Back story: There has been a single photo circulating for a few years now, supposedly of John Lamb, but after discussions in a couple areas here at OOTP, it was determined that the photo was actually Jim McKee. The misidentification probably started with Brace Photo. I (and surely a few others) ordered a John Lamb photo from Brace, here's what I received: (At the bottom of this message, the front and relevant portion of the reverse of the photo I received from Brace.) I mailed the pic to Lamb, of course assuming it was him, requesting an autograph. And he signed it! It must be Lamb! A couple years ago, he appeared at a baseball card show in Pittsburgh, and that same photo was the one he was signing all day. It must be Lamb! Despite Lamb signing that photo (which I now find incredibly strange), others brought to my attention that: 1. The photo looks only kinda like Lamb, but it definitely resembles McKee. Ok, it's *spot on* McKee. 2. That's McKee's unif # on his back, not Lamb's. Ok, yinz convinced me. It's McKee. Not so fast. Buccos, if you are still able to contact Mr. Lamb, you could ask him what color eyes he has. The player identified as McKee has brown eyes and the player Merkle posted has blue eyes.
Nonetheless, I am going with Merkle on this one. That photo Lamb identifies as himself is a dead ringer for McKee in other pictures I have seen of him. Glasses, mutton chops, everything. |
