The History of the Montreal Expos (1969-2004) Redo
Major League Baseball has decided to award Montreal, Quebec, Canada, a baseball team named the Expos. This will be a historical simulation of the Expos history from their expansion year to their last season in 2004 when they moved to Washington to become the Nationals.
In real life, the team had one division title, and that was from the strike-shortened split season format leading to the first Division Series in MLB Playoffs. They also missed the playoffs after dominating the league in 1994 before the strike called off the whole season. Hopefully, with me as their General Manager I can do much better. I started in the 1968 season and simulated through that so I can do the expansion draft. I changed certain settings to be more to my personal liking. The version is OOTP 23. Complete Scouting System with Normal accuracy the ratings are 20-80, no cut off. Owner Goals are off, and the coaching system is on. Storylines are on. Normal suspensions Batter and Pitcher aging speed is .900 TCR is 125 Trading Difficulty two clicks below hard Trading Preference, one click below favor prospects Draft pick trading is allowed, waiver trading is allowed Amateur Draft is in December and the order is announced on draft day. There is currently, as of 1968, 20 lottery choices and 20 lottery teams in the amateur draft, Media contracts are based on team market size. The entire revenue is available. No luxury tax, no revenue sharing, visiting team receives 40% of gate. Maximum Contract length is 5 years, extensions allowed. No arbitration. Minimum service is 6 years. All teams are represented at All Star Game, there is an All Star Futures Game. The League updates automatically, and there is the full default feeder league enabled. I hate that, too. And I actually thought there was a feature or setting where you could choose to play before or after the expansion draft. I was having problems getting a "realistic" draft after starting my game but after fooling with settings I was able to get an expansion draft.

March 3, 1969
On the eve of spring training, my coaching staff is set. I was able to poach some talent from other major league rosters in the expansion draft. That was an ordeal that I should have planned better before starting this thread. I had trouble getting enough players in the expansion draft for 4 new teams in 1969. Then I was also having trouble changing the amateur draft from December to another date without the year changing to 2022 or 2023. Next time I attempt this, I think I will simulate 10 seasons before taking over an expansion team in their first year. Maybe that might help the draft pool.
In the expansion draft, I was able to draft Boog Powell from the Orioles. I don't think the Orioles would have given him up since he wins the AL MVP in 1970, I think? So, he's definitely the star of the team. I also drafted 46 year old reliever Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm. I did my first amateur draft and was awarded the 21st pick. My pick decided to go to college. I am projected to win only 58 games in 1969. I have no top prospects as of right now. I like my coaching staff, all under contract for 5 years. I don't know what I really expect out of them, but we'll see. From this point forward. I will keep better track of all interactions I make to improve (or decrease) the performance of my team. |

Opening Day April 8, 1969
The Expos opened their inaugural season at Shea Stadium against the New York Mets. 28,551 fans showed up for this 2:05 game on a 51 degree cloudy day.
My opening day lineup: LF Manny Mota 3B Tommie Reynolds RF Ron Fairly 1B Boog Powell C Hawk Taylor CF Tommy McCraw 2B Jerry Adair SS Steve Hertz P Norm Angelini Pitching for the Mets was Tom Seaver. He pitched all nine innings. In the first inning, the Expos had 4 hits and 4 runs. Taylor hit a 3-run homer. The first inning was really exciting to see, but alas, the Expos only were able to add 1 more run in the 3rd on 2 more hits off Seaver. The Mets were able to have a 6-run 7th inning and knocked Angelini out of the game. The Expos are currently 0-1 and now expected only to win 50 games this season. But, they do have a top 100 prospect at #100. I signed him as a minor league free agent after a Royals affiliate released him. My minor league is currently dead last. |

After a month of play, the Expos are 6-16, and surprisingly, not the worst team in baseball.
