Advice for adding a salary cap to MLB
I want to add a salary cap to a standard MLB game and was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to do this?
I know there is an option to set the salary, but I'm more after tips on how to structure the rest of the fiances to make sure teams can afford the salary cap and to make sure teams can get under it. If a start a standard MLB game and add a salary cap of around $100 - $120 million, teams the Dodgers and Yankees (and quite a few others) would struggle to get under it. Is there a way to reduce all salaries by x% so teams are closer to the cap? I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks. |

Remember the key is a salary cap is really only for 3 or 4 teams to not spend way past the rest. So 120 would be far too low.
Maybe go with 200 million in a modern setting, or if you want to squeeze a few more teams 180 mil But then you might want to increase the low teams budgets by 2 or 3 mill to help be sure they can cover the extra free agents from the big teams being available and needing a place to play. |

Take 5+ seasons to get to the number you want.
Start at 200 and decrease by 10 mil each season until you are where you want. Make all national media contracts the same to stabilize revenue some. You will have to do some back of napkin math to decide merchandising,, local contract and ticket baselines and averages. The big thing is understanding that you are making a substantial change to the financial engine and it will need some management from you to run well.

If I do implement a salary cap, will teams be allowed to be over the cap during the off season as long as they are not above it on opening day (like roster limits) or are they always limited by it?
