What is the official word on player rust?

Hi,

There were some good discussions in a thread a while ago about player rust. Can we have the official word about whether this exists? It makes a big difference on how to play the game.

For example, does a player have a performance penalty if he hasn't been used over a period of time? If there is, it would provide some motivation to play less skilled players and to make sure your bullpen gets some work.

If it doesn't exist, this would be a great feature for OOTP 12!!

Rust does exist (that's official), and it has never been quantified. The reason for that is to keep gamers from gaming the system by playing players just enough to keep them from getting rusty.

Not only is there a ratings hit, the chances of a player getting injured are significantly increased. That's a big reason why you generally see a spate of injuries the first couple games of spring training (which really isn't that far off from reality, although ST injuries tend to be more spread out than they are in OOTP). This is one of many areas Markus has chosen to leave "under the hood"; as far as I know, even keeping a player out of a single game slightly increases his rust quotient (although at that level it may be insignificant).

Huh. I didn't know this. It would be awesome if we could get some abstract idea of rust levels through the scouting report. Something as simple as "out of shape" or "in shape".

Yeah, I like that. Alternatively it could be "ready to play" for every day and "part time" for a slow build up. That would probably require a rejig of the entire injury/recovery/rested feature.

Particularly in online leagues, because of lack of everyday control, I usually ease a player back by platooning or using the 7-day lineups.

The best part of OOTP for me is stuff like this, things I didn't know even after 5 or 6 years.

Yes, I do think we should have at least a rough idea about levels of rust. Since I don't follow baseball, I don't even have any idea of how frequently a reliever needs to get in the game to stay sharp. Even if it is just broken down into 5 levels like (sharp, good, fair, poor, totally oxidized).

If possible Steve it would be great if you could give a broad explanation about whether this type of rust exists.

Thanks

Well, with various complaints about forum members not being nice to n00bs around here, I wanted to be careful...

Actually I have read almost all of the manual and did read about spring training rust. Even though I failed to be specific in my OP I was mainly talking about rust throughout the season, not just at the start.

Yes, rust applies at any time in the season. It was mentioned in a PM that a player who sat on the bench for two weeks shouldn't expect to do well pinch hitting, since he would've gotten rusty.

Nothing a little bit of WD40 can't take care of.

Rust is olny applied in two cases: 1) Coming back from a longer injury (14+ days, the longer the more rust) and 2) entering Spring Training.

I'm not sure what should be done about #1 then.

Why not either have rehab assignments or build the rehab time (getting rid of the rust) right into the injury time?

I've suggested the rehab thing a number of times in the past but some folks said that rehab was more or less assumed, that the rehab time is included as part of the injury time. Markus never said anything about that.

Well now he has and it's clear a direction is needed
