MBL news: Oct. 21 -- World Series Game 3 -- Indianapolis 9, St. Louis 3, Indianapolis leads 3-1

Down 3-1, Indianapolis exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and rode it to a 9-3 win over St. Louis in Game 3 of the World Series at the Astrodome (1995).
Back-to-back homers in the top of the fourth inning for St. Louis -- a two-run homer from Mark Waterson followed by a solo shot by Marcos Francis off Racers starting pitcher Matt Loest -- had given the River Walkers a 3-0 lead.
But they could not hold it.
Ozzie Albies led off the fourth with a double off St. Louis starter Ming Xiang.
He scored on a two-out single by Ben Shuster.
An inning later, the Wheels fell off for the Walkers.
Jared Thomas and pinch-hitter Jake Parker opened the inning with consecutive doubles off Xiang.
After a strike out, Albies singled to score Parker and tie the game.
Danny Patino followed with the inning's third double, scoring Albies to put Indy in front.
After an intentional walk to Tony Galvan, Xiang struck out Shuster for the second out.
Greg Sones took his place.
Sones had been impressive in relief in Game 2.
In this game, not so much.
Brian Gunyon bashed the first pitch he saw into the gap in right-center for a two-run triple.
Brian Newell bettered that with a two-run homer to make it 8-3.
Loest (2-0) worked five innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out two and walked the same.
Justin Fuller and Micah Bell both worked two scoreless innings to wrap up the win.

MBL news: Oct. 22 -- World Series Game 4 -- Indianapolis 8, St. Louis 6, Indianapolis lead 3-1

Jared Thomas spent 11 seasons as the starting catcher for the St. Louis River Walkers.
In Game 4 of the World Series, Thomas delivered a blow which might lift the Indianapolis Racers to a championship over his former team.
Thomas hit a grand slam off Greg Sones in the bottom of the eighth inning to cap a five-run outburst as Indy defeated the River Walkers 8-6 at the Astrodome (1995).
The win gave the Racers a 3-1 series lead.
Indy jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a big bottom of the third against St. Louis rookie starter Matt Wilson.
CJ Abrams drove in two of the runs with a double.
St. Louis tied it in the top of the fourth.
Manuel Coke hit a one-out solo homer off Racers starter Danny Munos.
Nick Shaw followed with a double and when Mark Waterson cranked one 363 feet over the left-field wall the game was tied.
Jordan Quinto drew a lead-off walk from Danny Munos in the fifth and scored on a Mark Herman fly ball to put the Walkers in front.
St. Louis increased its lead to 6-3 in the seventh.
Reliever Gil Meier walked Jordan Quinto to open the inning then hit pinch-hitter Wen He.
That set the stage for singles from Coke and Shaw later in the inning to drive in runs.
The bullpen has been the Walkers weakness throughout the second half of the season, especially from the left side.
It was never more apparent in this game as a pair of former stalwarts took a beating.
Nick Ruffalo opened the inning on the mound.
CJ Abrams led off and reached on an error by catcher Jackson Miler.
Danny Patino and Tony Galvan both followed with single, scoring a run to make it 6-4.
Sones took over and struck out right-handers Ben Shuster and Jake Parker.
But he walked the left-handed hitting Brian Newell to load the bases.
Thomas then unloaded on Sones for his grand slam, driving a 2-1 pitch 394 feet over the right-field wall.
Munos went five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. He struck out two and walked one.
Gil Meier pitched the sixth and recorded the first two outs of the seventh, while being charged with the Walkers final two runs.
Jose Castenada got out of a jam to end the seventh.
Corey Moorehead (1-0) set the Walkers down in order in the eighth.
He would earn the win.
Ramiro Canales set St. Louis down in order in the ninth for his fifth save of the postseason.

MBL news: Oct. 23 -- World Series Game 5 - Indianapolis 5, St. Louis 2, Indianapolis wins series 4-1

Down 1-0, Indianapolis scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning and the Racers rode it to a 5-2 World Series championship clinching win in Game 5 at the Astrodome (1995).
Big innings were a key to the Racers series win.
They had a seven-run inning in a 9-3 win in Game 3.
A five-run inning in an 8-6 victory in Game 4.
And today's four-run inning to key their win in Game 5.
The primarily left-handed hitting lineup also caused problems for St. Louis.
After Game 2, none of the St. Louis starting pitchers lasted more than five innings -- and two of them didn't even get into the fourth -- leaving the left-handed side of its bullpen overworked.
Not along with the fact, its two best lefties -- Greg Sones and Nick Ruffalo -- struggled to get anyone out after the first two games.
St. Louis grabbed the lead in the top of the first inning against Racers starting pitcher Chung Pei.
Bob Saavedra led off the game with a triple and scored on a Mark Herman single.
That lead vanished when Indy cranked a pair of home runs off Kevin Hrdlicka in the third.
Jared Thomas homered for the second straight game, a solo shot, with one out to tie it.
Danny Patino made it 4-1 with a three-run blast.
Indy made it 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh.
Ozzie Albies led off the inning with a double off Bobby Westerman.
He scored when Patino followed with a single.
Pei (2-0) was strong for six innings, allowing one run on four hits. He struck out five and walked one.
Matt Walizer worked a scoreless seventh.
Racers closer Ramiro Canales gave up a run in the eighth but nothing in the ninth to seal the Racers first Midwest Baseball League championship.

The St. Louis River Walkers have acquired minor-league second baseman Tom Porter from the Quad City Thunder in exchange for 19-year-old right-handed pitcher Timoteo Alvizo.
Porter, 29, spent the bulk of the 2037 season at AAA Colorado Springs where he hit .376 with two homers and 35 RBIs in 81 games.
He also played 18 games at AA Billings, where he hit .378 with nine RBIs.

The St. Louis River Walkers have acquired infielder Jim Moorman from the Green Bay Mallards in exchange for minor league 1B/3B Luis Salinas and LHP Matt Wilson.
Moorman, who can play both second and third base, will likely slide into the second base role vacated by Marcos Francis when he left the team in free agency.
Moorman, 28, played in 110 games for the Mallards last season, starting 31, and hit .236 with 12 homers and 31 RBIs.

For the Walkers, he was 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA in nine games (eight starts).
The 26-year-old Salinas has put up good numbers throughout his minor league career, but has been blocked at the major league level.
At AAA Memphis in 2037, he hit .310 with 17 homers and 69 RBIs in 129 games.
