I really love the photos of players making their major league debuts. Thanks for the constant updating.
How many debuts have there been so far this season and how many players debut in the majors on average per year over the last 5 years?

Klondike Smith played for the 1912 New York Highlanders. For some reason his major league and minor stats are not together

But his minor league stats are under Frederick Smith

Here he is with the 1912 Rochester Hustlers.

Including the four players I just posted there have been 131 debuts so far this year. Total debuts for the previous ten years are:

2012: 206 (114 through 7/10)
2011: 239 (121 through 7/10)
2010: 203 (99 through 7/10)
2009: 204 (121 through 7/10)
2008: 238 (135 through 7/10)
2007: 211 (115 through 7/10)
2006: 221 (118 through 7/10)
2005: 206 (116 through 7/10)
2004: 208 (104 through 7/10)
2003: 182 (103 through 7/10)

...so this year appears to be shaping up to be a heavy debut year.

Today this thread passed two million page views, just under 16 months after reaching one million. During that time the thread averaged more than 2,000 views per day. It is the most-viewed thread in the OOTP forums, and as far as I know the only thread in any baseball photo forum to pass even one million views.

I'd like to thank the OOTP team for hosting our forum, and thanks to everyone who contributes, for making this such a great place to share and find baseball photos!

From convict to MLB player to losing his leg...

LeFlore played for the Tigers, Expos and White Sox (1974-82)

First arrested at fifteen, he was ultimately sentenced to 5–15 years in a state prison for armed robbery.

Incarcerated, the first organized baseball league LeFlore played in was for inmates. Jimmy Karalla, a fellow inmate, convinced Billy Martin, then manager of the Detroit Tigers, to observe LeFlore. Martin helped LeFlore get permission for day-parole and a try out at Tiger Stadium. In July 1973 the Tigers signed him to a contract which enabled LeFlore to meet the conditions for parole.

After the 1979 season, in which he hit .300 and stole 78 bases, LeFlore was traded in December to the Expos for pitcher Dan Schatzeder.

His 97 stolen bases for the Expos in 1980 are still a franchise record for the Expos and Washington Nationals.

In 1981 he signed with the White Sox as a free agent.

LeFlore lost his right leg to arterial vascular disease in the summer of 2011, a result of his having smoked cigarettes since he was a teenager.
