2299 - CBO Playoffs - SCA: Diamond City vs Quincy
#2 Diamond City Swatters (73-35) vs #3 Quincy Gunners (64-44)
Season Series: Diamond City 4, Quincy 4 April 6-7 @DC: DC 7-4, DC 6-2 April 25-26 @Quin: Quin 3-2, DC 7-4 August 15-16 @Quin: Quin 2-1, DC 9-7 August 22-23 @DC: Quin 6-2, Quin 4-3 Diamond City Home Page Quincy Home Page Game 1 Matchup Analysis Diamond City took its 2298 success and turned it up a notch, remaining near the top in the standings and Power Rankings throughout the season. Though Quincy had a better August, including winning 3 of 4 from Diamond City in the month, the Swatters were one of the most consistent teams throughout the season, never having a losing month with a near consistent two wins for every three games played. Their longest losing streak all season was four, including being swept by league rival Oberland before coming back the next week and sweeping the T-51s. It may not appear that way looking at the offensive stats (5th in the SCA in runs scored with 591), but the Swatters offense was a strong squad in an association with many tough squads. The team revolves around RF Wayne Lacy (.307/27/85) who may not even be the team MVP in 2299. That award appears to go to almost assured Red Rocket Rookie Award winner 1B Oren Gep (.297/25/102). Four other players on offense are dangerous: CF Witcher Craft (.319/2/30), 3B Allen Bishop (.363/16/72), SS Wally Warwick (.337/15/71), and LF Tyler Ross (.307/23/67). The pitching was the true strength for Diamond City, finishing 2nd in runs allowed (439), 1st in Starters ERA (3.69), and 2nd in Bullpen ERA (3.36). The first two starters, X10-44 Mannson (12-6, 3.50) and Tim Fusion (11-5, 2.84), are tough to score on. The third starter, Blaine Phrasemaker (9-14, 4.71), may be the one chink in the Swatters' power armor. Closer Josh Samm (37 SV, 1.12) is the best in the business, and regular starter Tyler Powers (15-4, 3.53) will probably move to the bullpen, though he probably should be starting over Phrasemaker. However, who is to tell Manager Bucky Bachelor what to do with his rotation? Quincy may be a stronger opponent than the Swatters would like to see. In fact, if it were not for being curb-stomped by Goodneighbor (2-10 vs them on the season), the Gunners may have been looking to be the #1 seed in the SCA. Quincy was really good on both sides of the ball, finishing 2nd in runs scored (612) and 3rd in runs against (514). On offense, CF Steve Gunkill (.357/14/73) had a strong season to get the Quincy lineup off and running as one of the top leadoff hitters. There is no comeback player of the year award, but if there were, his recovery from a miserable 2298 (.178/2/10) between Jamaica Plain and the Gunners is an impressive one. The team star is 3B Ben Pettinato (.328/24/72) and Quincy has a rare good-hitting catcher in Stuart Costantino (.336/9/81). LF Bryan Benton also quietly stepped up his game in 2299 with a .325/18/78 line. The rest of the lineup was consistently good with RF Baywatch Fischler (.264/6/43) having the lowest batting average, not a bad average at all. The pitching is led by ace Manny McDuff (17-5, 2.99) who had a stellar 2299 season, his first winning season of his career. The next two pitchers were not as sharp but can still win games: Joey Dimes (11-13, 4.96) and Ray Human (10-6, 4.86). CL Wick Prater (28 SV, 1.97) had an outstanding season, with a record 35-straight saves converted going back to 2298, giving Quincy a chance to cut down any team with a late lead. Prediction This will be a tough one, so we are going to stick with consistency and predict the Swatters to edge the Gunners, 3 games to 2.

I actually think the Swatters are being a bit undersold there, but I may be biased. Given their trajectory this entire story, it really is the story of an old dog being taught new tricks, so we'll see.

I can admit that I am a bit partial to Diamond City. They are literally the first team I created for this dynasty. Everything revolved around them, so they have to be a good team! With that said, I was looking at Quincy, and this team is really good and really hot (other than a regular-season-ending sweep by Goodneighbor). Goodneighbor has been their kryptonite, but the Gunners could win this series. I will probably start my sim this afternoon after I preview all four matchups, so we shall see. Hopefully, whichever team wins, this one goes 5.

September 2299 - News and Notes - September 5
Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kawolski 5 September 2299 Aquaboys Win Tight Massachusetts Association Glowing Sea League Race Jason Narrows of the Eastlake Aquaboys said it would "mean so much" to the outpost if they could bring home a championship. The club has taken an important first step, clinching the Massachusetts Association Glowing Sea League. "We're all hungry for a winner and for a team fans can get behind. I think we're that team," he said. "It's time to bring a Boston Minor Series to Eastlake." It's the club's 1st division title. "We may not be the most experienced playoff team, but we've got a lot of heart," the closer said.

2299 - CBO Playoffs - NCA: Nordhagen Beach vs The Slog
#1 Nordhagen Beach Party Boys (70-38) vs #4 The Slog Ghouls (59-49)
Season Series: Nordhagen Beach 7, The Slog 5 May 19-21 @Slog: NB 11-2, NB 9-2, Slog 7-5 May 26-28 @NB: NB 4-2,NB 6-1, NB 9-4 July 7-9 @Slog: Slog 7-4, NB 8-0, NB 9-5 August 11-13 @NB: Slog 6-4, Slog 4-3, Slog 3-2 Nordhagen Beach Home Page The Slog Home Page Game 1 Matchup Analysis The Nordhagen Beach Party boys return to the playoffs as the #1 seed in the NCA. Now it's time for them to show that they belong there. Last season, they were swept by the #4-seed Fort Hagen Silver Shroud in the first round of the playoffs. This season, they are the overwhelming favorites over their league rivals, though the teams were pretty even with a 7-5 edge for the Boys. With the #1 offense and defense (585 vs 396 runs), they need to keep doing what they have been doing, and they should be able to be a Sole Survivor Series-bound team. On offense, the big story was the emergence of RF Jonathan Angelou (.314/25/78 in 95 starts). While teammate LF Michael Fogcrawler (.289/31/84) led the NCA in home runs, he did it with 13 more games, meaning that Angelou is likely a 30/90 guy with a full season. 1B Dustin Mart (.266/26/82) completed the power trio. CF Ryan Combs (.358/8/55) is arguably the best leadoff hitter in the CBO, and almost definitely the best in the NCA. This team finds ways to get on base, move baserunners, and score runs in bunches. While no single unit finished as #1 in the NCA, together the pitching staff was formidable, and a midseason trade made the unit one of the best in the CBO. The three postseason starters are good, even though the ace Tommy Beach had some difficulty finding run support in his starts, going 12-10 with a 3.54 ERA. Chet Arthur (13-4, 3.76) and Julian Shed (12-8, 3.33) are also good at keeping runs down for the offense to get leads in early-to-middle parts of games. In the bullpen, fourth started Derek Gist (12-8, 4.44) may get some time. He is joined with domination in MR Sia Abber (8-0, 1.87), SU Night Demon Archaki (18 SV, 2.57), and CL Tom Mannequin (23 SV, 1.82). The Ghouls will have a tough time scoring on this team. The Ghouls are no strangers to the playoffs, making their third trip in four years, along with a Sole Survivor Series win in 2296 over fellow Brotherhood League rivals, the Finch Farm Four Leafs. Last season was their only miss, and that was being beat out in a play-in game by the Easy Town Assaultrons. These guys know what it's like to play in the playoffs and win it all, so the Ghouls can be dangerous. The offense is led by their usual stars, starting with leadoff man, CF Millioncap Go (.333/16/63) who helps to drive the NCA's 2nd-best offense (581 runs). LF Chris Van Benschoten (.301/18/83), 2B C.T. Woodard (.350/13/79), and SS Lernz Tentsleep (.294/22/85) all can provide hits and power. RF Boots Yellowhair (.284/6/40) and 3B Stoop Bugwing (.287/8/41) are not as successful at the plate as they once were, but they are both quite dangerous. Where the offense thrives the pitching sputters, at least for their starters. The Slog was 8th in runs against (538) mostly because they had the 10th-best Starters ERA (5.33), though their Bullpen ERA (2.75) was good as the 2nd-best in the NCA. Bruce Iddings (12-10, 3.76), Dan Dozier (11-8, 3.82), and Bobby Delaune (15-8, 5.51) will all have to pitch well enough to get to the bullpen late in games. There Ryan Radaway (0-0, 1.44) pitched 43.2 innings, allowing only seven earned runs. He could be the future closer, but for now that is Matt Suds (9 SV, 3.34) who took over after the Ghouls traded Tiny Greene (20 SV, 1.20 with The Slog) to Goodneighbor in exchange for Iddings. Prediction Nordhagen Beach may have been a bit complacent towards the end of the season, which nearly cost them the #1 overall seed. They won't be complacent this time and will take the series, 3 to 1.

2299 - CBO Playoffs - NCA: Fort Hagen vs Starlight
#2 Fort Hagen Silver Shroud (69-39) vs #3 Starlight Lady Killers (62-46)
Season Series: Fort Hagen 7, Starlight 5 May 19-21 @FtH: FtH 6-3, Star 5-3, FtH 7-5 Une 9-11 @Star: FtH 7-4, FtH 4-2, Star 11-9 July 7-9 @FtH: Star 5-3, FtH 9-7, Star 1-0 August 11-13 @Star: FtH 5-3, FtH 9-4, Star 3-1 Fort Hagen Home Page Starlight Home Page Game 1 Matchup Analysis While they lead in neither top runs scored (3rd at 574) nor runs allowed (3rd at 427), the Shroud have been a team that gives some teams nightmares. After finishing in 6th place in 2296, Fort Hagen has now made the playoffs for the third straight season, clinching their first Institute League title this year. They also were in the Association Finals last season after upsetting the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys in the first round. The Shroud fell short to Easy Town in the Association Finals, but they entered 2299 hungry. Like Nordhagen Beach, Fort Hagen has a trio of home run hitters, though Manager Mark Andersen approaches that power in a different way than the typical manager. Leafinh home run hitter, LF Andrew Nuka (.329/26/101) bats second in the lineup, followed by 1B Jim Tiller (.374/24/88), the batting average champion in the NCA. The third power guy, RF David Drfitwood (.234/25/57), will often bat seventh in the order because of his poor hitting average compared to other hitters. SS Well Done Dungan (.357/1/53), CF Ben Pawlak (.295/9/61), and 2B Mark Miller (.372/2/52) all keep the wheels turning. The Silver Shroud do sport the NCA's best starting rotation (3.39), which should be even better without a great 4th starter in Matt Hope (12-6, 4.00). That's because the first three starters are superior: Mike Cartrette (15-4, 2.51, 212 K), Derek Green (15-5, 3.25), and Brent Hooker (14-6, 3.80). While the bullpen is only 8th in the NCA in ERA (4.60), the team only needs their starters to do what they do. Curtis Thriceshot (32 SV, 3.12) is the closer, and Radscorpion Johnson (2-2, 3.83) offers some protection in late games. Starlight enters the playoffs for the first time since the initial season when the Lady Killers earned the Institute League wildcard. In 2297, they had an epic collapse that dropped them from a potential #1 seed to missing the playoffs altogether. This season, the Killers showed a killer instinct and made moves to ensure they were in the running for the playoffs. The offense has been one of the better ones in the NCA, finishing 4th in runs scored (571). The four guys at the top of the lineup are the reason: CF Glenn Higinbotham (.315/18/66), 2B Alec Bullets (.326/9/62), 1B Zeldolph Violet (.353/24/84), and RF David Seaweed (.314/16/79). Violet is one of the top contenders for the NCA's Nuka-Hitter Award. On the mound, the Killers were not as productive, finishing 6th in runs allowed (487). The pitching rotation is talented but does not always pitch its best game, something it will need in the playoffs in every game. City Moore (13-11, 4.15), Chris Schneier (9-9, 4.85), and Steve Rocky (14-3, 3.87) will need to pitch every game well to win it all, much less this series. In the bullpen, Larry Undertaker is considered to be one of the best in the business, but he struggled, earning 31 saves but allowing an ERA of 4.84. Prediction Fort Hagen has the talent and the experience of winning a series last season. We lean towards a sweep but will make the safe play of a 3 games to 1 victory over the Lady Killers.
