The 1913 World Series: Detroit Tigers vs. St. Louis Cardinals
Results Game 1, October 8th, 1913, Navin Field Cardinals Edge Tigers 4-3 to Open WS When the games really matter, the St. Louis Cardinals put on their best show, beating the Detroit Tigers by a final score of 4-3 today. Walter Johnson threw 12.0 innings of 10-hit ball. St. Louis now leads Detroit 1-0 in the best-of-7 affair. Johnson, the St. Louis right-hander, went 12 innings, allowing 3 runs on 10 hits. He collected 4 strikeouts. "There's nothing like the postseason," said Johnson, "to ramp up the pressure." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Navin Field in Detroit. Cardinals lead 1-0 Game 2, October 9th, 1913, Navin Field Raucous Navin Field Crowd Propels Tigers to 4-1 Victory; Series Tied at 1 Behind a bravura effort from starter Harry Suter, the Detroit Tigers topped the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 4-1 today and got their first win in the 1913 World Series. Suter threw 8.2 innings of 4-hit ball for the Tigers. The win moves Detroit into a 1-1 tie with St. Louis. The Cardinals had few good swings against Suter, the left-hander, who threw 101 pitches over 8.2 innings. He allowed just 1 run on 4 hits. "It feels a lot better to be tied than to be behind, even if it is only one game," Detroit manager Ned Hanlon said. Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at Robison Field in St. Louis. Series tied at 1-1 Game 3, October 11th, 1913, Robison Field St. Louis Wins at Home to Take 2-1 Lead in WS Riding the 4-hit performance of left fielder Beals Becker, the St. Louis Cardinals stopped the visiting Detroit Tigers, 12-4, in Game 3 of the World Series today. Becker was 4 for 5 with 4 singles. He drove in 2 runs for the Cardinals, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 1. In the bottom of the fifth, with St. Louis leading 6-0, pitcher Ray Keating hit a bases-clearing double. The hit came off Hub Perdue and put the Cardinals ahead, 9-0. "We're happy," Becker told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Robison Field in St. Louis. Cardinals lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 12th, 1913, Robison Field Detroit Win to Pull Even With St. Louis The Detroit Tigers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-3 in Game 4 of the World Series today. Making an impact was left fielder Zack Wheat, who was 3-5 with 3 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. The win moves Detroit into a 2-2 tie with St. Louis in the series. The game turned with two out in the top of the fifth when Wheat, who finished 3rd in the AL in RBIs with 99 last year, hit a run-scoring single. It propelled the Tigers into the lead, 2-1. "We're one game closer to our goal," Detroit manager Ned Hanlon said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Robison Field in St. Louis. Series tied 2-2 Game 5, October 13th, 1913, Robison Field Pivotal Game 5 Goes to Host Cardinals, 6-1 Game 5 was big. So was George Winter. In leading St. Louis to a crucial 6-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers at Robison Field today, the St. Louis starter rose to the occasion, tossing 9 good innings. Winter threw 9.0 innings of 6-hit ball as the Cardinals defended their home field to seize a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 World Series. Winter gave St. Louis a solid start. The right-hander allowed 1 run on 6 hits over 9 innings. "Things broke our way today and that's great," Cardinals manager Mauricio Martinez said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet." Game 6 is scheduled for Wednesday at Navin Field in Detroit. Cardinals lead series 3-2 Game 6, October 15th, 1913, Navin Field Tigers Even With Cardinals After Home Win The Detroit Tigers and the St. Louis Cardinals will take the World Series to a decisive 7th game. In a must-win situation today, the Tigers beat the Cardinals 3-1 at Navin Field to force the series into what will essentially be a one-game playoff. Detroit right-hander Hub Perdue had a big role in the win. He threw 8.0 innings of 4-hit ball. Perdue was in the zone all game. He frustrated St. Louis hitters while giving the Tigers 8 innings of quality work. Perdue threw 122 pitches, allowing 4 hits and getting 4 punchouts. "We lost," St. Louis manager Mauricio Martinez said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Navin Field in Detroit. Series tied 3-3 Game 7, October 16th, 1913, Navin Field Cardinals Triumph in 1913 World Series The St. Louis Cardinals pulled out all the stops tonight, winning the World Series in a hard-fought series with the Detroit Tigers. It was a seesaw affair, but with a 4-1 victory at Navin Field, St. Louis lay claim to the franchise's 3rd championship. "There's no denying we faced a tough opponent," said Joe Jackson. "But as the old saying goes, 'when the going gets tough, the tough get going,' and that's what we did today." The champs finished the regular season 94-60 and claimed first place in the NL. A victory parade is set to be scheduled in St. Louis in the days to come. Cardinals win series 4-3 Series MVP: Joe Jackson (Hey, at least in this redo, he has a much better shot of being in the baseball Hall of Fame than IRL--having 3 World Series wins, 4 straight World Series appearances (so far), and a Series MVP instead of being with the Black Sox should count for something, shouldn't it? Also, I did not see the Cardinals dynasty coming, IMO...) |

The Detroit first baseman delivered a bases-clearing triple in the top of the ninth inning to put the Tigers on top, 5-2. It was his only hit in the game, but he made it count. In the top of the first, Zack Wheat pounced on a curveball from Walter Johnson and hit a run-scoring triple. It gave Detroit a quick 1-0 lead. "But it was good hard work and a lot of fun along the way." The Tigers were all business this year, with their eyes fixed squarely on the goal of winning the team's 2nd championship. The champs finished the regular season 88-66 and claimed first place in the AL. "We had our doubters along the way," series MVP Chick Gandil said with a smile. "But we made them eat crow today."
