Birmingham

So...every single league in every single universe has a Birmingham Barons or Birmingham Bandits. Mine is no different.

:sigh:

I need some good ideas. Fire away you big-brained idea-makers.

Bulls
Steelers, Vulcans (or anything else related to the steel industry)
Railers, Rail Rockets (ditto for anything related to railroad industry)
Magicians (one of Birmingham's old nicknames is "the Magic City")

I go with "Bulls", although that's for the UK Birmingham and a reference to a famous shopping mall there called the Bullring...

They had a WHA hockey team called the Bulls once. A sort of alliterative reworking of what they were called before the move, the Toronto Toros. (Probably because they were too cheap to come up with new logo/uniforms!)

I think I like the Bulls idea but I'd like to see a few more suggestions before I start on the logo & jerseys.

A little off the wall. How about the Brummies?

Birmingham grew based on iron, steel, and railroads. You could pick any of the jillion names along those lines? "Steam," etc.

It was also called the "Pittsburgh of the South," so you could do something like "Southern Steelers"?

Sounds interesting. Can you elaborate on what it is all about?

I have a Bullfrogs at the ML level. But that would be a good one. Unless you can up with something better for Louisiana (in New Orleans).

Well it seems that the Alabama Birmingham was created by expats from England who were very likely Brummies. The industrial nature of the city suggests they were recreating something similar to what they left.

Quote:
Brummie (sometimes Brummy) is a colloquial term for the inhabitants, accent and dialect of Birmingham, England, as well as being a general adjective used to denote a connection with the city, locally called Brum. The terms are all derived from Brummagem or Bromwichham, historical variants or alternatives to Birmingham.
Based on this above from wiki it seems likely that the unique dialect they used was spoken in the early days. I can tell you from personal experience as a Glaswegian or "weegie" that the Brummies take some time to pick up, even with my experienced ears.

You could always use the old USFL nickname of Stallions. That Birmingham team was always one of the top draws in the USFL because Alabama is a such a football-hungry state. Vulcans or Steelers would be good for reasons alluded to earlier. And I have always liked Confederates to harken back even further in history.

RichW is pretty right on with that description. I was born and raised in Alabama, and while I never spent that much time in Birmingham, he is correct on its origins. Lots of Brits and Germans came here and put down roots and a lot of Jews as well. Quite a lot of rich history to draw from.

So this is "common knowledge" in Alabama?
