A 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres has assured the Arizona Diamondbacks they will be in the postseason for the third time in four seasons.
The D'backs (89-70) trail the San Francisco Giants by five games in the National League West Division with three games remaining.
Arizona is one game in front of the Milwaukee Brewers for the top seed among the three wild cards.
The D'backs made their only World Series appearance, when they defeated the New York Yankees in seven games.

In the wild-card race, they trail the Arizona Diamondbacks by a game in the chase for the No. 1 seed.
The playoff berth is the team's first since 2026. Their only World Series appearance was way back in 1982, when they lost in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals.

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced they have signed left-handed relief pitcher Seth Romero to a three-year contract extension.
In his first season with the Cardinals, Romero, 32, has pitched in 58 games for St. Louis this season going 4-1 with four saves and a 2.99 ERA.
Romero broke into the majors with the Washington Nationals in 2020 and played five seasons in Washington (2020-25 and 2027) and one with the New York Mets (2027) before signing with St. Louis.
In 232 career games, all but 74 starts, going 37-26 with 30 saves and a 3.63 ERA.
The new contract is worth $1.7 million per season, the 2031 contract features a team option.

The Guardians (87-74) sit in third place in the AL Central Division, some five games behind the Minnesota Twins.
Cleveland will be the No. 3 seed among the wild cards, four games behind the Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals who are tied for the top spot.
The playoff berth is the first since 2026, prior to that the Guardians had made the postseason five consecutive times.
The Guardians last World Series appearance came in 2023, when they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.
