Tank an owner goal for the betterment of the team?
So here is my dilema, last season I signed a former ace pitcher who was hurt for 2/3 of the season, simply because I had the money to pay him to sit on the DL all year and it seemed worth a gamble for a stretch run in case I had injuries/underperformance (which did happen my #1 went down in sept).
I signed him for 2 years at 13m, the problem is he is on a hard decline, while not totally ineffective, he is a #4/5 at best and I have a several players languishing in my bullpen as well as a top prospect he will be blocking. I have already demoted him from the rotation, just to shake things up and see if my team performs better (I am leading my division, but my team is at mid level pitching stats when we were top 3 for the last few seasons) My owner wants me to sign him to an extension...but really I have a logjam, so im left with a few options. 1) let him walk and peeve off the owner/fans and fail a goal, I will still pass 2 of 3 goals 2) Sign him and let him languish in the bullpen and/or move someone else but I know i will get a diminished return on anyone im willing to move. 3) Sign him, pass the goal and cut him after ST next season, knowing I have the money to do so but wasting resources I could use for FA or IFA |

the 13m was 6.5/year and his asking price on an extension was 8.5m which is way overpaying!

I'm not familiar with how many goals you need to pass to keep your job yet, or if any are more important than another. That said, I think I would just let him walk and hope that winning is more important to the owner.

One of my goals is to extend a 41 year old Eppa Rixey past the TWO years already remaining on his deal. Second time I pitched him he went down for 3 months with shoulder inflammation.
Fire me if he wants, it'll look good at my next interview!

Depending on your owner personality owner goals don't mean much. Most of the time winning is more then enough. Failing one goal isn't going to hurt you if you pass the rest. I've found that usually one goal is pretty tough every time at least with the owners I've dealt with.

I have a similar problem. My owner wants me to upgrade at second base.
The problem is, that's the position played by George Sellers. The hugely popular three-time MVP, and all-time league HR leader. My league just finished its seventh season, and he's only 30. While he has declined in BA the last few years, he's still decent defensively (by 1907 standards, at least), and still a good power hitter. And, as I mentioned, popular. Batting averages were declining around the league last year, anyway - only two .300+ hitters, and the leader hit .305. Dead ball era, indeed! No Cobbs or Lajoies around, though, apparently. One of my outfield prospects is already a 4-and-a-half-star player, and more than ready, so I can trade the current 34-year-old 3-star LF for much-needed pitching prospects while he still has value. Makes more sense to me, but hey, what do I know? I've only won four championships in seven years. ![]() So, yeah, sometimes you just have to ignore the owner. Thankfully, my guy is a winning-trumps-everything-else type, so I shouldn't have much to worry about unless Sellers really goes into early decline. Owners: Can't live with 'em, don't have the money to do anything without 'em. |

Let him go, the owner will be happier with a winning team then one that has a popular boat anchor.

Pray your owner falls victim to the OOTP Owner Death disease.
Seriously, the owner goals don't matter much except for winning. My owner wanted me to improve at left field, and I had a young, controllable 22 year old there who hits .250 with 30 homer power and stellar defense (70+ ratings all around on 20-80). I failed that goal, but also made the Greek Championship Series, my equivalent of the World Series. So who knows more? Oh yeah, he extended my contract after that too. |

I'm in 2016, and my owner (Rangers) wants me to extend Adrian Beltre...who is now nothing more than a backup 3B and sometime DH while Joey Gallo plays 3B. Beltre still wants better than $20 million. Yeah, not happening.

The worst is what's happened to me twice now in solo leagues. Owner gives you 4-5 goals, you pass all of them. Then said owner dies in the last month of the season and their son takes over. The son gives you a new set of goals (for that season) and you end up failing all of them.
Failing them hasn't gotten me fired (yet) but it's frustrating when you can't achieve goals because you keep getting new owners.

Has anyone else noticed that in OOTP world all of the sons are ridiculously cheap? |
