But when the White Sox shifted their AAA affiliate back to Iowa for 1976, the understandable de-Denver-ization of the players' batting stats was enough to sour the Sox on Manny, and a month into 1977, they sold him to the Padres, who gave him a half-season in Hawai'i before they let him drift down to Tabasco in the Mexican League.

However, the fledgling Mariners needed depth, and so Manny spent four more seasons at AAA mostly, before going into coaching.

In my game, Manny had a nice spring, and I preferred him over Mario Mendoza (sent down) and the veterans Ed Crosby and Jack Heidemann, who were swapped for pitching depth. Keep it saucy, Tabasco Kid!

When the Tigers acquired Gipson-Long in exchange for Michael Fulmer at last year’s trade deadline, most fans didn’t bat an eye. Gipson-Long was never the kid who grew up decked out in Perfect Game attire and attending all the biggest showcase tournaments. He wasn’t a hyped draftee or a minor leaguer who appeared on top prospect rankings. What he did do was keep improving.

This season, Gipson-Long posted a 3.74 ERA in Double-A Erie. He earned a promotion to Toledo, where he had a 5.45 ERA but also impressed with 13 K/9 in eight outings. He added a sinker and cutter to his arsenal and tweaked his changeup grip. “This is a great organizational win,” Hinch said. “We think he had some untapped potential. We make him better. He buys in. He’s changed a little bit of everything from his attack plan to some of his pitch shapes. To see him go out and really earn his way here, it’s exactly the story we love to share.”

He definitely smiles a lot in photos. I took out the crease lines and wholly eliminated the smile the first time, but he looked too generic. Redid him tonight and am going to stick with this one.

With Bill Plummer's best days behind him, the Reds have decided to have Bench backed up by Tommy Mutz. This is obviously a good idea, not only because of the great name, but because Tommy had an OPS over .800 at AAA Indianapolis last year.



IRL, the Reds sent Tommy back to Indianapolis for a third season, and he was eventually pushed out of the catching queue by Don Werner, who is on the right side of the second picture.

There are also a truckload of B&W action shots of Tommy as a 1980 Denver Bear, courtesy of Getty Images having custody of the Denver Post archive, but I didn't see anything resembling a good shot of his face. Nutz to that!

It should ship with the game in the patch early next week as he's now covered by the MLBPA license. I made it after the Padres opened their season a few days after the CUF pack posted. So, he's in the CUF pack that will post at the end of the month, but everyone that downloads the patch will get him sooner. But here it is below, a few days in advance.

I just got the license yesterday so everyone that hasn't been able to ship with the game yet (awaiting formal clearance) should also join him in that patch.
