Major News Lee Richmond Records Win #250 Thursday, July 24th, 1890: His goal at twenty was to win twenty games one year, pitch until he was thirty, win the league pennant and to make some money. Well, Lee Richmond did something even better -- the 33-year-old Philadelphia Athletics star has now won 250 games in his career. That put him in a very select group of pitchers. He joined that exclusive club today at Eclipse Park I by whipping the Louisville Colonels 17-8, holding them to 12 hits in 9 innings while chalking up 10 strikeouts and 1 walk. In the post game interview, the modest Richmond said, "It's special to win 250 games. You don't do it by yourself. You do it with good stuff and a good bullpen. You are only as good as the guys behind you. Years from now I might look back on it and give myself a little pat on the back." Richmond has gone 250-222 with an ERA of 2.12 in his career, piling up 1774 strikeouts in 4148 innings pitched. Colonels Sweep Pittsburg in Round 1 Saturday, October 4th, 1890: It was a glorious moment at Recreation Park when Louisville claimed the 1890 Round 1 title with a 7-6 victory. Louisville players were jubilant as they swamped each other on the diamond after completing the fantastic sweep of the Pittsburg Alleghenys. Chants of "Thank you, Colonels" reverberated all around the ballpark when it was over. But in the losing dugout, sadness reigned. Commenting to reporters, the Alleghenys skipper described what it's like to lose. "Your heart is heavy... you are hurting... it's a very difficult time. And to be swept... it's embarrassing. You just want to forget it ever happened." But it was a season to remember for the Louisville Colonels. Their season record was 88-66 and good enough for first place in the American League. Then they topped it off by winning the Round 1 4-0. What a year! Off Season NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Thursday, October 2nd, 1890: North American BaseBall League announced the 1890 amateur draft pool today, a scant 30 days in advance of the actual draft. For scouts, it is the toughest challenge of the season, trying to come up with an educated guess as to what a young man in his late teens or early twenties is going to do at the professional level a good five years down the road, at best. Some will go on gut instincts; some will rely on years of experience; but most will find it disconcerting how much their team is beholden to Lady Luck. Choose well and they are geniuses; choose poorly and they are unemployed. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Frank McGinn, 21 year-old center fielder out of college. 2. Bert Inks, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 3. John McGraw, 17 year-old shortstop out of high-school. 4. Joe Kelley, 18 year-old left fielder out of high-school. 5. Frank Killen, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 6. George Davies, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 7. Fred Lake, 23 year-old catcher out of college. 8. Kid Carsey, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 9. Ted Breitenstein, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 10. Bill Dahlen, 20 year-old third baseman out of college. Retirements Charlie Eden 810 games, 901 hits, 465 RBIs. He was so good that he was christened with the National League Newcomer of the Year Award today. Nichols put up a 31-18 record in 52 starts. The Philadelphia rookie recorded a 2.13 ERA in 444 innings as he fanned 206 hitters and walked 81. American League Honors Boston's Meakim Friday, October 17th, 1890: George Meakim's age didn't show very often in his first year. He performed more like a veteran on the hill for the Boston Americans and today he walked away with the 1890 American League Newcomer of the Year Award. The 25-year-old starter registered a 30-21 record this season in 52 starts. Over 433.1 innings he gave up 432 hits, struck out 195 and issued 110 walks as he held the opposition to a .251 batting average and fashioned a 2.33 ERA. Nichols Named NL Outstanding Pitcher Award Winner Sunday, October 19th, 1890: The Philadelphia Phillies have a rising superstar or maybe even a budding Hall-of-Famer in the making. It's Kid Nichols, this year's National League Outstanding Pitcher Award selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance. Nichols compiled a 31-18 record in 52 starts, tallied 206 strikeouts in 444 innings and recorded a 2.13 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .252 batting average against him. Boston Americans Hurler AL's Premier Pitcher Sunday, October 19th, 1890: The Boston clubhouse staff referred to him as "the kid" this season. Next year George Meakim will have to have a new nickname. He threw 433.1 innings, fanned 195, allowed 432 hits and 110 walks, while holding opposing teams to a .251 average as he logged an impressive 2.33 ERA. Tiernan hit for a .349 average while collecting 219 hits, 54 doubles, 7 triples, 22 home runs, 110 RBIs and scoring 132 times. Off Season
Boston-Philadelphia Announce Swap Sunday, November 16th, 1890: In an effort to add some depth to its roster, the Boston Beaneaters have swapped 31-year-old second baseman Bid McPhee and 22-year-old reliever General Stafford to the Philadelphia Athletics for 29-year-old left fielder Charles Fisher. The Beaneaters GM told reporters, "We saw a chance to upgrade our ball club and took it." McPhee has a career .252 batting average with a .296 OBP. He has hit 14 homers, driven in 247 runs and scored 354 runs since he came into the league. Lifetime Fisher has hit for a .265 average and totaled 57 hits, no home runs and 20 RBIs. Wise and Keas Swapped Saturday, November 22nd, 1890: It's all done except the paperwork. The Cincinnati Reds and the Louisville Colonels have agreed to a trade that will send 33-year-old third baseman Sam Wise to Louisville, while 27-year-old reliever Ed Keas will be shipped to Cincinnati. A top front office executive with the Reds described the trade talks as "quick and easy." "We're glad to get this deal done. We think it's something that helps our ball club and it didn't take too long at all to sort this one out," he said. Wise has a career .238 average with 447 hits, including 85 doubles, 38 triples and 20 homers, collected 287 RBIs, scored 306 runs and compiled a .295 OBP. Statesmen-Phillies Trade: Irwin for Stemmeyer Monday, December 1st, 1890: It's being reported in the Washington press that the Statesmen have traded 29-year-old shortstop John Irwin to the Philadelphia Phillies for 25-year-old reliever Bill Stemmeyer. News 250 Wins for St. Louis's Wise Monday, April 20th, 1891: His goal at twenty was to win twenty games one year, pitch until he was thirty, win the league pennant and to make some money. Well, Bill Wise did something even better -- the 30-year-old St. Louis Browns star has now won 250 games in his career. That put him in a very select group of pitchers. He joined that exclusive club today at Sportsman's Park I by whipping the Cincinnati Reds 5-3, holding them to 8 hits in 9 innings while chalking up 6 strikeouts and 1 walk. In the post game interview, the modest Wise said, "It's special to win 250 games. You don't do it by yourself. You do it with good stuff and a good bullpen. You are only as good as the guys behind you. Years from now I might look back on it and give myself a little pat on the back." In his lifetime, the 30-year-old Wise has won 250 and lost 157, piling up 2133 strikeouts with a 2.00 ERA. Opponents have hit .242 against him. Great Stroke: Tiernan Gets 7 Hits Tuesday, April 21st, 1891: The Giants tripped up the Phillies 19-5 today, led by Mike Tiernan, their 24-year-old right fielder. He tagged Philadelphia pitching for 7 hits, making life miserable for them the entire game. Mike Tiernan hit a two-run single in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, doubled in the 4th, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 9th. This year Tiernan is batting .400 with 1 home run and 14 RBIs. In 14 games he has scored 14 times.

Swartwood Goes Cycling Monday, April 27th, 1891: Boston's Ed Swartwood accomplished what few others have been able to do -- he hit for the cycle. In baseball, a player hits for the cycle when he hits a single, a double, a triple and a home run in the same game, though not necessarily in that order. Collecting the hits in that order is known as a "natural cycle." For the day he finished 4-5 with 2 runs batted in and 3 runs scored and helped his Beaneaters knock off the Cincinnati Reds 9-8 at South End Grounds II. In the post game press conference he said, "I didn't even know I had hit for the cycle until after the game." Ed Swartwood hit a solo-shot off Hank Gastright in the 1st, struck out in the 3rd, hit an RBI double in the 5th, tripled in the 7th and singled in the 8th. The Philadelphia GM told reporters, "I think this trade is beneficial to everyone involved, including the players." In his career Lockwood has made 103 relief appearances and converted 9 saves. His record stands at 11-and-5 with a 2.41 ERA. A look at his season totals shows Dunlap with no home runs, .286 BA, .286 OBP, 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Career Over -- Bill Stearns Retires Thursday, May 7th, 1891: Sources in Cleveland close to Bill Stearns report that the reliever will retire once the season is over. Since he broke in, Stearns has picked up 284 wins and 267 losses with 4 saves. He has posted a 2.57 ERA and recorded 834 strikeouts in 4835 innings. Chicago will part with 28-year-old second baseman Danny Richardson, while the Orioles have dealt 27-year-old third baseman Woody Wagenhorst. "This one took a while to figure out," said the Chicago general manager. "We must have gone back to the drawing board five or six times over the past few weeks. I'm glad we finally got the deal done. I think it is a good one for both clubs." Richardson is presently hitting at a .351 pace with no home runs, 8 RBIs and has scored 6 times. Draft Pool NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Friday, October 2nd, 1891: North American BaseBall League divulged the 1891 list of eligible draftees today. It got little play in BNN coverage and why should it? Most players drafted in thirty days won't be on a big league club for years, if at all. Some will languish listlessly at the minor league level. Others will suffer a series of misfortunes, never quite making their mark, but always wowing scouts with their potential. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Brickyard Kennedy, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 2. Sam Dungan, 25 year-old right fielder out of college. 3. Jock Menefee, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 4. Willie Keeler, 19 year-old third baseman out of high-school. 5. Monte Cross, 22 year-old shortstop out of college. 6. Preseason 1892
League Nails Daily for Drug Abuse Friday, January 15th, 1892: Not a good day for baseball -- the league commissioner has suspended another player. This time for using recreational drugs. Both players were suspended 10 games by the league office as a result of their tussle. "It's something that happens in baseball every once in a while," Motz commented later. "We get frustrated with another player and sometimes things go too far. We'll both take our suspensions and then come back ready to play. I got no hard feelings." 1892 Season Baseball America Top 100 Prospects List Published Monday, April 4th, 1892: The season is about to start, so it's time for Baseball America to publish the annual Top 100 Prospects list. You don't see this happen very often." the Cincinnati manager said. Smith went 5-6 on the day and had 2 runs batted in and 4 runs scored -- and he got his name in the record book, too. "It was just one of those days," he said in the postgame interview. "I don't know how to explain it. I'm just putting a good swing on the ball." "Connor was locked in," the Philadelphia skipper said.
