May 1961 Recap
North Division
Just a game separates the three top teams, with Connecticut sitting alone in first on 32-24. New Jersey and Boston’s strong home form has helped them keep pace with the Colonials and New York put together a couple of strong late wins to give them some momentum heading into June. West Division A real turnaround for Portland with their 20-9 month leapfrogging them into first place, 3 games clear of both Los Angeles and Las Vegas, who continue to be almost inseparable. Poor old Seattle is having a hell of a time of it, with their run differential having blown out to a nasty -106. They are now 10 adrift of the Canaries and Lizards and already look no hope of being competitive this season. South Division Florida is in the same boat as Washington—a league-best 33-23 record but a run diff of just +6, which compares poorly to both Carolina (+39) and Kansas City (+42), who are tied for second place just 2 games in arrears. New Orleans – 8 GB at 25-31 – are finding it tough going and will need to get things moving in the right direction if they want to avoid being dropped off by the other three. East Division Washington still leads, but now by only 4 games, and this division has really tightened up of late with the last placed Arrows only trailing the Grays by 7. Washington’s -17 run differential despite their 30-26 record indicates they are winning by small amounts and losing big, which is a real concern. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Virginia atop this division same time next month. They are 8-2 for their last 10 and have started playing some really good baseball, as their 19-10 May after that horror 6-21 April attests.

Game of the Week – Sunday, June 4 1961
Connecticut Colonials (33-26) @ New Jersey Stallions (34-25)
Comcast Field – Jersey City, NJ; 1.05 pm NJER: Ed Walsh (7-1, 3.51) CONN: Urban Shocker (5-6, 4.74) Hello again and thanks for tuning in to today’s Game of the Week, I’m Nik Hill and today we are bringing you two sides who look like they’ll be right amongst it at the pointy end in the North Division, the New Jersey Stallions and the Connecticut Colonials. An extremely tight race in the North at the moment, with just the solitary game separating the Stallions from both Boston and their opponents this afternoon, so there is plenty on the line in this one. The home side has been in great form of late with 8 wins from their past 10, and will be incredibly hard to beat here at Comcast, where their record so far is a crisp 24-9. The Colonials, on the other hand, have just come off the boil a bit in recent weeks, and will be looking to turn that around and avoid being swept in this series. Ed Walsh is on the mound for the Stallions today, and he has been among the league’s best hurlers so far with a 7-1 record and a nice ERA of 3.51. He’s the sort of pitcher who doesn’t look like much from afar, but he’s got a plus screwball that sets up his other pitches really well. The Colonials have got Urban Shocker going for them, a real nibbler who doesn’t give you much to hit but who can get into trouble if his radar is off and he has to come back in to the main part of the plate. Which version of him are we going to see tonight? Future superstars everywhere you look in this league, although with this young man you can probably remove the word “future”, he seems to have arrived at this league as a full-formed ballplayer, doesn’t he Jules? Juliana Scott: He certainly does, Nik, I’m talking to George Sisler, the Stallions’ first-baseman. George, thanks for giving us your time. A first-baseman now but it wasn’t always so—you began your career as a pitcher at the University of Michigan and only transitioned into a position player while you were in the minors. Why the change? George Sisler: Well it became pretty obvious as I worked my way up the ranks that I didn’t really have the arm to take me very far. But I’d always hit OK so my skipper started playing me at first on my off-days until it just seemed a better fit for me and the team. JS: Any chance of you taking the mound in this league? GS: No thank you, ma’am – not with the guys I’d have to pitch to (laughs). JS: Yes, that’s true. There sure are plenty of tough outs here. How would you pitch to yourself if ever given the chance? GS: I’m gonna plead the fifth on that one, Juliana, the pitchers are already tough enough to get hits off without me giving them the inside running (laughs). I’d put myself out of a job if I did. JS: Well we don’t want that. This is a really strong squad the Stallions have got and you’ve started the season well. Can you give us some insights into how a group of players that barely know one another can gel so quickly in the way yours seems to have? GS: Two words: Dustin Pedroia. On his urging, we sat down as a group – no coaching staff were present – on the first day of camp back in January and just shot the breeze for a couple hours. This became a nightly thing after our field drills were done for the day. When camp broke a month or so later, we were as thick as thieves. And he’s always going around making sure everyone’s doing OK, talking guys up if they’re in a bit of a slump, putting out the fires that inevitably spark up. Dusty would be the first to admit he’s not as talented as most of the other lads in this league, but if I was putting a team together from scratch he’d be one of the first guys I’d pick, it’s that simple. He is the heart and soul of this side, and goes out there and leads by example, hustling every play no matter the situation or score. JS: Wow, that’s some lofty praise indeed. Tell us about Cristobal Torriente, he looks a fantastic talent. GS: Oh, yeah, he’s one right out of the box all right. We call him Ese, which is apparently Spanish for “buddy” but also means SA - Silent Assassin. He’s pretty shy our Cristo and struggles a bit with the language, but he just gets it done over and over again with a minimum of fuss. The perfect number 3 hitter, hard contact to all fields with plenty of pop, a great eye and fantastic game smarts, you know? He’ll assess any situation in a flash and invariably make the right play at the right time. JS: And George, just before I let you go, tell us about playing under Wilbert Robinson. GS: Sometimes a really good ballclub can be spoiled by having the wrong type of manager. Some groups need handling, need constant fine-tuning—micromanaging I think they call it. If we had a manager like that I reckon we’d run into problems along the way. We’ve got a pretty driven group of guys at this club and Uncle Robbie is the perfect skipper for us. First and foremost he trusts us and never lets us forget it. So if you make a mistake or don’t get something done he’ll just let it pass or gently remind you what was needed of you in that situation, always with a real casual tone and positive spin, you know? The closest to harsh words you’ll get from him is come on son, you know you’re better than that or something along those lines. His background as a player means he understands that the nature of this game contains a lot of failure, so he makes sure you’re always looking to succeed. Every play. Every pitch. Every at-bat. JS: It certainly seems to be working so far. Good luck tonight George and thanks for talking to us. GS: My pleasure, thanks for having me. JS: Undoubtedly one of the premier ballclubs in this league, Nik, and I couldn't agree more with your statement that the Stallions will be right in the thick of things come playoff time. Indeed Jules, they just don’t seem to have any obvious weak spots. Thanks for that, and folks we’ll be right back with tonight’s first pitch. TOP 1ST A strong start by the visitors as Henderson leads off with a walk, swipes second and moves around to third on a Crawford groundout. Williams hits a dribbler back to the pitcher, who throws it over to first for what should be a routine second out, only for Sisler to flat out drop it, scoring Henderson. Larkin then singles and another one by Schang knocks Williams in. Connecticut 2, New Jersey 0 BOTTOM 1ST A hit to Sisler but nothing doing for the Stallions. TOP 2ND Just one hit for Connecticut. BOTTOM 2ND The home side gets one back when Pedroia walks and advances to third on a single by Porter, then comes home on a Kaline SF. Connecticut 2, New Jersey 1 TOP 3RD Walsh disposes of them in order. BOTTOM 3RD The home side gets into motion again, with Sisler sparking the rally with a leadoff single. Torriente also singles and they are both in scoring position when Cano comes to the plate with two out. Cano duly singles them both in as New Jersey takes the lead. New Jersey 3, Connecticut 2 TOP 4TH The Colonials waste no time in responding, as McPhee triples and scores on a single by Darrell Evans to tie it at 3. New Jersey 3, Connecticut 3 BOTTOM 4TH Shocker gets his first 1-2-3 inning of the game. TOP 5TH Just another hit by Schang. BOTTOM 5TH Shocker looks to have found his groove with another clean inning. TOP 6TH No dramas for Walsh. BOTTOM 6TH Once again Shocker sends them down in order. TOP 7TH Another three-up, three-down frame for Walsh. BOTTOM 7TH Shocker retires the two men he faces but Colonials manager Connie Mack opts to go to the pen, with Cicotte called into action. He finishes off the inning without incident. TOP 8TH Nothing doing for the Colonials. BOTTOM 8TH Cicotte gets two away without any problems but then serves up a gopher ball to Frank Robinson to put the home side back on top. That seems to throw him as the Stallions get two singles, then he misplays a come-backer to load the bases. A Kaline single plates two of the runners as New Jersey pinches a break within the shadows of the winning post. New Jersey 6, Connecticut 3 TOP 9TH A solo shot by Bob Johnson with one out gives Connecticut a sniff and ends Walsh’s game as Uncle Robbie summons Jim McCormick from the bullpen. He concedes a single to Henderson, the first hitter he faces, but he’s retired on a fielder’s choice by Freeman. Sam Crawford then grounds out to second to end the game and give New Jersey the win and series sweep. BOTTOM 9TH X New Jersey 6, Connecticut 4 (final). WP: Ed Walsh (8-1) LP: Eddie Cicotte (4-4) SV: Jim McCormick (5) POTG: Ed Walsh 8.1 IP / 8 H / 4 ER / 5 K. Not much to say with that game, really, the Stallions just timed their run perfectly to get home in a tight one. Walsh did what was required of him, namely keeping the Colonials’ big names quiet for the most part, with Freeman, Crawford and Williams a combined 0-for-13. And the Stallions hitters’ were better in the clutch, which in the end proved the difference between two pretty evenly-matched teams. Another real treat in store next Sunday when we head to Vegas, baby, to see the Lizards take on Portland and, if you aren’t already familiar with Omnibus Park, then get ready for a baseball stadium like you’ve never seen before. Thanks again for tuning in, see you next week! Apologies, no lineups screenshot because genius boy forgot to take one...

Game of the Week – Sunday, June 11 1961
Portland Stags (36-29) @ Las Vegas Lizards (31-34)
Omnibus Park – Las Vegas, NV; 1.05 pm LASV: Mark Langston (8-4, 4.93) PORT: Jim Palmer (4-6, 3.82) Good Afternoon and thanks for tuning in to PBLTV’s Game of the Week, I’m your host Nik Hill. You are in for a real treat tonight as the Portland Stags – arguably the hottest team in the league in recent weeks – take on the Las Vegas Lizards, and if you haven’t seen it before then welcome to Omnibus Park, which it’s safe to say is a ballpark like no other and very much in keeping with the locale in which it is situated. As I mentioned, the Stags have been red hot of late, putting together a 20-9 May that has seen them pull 5 games clear in the West division. Contributors from top to bottom in this lineup and a pretty solid pitching staff makes them an extremely difficult opponent indeed. That said, Las Vegas had no trouble unpicking them yesterday in a 17-4 rout, with second-baseman Rod Carew and catcher Ted Simmons in particular having big games as “Big Cat” Harry Brecheen went the distance for a complete game victory. Tricky Lizards southpaw Mark Langston will be hoping for a similar outcome here today, as he faces righty Jim Palmer in what shapes as a real humdinger. Both have had reasonable starts to the season and have deep pitch arrays to call upon, so I’m not expecting tonday to be another slugfest. Unfortunately our friend Juliana Scott is ill tonight, so rather than a live cross we’re going to have to make do with a quick chat I had about an hour ago with Las Vegas skipper Leo "the Lip" Durocher. Nik Hill: Leo thanks for taking the time to talk with us, your boys put together their first really dominant performance yesterday, but it has been a bit of a struggle for the club so far. What’s your take on the season to this point? Leo Durocher: We just haven’t been good enough for the most part, plain and simple. NH: Where in particular do you think you’ve let yourselves down? LD: Across the board. We haven’t been terrible by any stretch, but I’m not really close to happy with any aspect of our game so far. NH: Is that just a function of the squad being so raw and inexperienced, or is there something more to it? LD: That fact certainly plays its part, and we’re OK with that. But all the players and clubs are in the same boat, so it’s no excuse. NH: Plenty of positives as well, though. Burkett has been great. Bonds has shown plus-power that looks like it has plenty of blue sky, the pitching has been solid enough on the whole. LD: Agreed. It’s certainly not panic stations or anything, but we’re going to need to start stringing some good results together or this Portland team is going to run away with it. NH: Langston on the mound for you tonight, what will your instructions to him be? LD: Mark and I had a good talk in the team rooms just a little while ago and he seems up for a big challenge today. I try not to get in my pitcher’s head so close to game time, they know what they need to do and I’d only go confusing matters if I did. Mark’s been a bit unlucky in a couple of his recent starts, but I think he’s on the right track. He just needs to trust his pitches and let the rest fall into place. NH: I really like the look of Martin Dihigo, can you tell us a bit more about him? LD: One of the most naturally-gifted ballplayers I’ve ever seen. Excellent game instincts, a real general out in the field. More pop than it perhaps looks at the moment. I’m not talking home-run pop, more extra-base pop. I expect he’ll lead the league in triples most years while still putting a few in the seats. An absolute gun. NH: It certainly looks that way. Righto Leo, I’ll let you go—good luck tonight and until we see you again. LD: Thanks Nik. Very much short and to the point is Leo, but he seems to have a quiet confidence about his group once they get a few more games under their belts. It certainly is yet another talented squad like so many others in this league. OK, a quick word from the people who pay my salary and we’ll be back with the first pitch. TOP 1ST Just a single by Magee for the visitors. BOTTOM 1ST Palmer begins confidently with a clean inning. TOP 2ND Another two-out hit for Portland, this time to Paul Waner, but nothing comes of it. BOTTOM 2ND Singles to Bonds and Dihigo put them at the points with none out, and another one to Brouthers opens the scoring. Palmer regroups and does well to keep it at that. Las Vegas 1, Portland 0 TOP 3RD A 1-2-3 inning for Langston, who has 5 strikeouts over the first 3. BOTTOM 3RD A Carew single is all for the Lizards. TOP 4TH Langston with no problems, now having retired 7 in a row. BOTTOM 4TH The hosts add to their lead, as Dihigo doubles with one out and eventually scores on a Sosa groundout. Las Vegas 2, Portland 0 TOP 5TH 10 down in a row now for Langston, with 8 Ks. BOTTOM 5TH A couple of baserunners for Las Vegas but they can’t convert. TOP 6TH Langston shrugs off an error at 3B by Ripken and a wild pitch to keep his clean sheet intact. BOTTOM 6TH Dihigo gets his third hit of the game but is stranded at third. TOP 7TH Another poor misplay by Ripken puts Mantle aboard with no outs and a walk to Munson ramps up the pressure. Bell moves them around with a groundout and Jimmy Collins comes into the game with immediate impact, doubling both runners in to tie the game at 2. That’s it for Langston, who understandably glares at Ripken as he trudges off, but the introduction of Bobby Mathews doesn’t help as Jim Whitney puts the Stags in front for the first time with an RBI single, then Rogers Hornsby makes it 4-2 with a run-scoring double. A Campaneris triple plates him to stretch Portland’s lead to 3. Portland 5, Las Vegas 2 BOTTOM 7TH The Lizards look shell-shocked and go down in order. TOP 8TH A hit but that’s all for Portland. BOTTOM 8TH Now it’s Palmer who’s looking strong as he sends them three-up, three-down. TOP 9TH Not sure why Durocher leaves him in, as Mathews gets hammered again and the Stags add 2 to their lead. Walker Buehler is eventually summoned from the pen but the game is well and truly lost by this point. Portland 7, Las Vegas 2 BOTTOM 9TH The Lizards get a couple of men aboard but a Dickey GIDP ends the game. Portland 7, Las Vegas 2 (final). WP: Jim Palmer (5-6) LP: Mark Langston (8-5) POTG: Jim Palmer 9 IP / 9 H / 2 ER / 5 K. A bit of a strange one that, the home side looked to be cruising but some poor fielding and – I have to say it – questionable managerial decisions led to the game completely flipping on its head and the Stags have ended up winning it comfortably. Palmer was rock solid despite an early wobble and the Stags’ hitters got timely hits when they were needed. Langston can consider himself most unlucky here as he gave up just 3 hits over 6+ and struck out 9. A bit of a break for us as there are no Sunday games scheduled the next two weeks. So we’ll be back on July 2nd when we’ll be heading to the nation’s Capital to watch the Grays take on the Virginia Fury. The East Division has really tightened up so that should be a fantastic contest. Thanks for watching, hope to see you again then.
