Scottiedog, here's Brad Lesley's stats so far. He was an injury callup in his rookie year last year but he's started the season in the majors this year and has earned 2 wins so far in our 6-0 start this season.

Thanks Rocket, hopefully in this reality he becomes a superstar. I always liked him for some reason.

1983 - Rookie Debut
Seattle rookie pitcher Dennis Rasmussen made his first start today and pitched 8.2 strong innings before being lifted in the 9th. Rasmussen (1-0) earned the win in his debut and have eased some fears of the Seattle fans who bemoaned the loss of starter Bruce Kison for 3 months with rotator cuff inflammation.
Seattle won the game over Oakland 3-1 but it was in doubt for a while. The Athletics jumped on top 1-0 with a Gary Gaetti solo homer in the 2nd while Oakland starter Mike Bruhert held Seattle scoreless through 6 innings. After the Gaetti HR, Rasmussen matched Bruhert inning by inning and was rewarded when Tim Wallach hit a big 3-run homer off of Oakland reliever Danny Boone in the bottom of the 7th inning to give Seattle the 3-1 lead. Seattle manager Darrell Johnson was trying to let Rasmussen finish the game but things got too dicey in the 9th inning. Rasmussen got the first 2 outs but then walked Gene Tenace and Jim Essian to bring the go-ahead batter to the plate in Mike Vail. Johnson decided that that was enough for Rasmussen and he pulled him for closer Tom Gorman. Rasmussen left to a well-deserved standing ovation. Gorman promptly struck out Vail on 4 pitches to earn his 4th save and raise Seattle's record to a gaudy 9-1 for the season. Rasmussen's line for his debut was 8.2 IP, 5 hits, 1 ER, 5 K's, 5 BB's, 1 HR on 112 pitches. Last edited by BoilerRocketScientist; 08-26-2013 at 09:20 PM. |

1983 - Finally a Day Off!
In a quirk of scheduling, my Mariners started out with 20 straight games without a day off! Despite this disadvantage, we acquitted ourselves well getting off ot a blistering 15-5 start good enough for a 3-game lead over the California Angels. Second year first baseman Greg Walker is leading the team with hitting .338 with 9 HR's (tops in AL) and 20 RBI's. Andre Thornton has pitched in with 7 HR's of his own. As a team we're leading the AL in most categories. My pitchers are throwing well with a team ERA of 2.88 (2nd in AL) plus we're first with most strikeouts and least walks in the AL. Closer Tom Gorman leads the AL with 7 saves.

1983 - April Summary
We started out on fire winning our first 8 games before cooling off some to finish the month with a 17-7 record, good enough for a 4 game lead at the end of April. The offense ranks 1 or 2 in all major categories except we’re 12th in accepting walks – we’re getting our hacks!!! The offense is led by Greg Walker (.315, 9 HR’s, 23 RBI’s), Andre Thornton (.333, 7 HR’s, 19 RBI’s), and Paul Molitor (.341, 1 HR, 7 RBI’s) who are all over the Top 5 leaderboard in the AL. The pitching staff is doing wonderful as well with a team ERA of 3.06. I’m most proud of our staff leading the AL in most strikeouts and fewest walks with a ratio of almost 4 to 1! Don Gullet has started strong going 4-1 with a 2.13 ERA in his 5 starts. Also doing well are Bob Hooton (3-1, 3.75) and Floyd Bannister (1-1, 3.51). Rookie Dennis Rasmussen has filled in well with a 2-0 record and a 2.82 ERA in 3 starts since he came up to fill Bruce Kison’s spot in the rotation. Closer Tom Gorman leads the AL with 7 saves.
Here are the standings after the first month of the season. |

1983 - Seattle Contract Negotiations
I just looked and we're going to have to make some decisions on quite a few free agents by the end of this season.
Floyd Bannister, SP, 27 - Current Salary: $294K | Asking 3-year, $1.1M Don Gullet, SP, 32 - Current Salary: $500K | Asking 6-year, $4.2M Burt Hooton, SP, 33 - Current Salary: $380K | Asking 6-year, $4.2M Bruce Kison, SP, 33 - Current Salary: $325K | Asking 4-year, $2.2M Rich Gossage , MR, 31 - Current Salary: $375K | Asking 3-year, $1.2M John Stearns, C, 31 - Current Salary: $300K | Asking 2-year, $420K Andre Thornton, 1B, 33 - Current Salary: $450K | Asking 6-year, $4.8M Paul Molitor, 2B, 26 - Current Salary: $525K | Asking 3-year, $2.1M Bill Buckner, LF, 33 - Current Salary: $500K | Asking 5-year, $3.75M Barry Bonnell, CF, 29 - Current Salary: $120K | Asking 2-year, $380K I'm probably going to make offers to 2 or 3 of the SP's. I just have to figure out which ones. I think I have enough relievers to let Gossage go. On the offensive side, I will be definitely working hard to re-sign Molitor. After that, I'll work to sign Buckner (my favorite Cub as a kid) and likely make offers to Stearns and Bonnell (my super-sub) as they'll come cheap. I think I'm going to let Thornton go via either trade or free agency hoping to get a supplemental draft pick. Last edited by BoilerRocketScientist; 09-04-2013 at 10:51 PM. I know it's kind of off base for your dynasty...sorry. Anyways, I've met Don Gullett he's a great guy...friendly, very afrearable guy.
I was blessed enough to have him (guest) coach the American Leagion I played for in the early 90's. The only knock I could say about him is he's almost too easy to talk to lol. Oh, also I have useless stories about Joel Youngblood, Doug Flynn and John Vukovich. The were the infield coaches I played under. Sadly, Coach Vuk (John Vukovich passed away a few years ago). While none of these guys are Hall of Famers I have a ton of respect for each of them.

Scottiedog, Gullet has been pitching well for me. I'll see if I want to match his money demands. I remember Youngblood, Flynn, & Vuckovich from my days as a kid and probably have baseball cards of each of them. I'll try to remember to see how they've fared in my alternate universe.

I've been meaning to mention me (sort of) knowing Don Gullett after I noticed you signed him as a free agent.
I would love to know how Youngblood, Flynn and Vuk have done. I grew up a Reds fan (still am) so those guys are ones I follow in historical leagues. BTW, I like your dynasty keep it up bro.

Let's see how your guys have done Scottiedog.
Doug Flynn: Doug Flynn played sparingly for Cincinnati through the 1978 season. He spent 1979 with San Francisco's AA squad and then he was a Rule 5 selection by Boston in 1980 where he played 86 games and hit .253. The last two seasons were spent as a minor league free agent with Montreal and back to Cincinnati. This is very different from his real major league experience where he averaged over 100 games with more than 300 AB's from '77 - '84 before retiring after the 1985 season. John Vuckovich: He didn't last long in my alternate universe. My simming began with the 1977 season where Vuckovich only played in 1 game for Philadelphia making 1 plate appearance. He earned a walk. He retired after the 1977 season. In real life Vuckovich played sparingly for the Phillies retiring after the 1981 season. Joel Youngblood: He's bounced around a several times. After spending 1976 in Cincinnati, he ended up in St. Louis where he was traded mid-season to Cleveland. He stayed with the Indians until the trading deadline of 1981 when he was dealt to San Diego for Gene Richards. His best season was with Cleveland in a platoon role when he hit .303 with 20 HR's in only 350 AB's. He's been San Diego's starting right fielder for the last 2 seasons but only hitting at a .237 clip. |

Thanks Rocket for the "Where are they now?"
I guess they would've still been "guest instructors" in your alternate universe too lol.

1983 - Seattle Injury
We'll have to respond to another injury when the news came down that starting right fielder Tim Wallach will be lost for 5-6 weeks with a sprained knee. Wallach had come on strong lately and was hitting .314/.368/.558 with 9 2B's, 4 HR's, & 11 RBI's when he twisted his knee running the bases.
Taking Wallach's place will be our first round selection Dion James. In AAA, James was hitting .353/.429/.447 with 4 2B's, 2 3B's and 5 RBI's in 20 games. |

1983 - More Injury Problems
Well, the injuries keep cropping up for us as we've had 3 players go down with minor injuries over the past 4 days. First, starter Burt Hooton started experiencing some back soreness and will be out for 5 days and will miss his next start. Then, two days later we lost Bill Buckner after he knocked knees with Baltimore's Damaso Garcia sliding into second base with a double and will be out for 5 days. Finally, yesterday designated hitter Andre Thornton twisted an ankle running to first and he'll be out for 2 days. All of these minor injuries aren't worthy of time on the DL but they are seriously straining our bench. The injuries haven't cost us anything as we're in the midst of a 8-game winning streak and have increased our lead to 6.5 games over Kansas City.

1983 - Seattle Trade & SIgning
05/11/1983 - Seattle today announced that they traded outfielder Dave Collins to the San Diego Padres for reliever Joe Edelin. Collins is an original Mariner from the expansion days but has been used sparingly the past 4 seasons. Edelin, in his 3rd year, had a promising rookie campaign earning 42 saves as the Padres closer but has since been moved to a setup role. This season Edelin was 1-2 with a 6.43 ERA in 9 games.
Shortly after acquiring Edelin, the Mariners sent him down to AAA and announce that they had re-signed Richie Zisk to provide some right-handed outfield help to the team. Zisk had spent the past 3 seasons with Seattle and helped them to 2 consecutive World Series titles but wasn't re-signed after the '82 season. Zisk didn't find any takers in the off-season and signed with Seattle for $170K for this season. |

I always liked Davey Collins and Richie Zisk as a kid. Neither were superstars but just played the game hard and the right way.

1983 - Seattle Win Streak Over!
With 1 out and the bases loaded, Tim Flannery sent a line drive into left center that Ruppert Jones tracked down but allowed Mitchell Page to score from 3rd to win the game and end Seattle's 11-game winning streak. Mike Witt (4-2) took the loss despite giving up 2 runs on 5 hits in 8.2 IP. Oakland's Walt Terrell (4-1) earned the win with a complete game giving up only 1 run while scattering 8 hits. This is Seattle's first loss in the month of May and their season record of 28-8 gives them a 7-game lead over the White Sox at this early stage of the season. Seattle's 11-game streak bests their 8-game streak that started the year in April.

1983 - Seattle Signing
08/31/1983 - Seattle announced the re-signing of two offensive cornerstones today. Both Paul Molitor and Bill Buckner will be back with the Mariners next season and beyond. Molitor, the promising 26-year old second baseman, signed a 4-year, $2.78M contract. Meanwhile, Bill Buckner (33) signed a 3-year, $2.1M contract. Buckner announced his decision to stay was based on loyalty, hinting that he feels he could've made more on the open market. Regardless, Mariners fans are thrilled with the signings and hope the front office keeps some of the starting staff as well. General Manager Wood Tobias told reporters that talks are in progress and they'd be the first to know when something happens.

1983 - May Summary
The month of May started off with a bang as we rattled off 11 straight wins. After that, we limped through the month with a pedestrian 6-9 record. Nevertheless, we ended the month with a 6-game lead over the Texas Rangers. The offense still ranks in the top 4 in all categories except for walks and stolen bases. Paul Molitor, the recipient of a new 4-year contract, led the team with a .341 average this month while Greg Walker (1B) led the way with 9 HR’s and 23 RBI’s. The pitching staff is also at the top of the AL, leading the league in team ERA (3.15), runs allowed, strikeouts, and batting average (.237). Leading the way was starter Mike Witt who posted a 4-1, 1.13 mark in his 5 May starts. Don Gullet (3-1, 2.97) added to his league leading 7 wins while the bottom of the rotation (Bannister, Hooton, & Rasmussen) struggled, going 5-6 with a 4.90 ERA. Reliever Enrique Romo (2-0, 0.82, 8 appearances) and closer Tom Gorman (0-0, 7 saves, 1.35, 8 appearances) led a strong bullpen.
Here's the standings at the end of May. |

1983 - Injuries & Struggles
The injuries keep piling up as John Stearns pulled a quadricep muscle legging out a double and will be lost for 5 weeks. At the time of his injury Stearns was batting .240/.290/.295 with 1 HR and 19 RBI's in 46 games.
He's the latest injury to a struggling team as we've lost 3 straight and 9 out of our last 11 games. Regardless, we're still holding on to a 5.5 game lead over the White Sox. |

1983 - Seattle Struggles Continue
June is turning into a month of horrors for Seattle. The month started with a 7-game losing streak which was part of a larger 2-13 stint. We quickly won 3 straight games then lost 3 straight and had our strong 8-game lead dwindle to 1.5 games.
Horrible performances are lead by starter Don Gullet who's 0-1 in his last 3 starts but has only managed 11 innings in those 3 starts while posting a 11.45 ERA. Meanwhile, closer Tom Gorman has blown saves and earned the loss in the last 2 games. In his last 4 appearances, he's given up 5 runs on 10 hits in only 1.2 innings - putrid! |
