'62 Mets

Quick thought after that roster of spring expenses (many thanks). Could our '62 Mets righty be Aubrey Gatewood?

Don Lock

LOL Yeah I was like, hey, I made that! LOL But its really flawed. I may ask my friend Mark to take a shot at it. His work is on a much higher level than mine when it comes to transformations and colorizations. Thank you JG.

Great work! I really like it better than the Topps 68 Lock.

Aubrey Gatewood

I wondered the same thing when I went through those names. I dont think that is him either. That guy on the right is so familiar, I can't believe I havent been able to find him. It sure is fun though.

Nope. It's not Aubrey. Closest I could think of--from that expense sheet--was Marc Hoy. And it's not Hoy. But thanks for the pic of Gatewood as a Met. I've been looking for one of those for some time.

Edit: Oh, wait. I'm confused a bit. I thought of Hoy as closest to the lefty--he had a roundish face--but he was a righty and no dimple. Still not Aubrey. A couple of the no-names have a vague similarity to the righty (vague being the operative word)--Dawes Hamilt, Ed Donnelly, even Bill Robinson a bit. But I still think Hook is the closest. And that's not saying a whole lot.

Got any good Pilots pics of Dickie Bates? Just askin'. I've got the Galasso card, the B&W postcard and the tiny color yearbook pic. Was hoping for something better (or at least different).

Could the photo be related to this story?

From the Complete Armchair Book of Baseball by John Thorne:

page 306 of chapter entitled "Bring Back the Real Mets"

Amid all the optimistic enthusiasm that surrounded the Mets, the seventy-one year old Casey Stengel remained an island of sanity. Oh he staged his little charades, picking two heavy-legged rookies names Dawes Hamilt and Bruce Fitzpatrick to trot out before visiting columnists as brilliant stars of the future. They were not of course, and after the spring were never heard of again. But for one brief moment, Camelot. All over the country.

I do not know what Hamilt or Fitzpatrick looked like but could this photo be of the two supposed stars appearing before visiting columnists?

Followup: I found a You Tube video of the 1962 Mets spring training and it features brief segments on both Hamilt and Fitzpatrick batting. See if you find a match: link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h07-pgPa4P4

Hey, that was cool! I hadn't seen that before. I've got some pretty good pictures of Fitzpatrick on my other computer. I'll give 'em a look-see, though I don't recall him having that chin. Dawes Hamilt was a goofy looking guy. You almost never see pictures of him but, like I said before, he very vaguely resembles the righty. I could buy him as Dawes. But I definitely want to look at my pictures of Fitzpatrick before I commit to anything.

Both Bruce and Dawes were righties, fwiw, though Bruce was a switch hitter. The height difference fits. Dawes was an inch taller than Bruce.

Again, thanks for the vid.

A brief mention of Hamilt (adding a first name, 'Marshall') and another guy, Billy Whalen, is here:

Unique find

Here is a Curt Blefary picture with the Braves. Spring training 1973, never played in regular season with them however.

Don Lock - Phillies

Frosty Malt fixed up my mess so I redid the 1968 card and created cards for '67 and '69. Would still welcome a similar pose from Mr. Merkle if he has one.

Sir Merkle

Would you happen to have topps negative images for Rusty Gerhardt-Padres, Mike Nagy-Astros, Don Hahn-Padres, and/or John Scott-Padres? I will be waiting eagerly for your reply.

Here are two Topps Vault images of John Scott from 1972 as well as the 1976 SSPC card of Scott.

Paul Schaal - Angels - Anything available?

Just noticed there is very little available for Paul Schaal with the Angels. This is what I have... if there is a topps vault of 1966 or 1967, those would suffice.
