December 2036 – Offseason

International Amateurs

We just completed our monthly private practice with many young international amateur free agents who we hope can aid our club in the coming years. It was great to meet the players in-person and get to know them better, and I was able to improve my scouting assessment on all invitees.

In fact some of the players impressed me, since they showcased a higher potential than I had previously expected from them:

Andres Madrigal, 17 year-old LF out of Dominican Republic
Lean and athletic, Andres Madrigal hails from San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic. He has the potential to be a .310 hitter. He generates excellent raw power with his bat speed. He should be good at knowing when to swing and when not to swing. If Madrigal fulfills his potential, he could make multiple trips to the All-Star Game.

Julio Cuevas, 16 year-old CF out of Dominican Republic
Julio Cuevas is a long, lean athletic center fielder who was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He can put on a show in batting practice, and as he develops he has the power potential to impact the game. He may not compete for batting titles, but still projects to hit for a .290 batting average. His eye grades out as average and could draw 50 walks each year. Cuevas is a center fielder with plenty of tools and a lot of upside. He has potential to be a first division starter.

It was a great practice and none of the invitees disappointed in showcasing their talent.

And other players that I was able to further assess were:
David Dettori, 16 year-old LHP out of Venezuela
Jorge Masias, 16 year-old RHP out of Dominican Republic
Mauricio Paniagua, 17 year-old SS out of Dominican Republic
David Patino, 17 year-old RF out of Venezuela
Juan Ponces, 17 year-old CF out of Venezuela
Juan Anaya, 17 year-old RHP out of Dominican Republic
Alvaro Esparza, 17 year-old LF out of Venezuela
Luis Rivera, 16 year-old SS out of Dominican Republic

Rule 5 Draft

Wednesday, December 17th , 2036
RP Robby Denton was designated for assignment and placed on waivers.
Placed RP David Vela on the secondary (40-man) roster.
Saturday, December 20th , 2036
1B Rogelio Camacho was designated for assignment and placed on waivers.
Sunday, December 21st , 2036
Traded 31-year old RHP Cade Townsend, 28-year old minor league RF Luis Castro, and $20,000,000 in cash to the Milwaukee Brewers, getting 21-year old minor league SS Saul Chaparro in return.
Wednesday, December 24th , 2036
Traded 22-year old minor league RHP Yeiner Kistner and 22-year old minor league RHP Ed Boyer to the Detroit Tigers, getting 19-year old minor league CF Dave Pichler, 17-year old minor league RHP David Padilla, and $20,000,000 in cash in return.
Traded 26-year old SS Ed Nicholson to the New York Mets, getting 17-year old minor league 3B Edgar Chapa and $1,000,000 in cash in return.
Placed RP Gebre-Mariam Ufanisi on the secondary (40-man) roster.
Placed CL Eli Cavanagh on the secondary (40-man) roster.
Lost SP Jonathon Cote in the Rule 5 Draft to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Lost 2B Luis Morga in the Rule 5 Draft to the Boston Red Sox.

There were several moves moved by the Royals as the Rule 5 Draft approached. Rogelio Camacho (unable to move beyond 40 Contact) and Robby Denton (losing movement and control with every month of his long term injury) were both designated for assignment while a couple of relievers in Yeiner Kistner (2032 12th Round) and Ed Boyer (2036 Trade SEA) were traded for a lottery ticket prospect from the Tigers, along with $20m in cash.

That cash offset the money the Royals had paid to the Brewers to take Cade Townsend, along with Luis Castro, the return being an elite defensive SS, who has the potential for plus power and above average contact.

The final trade saw SS Ed Nicholson (2029 Trade LAD) sent to the Mets in return for potential plus power, plus-plus contact 3B Edgar Chapa.

On the day of the trade, the Blue Jays pick up Jonathon Cote (2034 Trade DET) while the Red Sox take Luis Morga (2030 Trade HOU). Cote is the bigger loss for the Royals.

Trades & Free Agents

Saturday, December 20th , 2036
Signed free agent SP Min-ho Kim to a 7-year contract worth a total of $189,000,000.

The first major Free Agent signing of Stewart’s tenure as Korean legend Min-ho Kim comes to Kansas City. A four-pitch groundball pitcher that includes an 80-curveball, Kim has plus stuff and control with above average movement that could max out at plus according to KC scouts. Kim’s arrival was the trigger for Townsend moving on with a rotation crunch.

January 2037 – Offseason

Finance

Owner Sherman confirms no changes to the budget for the year at $234m.

Juan Ponces, 17 year-old CF out of Venezuela
Lean and athletic, Juan Ponces hails from Caracas, Venezuela. He projects to be a .310 hitter. He is a young player with above average power potential. He projects to be solid at working the count. Scouts project Ponces to fill a key role for a contending team in the big leagues.

Andres Madrigal, 17 year-old LF out of Dominican Republic
Lean and athletic, Andres Madrigal hails from San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic. He has solid contact potential, and projects to be a .310 hitter. With good contact, he has the potential to be a middle-of-the-order force. He should do a good job of working the count. Madrigal has a high ceiling and projects well on the field and at the plate.

However, a few invitees left me disappointed as they did not appear to match my previous assessment, although they may still end up being future stars:

Jorge Masias, 16 year-old RHP out of Dominican Republic
Jorge Masias is a lanky and long-armed right-hander who was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. If he develops an off the charts curveball and a good fastball to their potential, he'll have two dominant offerings. His strike throwing ability and movement of his pitches will limit the long ball and he has the stuff to generate swings and misses. Masias projects to provide consistently reliable middle relief.

Julio Cuevas, 16 year-old CF out of Dominican Republic
Julio Cuevas is a wiry framed center fielder who was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He has plus raw power potential and has the chance to be a run producer. He may not compete for batting titles, but still projects to hit for a .290 batting average. He should have average strike zone judgement. It's early and Cuevas is young, but his development prospect as a future center fielder looks extremely promising.

And other players that I was able to further assess were:
Mauricio Paniagua, 17 year-old SS out of Dominican Republic
David Patino, 17 year-old RF out of Venezuela
Luis Rivera, 16 year-old SS out of Dominican Republic
Juan Anaya, 17 year-old RHP out of Dominican Republic
David Dettori, 16 year-old LHP out of Venezuela
Alvaro Esparza, 17 year-old LF out of Venezuela

Following the final training session of the offseason, the Royals signed Andres Madrigal, who impressed scouts each and every month.

Minor League News

Bryant Rumbolt (2037 MiL FA) has a lot going for him. The Northwest Arkansas left fielder just broke into the majors this year and now the Texas League has just picked him as its top hitter for April.

In 18 games last month this outstanding rookie batted .385 with 8 home runs, 26 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

Juan Rivera (2030 Scouting Discovery) was the best pitcher in April according to the voters. He severely shut down opposition batters to win the Texas League Pitcher of the Month Award.

Northwest Arkansas's star reliever compiled a 3-0 mark and an ERA of 0.87 in 20.2 innings with 28 strikeouts and no saves in no save opportunities.

Quad Cities River Bandits fans may just have witnessed a star player blossoming before their eyes in April.

Bob Crimi (2033 14th Round) put up a remarkable month at the age of 22 and has been named the Midwest League Batter of the Month.

For the month, Crimi hit .353 with 11 home runs, 26 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

April's top hurler was Omari Hammie (2033 11th Round) of Columbia. He shackled Carolina League hitters the entire month and claimed the Pitcher of the Month award with a sparkling 3-0 mark.

The 21-year-old Hammie added 27 strikeouts in 20 innings and 9 walks to his season record and compiled a 2.70 ERA. Other clubs hit .233 against him.

Around the League

A sparkling 3-1 mark in April just about says it all. First-year phenom Jonathon Cote of the Toronto Blue Jays put up a strong performance and that's why the American League rated him the Rookie of the Month.

He stood out by holding opposing clubs to a .223 batting average and compiling a 4.15 ERA. Cote struck out 24 and walked 12 in 26 innings.

Minor League News

The #1 pitcher this past month in the Texas League was Chris Rice (2037 Trade PIT) of the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. He worked the hitters over real good, finishing May with a superb 5-0 record and a 1.42 ERA.

The Naturals star made 5 starts and surrendered 21 hits in 38 innings. He struck out 42 and walked 10.

Checking out his stats for the season, Rice has notched 8 wins and no losses in 9 starts. His ERA is 1.74 and he's struck out 76 batters in 62 innings.

For a rookie just breaking in, Bob Crimi (2033 14th Round) certainly put together a successful month. It was good enough to win the MWL Batter of the Month award for May.

The 22-year-old center fielder for the Quad Cities River Bandits hit .389 with 6 home runs, 31 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

This season, Crimi has posted a batting average of .374 with 61 hits in 163 at-bats, 17 home runs and 57 RBIs. He has also scored 45 runs, walked 47 times and compiled a .512 OBP.

It's perhaps an award he'll win many more times through his career, as at age 22 Esteban Medina (2032 International Amateur) has a lot of baseball ahead of him.

But for now the young Columbia Fireflies star can enjoy the numbers he put up in May, which have garnered him the nod as the Carolina League Batter of the Month.

His breakout month featured a .432 average with 9 home runs, 28 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

Looking at his season stats, Medina has compiled a .410 batting average and a .503 on-base percentage, while hitting 13 home runs and driving in 40 runs.

The Royals had two player selected for the All Star Game, reliever Shawn Bass and reigning MVP 2B Edgar Mir. Mir is injured so did not play while Bass was not tabbed to pitch as the National League crushed the American, 9-3.

Despite being only a half game back in the Division, it is clear the Royals bats haven’t lit up the division this season. Expected to be a back up in his final season for the Royals, Bobby Witt Jr. (67 wRC+) has ended up starting 60 games while acquisition Matt Shaw (71 wRC+) is a liability defensively, as is Eric Rose (106 wRC+), with -14.3 range between them although at least Rose offer something with the bat. The trade deadline looks like the time for an infield bat to kick start this group before Juan Moreno and Edgar Mir return.

Min-ho Kim (71 FIP-) and Mike Hoffer (77 FIP-) have contributed 6.1 WAR between them with Curt Bogans (77 FIP-) and Eddie Baquierzo (81 FIP-) a further 5.0. With all-star Shawn Bass (61 FIP-) locking down the closer role, the Royals simply need some solid relief to continue giving themselves a chance with their pitching.

2037 Front Office All Star Break Review

Owner Goals

Team Record:
With a bunch of games left to play, we are in a decent position to make the postseason. That's been our goal all year so keep driving to get it done!

Upgrade a position:
I didn't expect Marquis Foggie would already be a top-6 shortstop by this point. If he can keep it up, I have no doubt this goal will be marked complete at season's end.

Acquire a player:
I asked you at the beginning of the season to improve the team at Hometown player. So far, you haven't made any progress. I hope you'll keep looking. I think a new Hometown player is just what this team needs to turn the corner.

Build your farm:
I would definitely like to see us with a better farm system. I told you that, and I would appreciate some progress towards that. I'm disappointed right now with your effort towards this goal.

Improve your fan interest:
Sometimes I think you're trying to alienate our fans.

Improve your team record:
I was hoping for better results in close games. Please keep working on it.

Tough months from Bobby Witt Jr. (45 wRC+) and Jimmy Goodman (80 wRC+) challenged the Royals although Marquis Foggie (172 wRC+) helped to offset that with a hot bat to go with his above average defense.

Shawn Bass (124 FIP-) had a tough month, giving up 15 hits in 15 innings of work but Min-ho Kim’s (67 FIP-) 60 QS with only 24 hits in 30 innings helped the keep Kansas City competitive.

A challenging month for the Royals ended with two big trades to steady the Royals for the final two months of the season.

Juan Moreno came back from injury but only lasted four days before going back on the IL for five weeks. Chris Wagner returned to the bullpen although a week later Jimmy Lininger was injured pitching and will miss 6 weeks.

Ethan Chafin was called up to start his integration into the major league roster but Kevin Azeem re-injured himself during his injury rehab assignment.

On the last day of the month Matt Shaw was confirmed to be out for 6 weeks and this started a chain for Stewart. His underwhelming performance saw Shaw placed on the sixty day and he the hope is that he will be rehab to end the season. To replace Shaw and guide the Royals until Edgar Mir returns, Kansas City sent 2036 1B international free agent signing Takara Takayama (118 OPS+ in 168 PA) and 2035 international free agent 3B Luis Cuco (Rookie Ball) to the Giants in exchange for 50% of TJ Pompey’s (2026 2nd Round HOU) contract. With plus speed to go with an 80 grade 2B rating his average contact and above average eye should give the Giants a steady lead off man while ensuring the best for their pitchers.

The second trade was to pick up LHP, bullpen arm Jeremy Sidener from the Diamondbacks for 2036 Trade Acquisition SP Steve Pelton. Sidener was the 2035 AL Reliever of the Year and gives the Royals a one-two All Star reliver bunch with Shawn Bass.
