 88-62 mark.

Cards news: Sept. 21 -- Reliever Jhoan Duran agrees to extension

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced they have signed right-handed relief pitcher Jhoan Duran to a two-year extension worth $14 million.
Acquired from the Miami Marlins prior to the 2027 season, Duran has pitched in 130 games for the Cardinals going 8-5 with 16 saves and a 2.65 ERA.
He has served as the team's closer since the All-Star break in 2028.
This season, he has worked in 60 games going 3-1 with 14 saves and a 2.31 ERA.
The 30-year-old will make $6.5 million next season. The 2030 season will see him with a $7.5 million salary, which includes a team opt out.

Despite a 9-6 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the San Francisco Giants have assured themselves a berth in the National League playoffs.
The Giants (92-61) lead the Arizona Diamondbacks by 6.5 games in the National League West Division with nine games remaining.
San Francisco trails National Central Division-leading Cincinnati by seven games for the best record in the NL.
The postseason appearance will be the fourth in the last five seasons for the Giants. It is their second straight NL West crown.
A year ago, San Francisco reached the World Series before falling to the Minnesota Twins.

The Boston Red Sox have sewed up at least a wild-card berth in the American League playoffs following a 3-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Red Sox (91-63) owns a six-game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East Division with eight games left in the season.
Boston also owns the best record in the American League by two games over the Los Angeles Angels, who lead the AL West, and 2.5 games over the Minnesota Twins, who sit atop the AL Central Division.
The playoff berth is the third in a row for Boston, but it has not won a division title since 2018.
That season also marked Boston's last World Series appearance, as it defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers.

MLB news: Sept. 25 -- Twins earn chance to defend World Series title

The defending World Series champion Minnesota Twins will get a chance to repeat after they earned their fifth consecutive trip to the postseason with a 6-2 win over the New York Yankees.
At 90-67, the Twins own a 1.5-game lead over the Kansas City Royals in the American League Central Division with five games remaining in the regular season.
The best overall record in the AL also remains up for grabs as AL East-leading Boston is 92-64 and the Los Angeles Angels top the AL West at 90-65.
A division title would be the second in a row for Minnesota, which defeated the Giants in the 2027 World Series.

With their 7-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals, the San Francisco Giants sewed up their second straight National League West Division crown.
The Giants (94-62) lead the second-place Arizona Diamondbacks by 7.5 games with six contests left in the season.
San Francisco already is assured of a first-round playoff bye as it will be the second seed in the NL playoffs behind the Cincinnati Reds, who won the NL Central with a 101-55 record.
The Giants will be striving to reach the World Series for the second consecutive year. They dropped the 2027 World Series to the Minnesota Twins.
San Francisco last won the World Series in 2014, when it defeated the Kansas City Royals.

For the first time since 2023, the Kansas City Royals are headed for the playoffs as a 3-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians assured them at least a wild-card berth in the upcoming postseason.
The American League Central Division championship remains in reach for the Royals, who at 90-68 sit just a half-game behind the division-leading Minnesota Twins.
If K.C. doesn't win the division, it could be the No. 2 seed in the wild card as it sits two-games ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays for that spot.
The Royals last made the World Series in 2015, when they defeated the New York Mets.

After winning three consecutive American League East Division titles, the Toronto Blue Jays are going back to the playoffs, but this time it will be as a wild card.
A 22-3 rout of the New York Yankees assured the Blue Jays a berth in October.
Toronto (89-70), which trails Boston by six games in the AL East with three games to go, sits a game in front of Kansas City for the top seed among the three wild cards.
It is the fifth straight trip to the playoffs for Toronto.
The Jays last made the World Series in 1993, when it capped the second of a back-to-back title runs.
