Players called up for spring training who are out of options

Every season my active roster gets filled up with minor leaguers for spring training , which is fine because a similar thing happens in real life. However, the issue comes when some of these minor leaguers are out of options and I can't send them back down after spring training.

Is there a way to make sure tat only minor leaguers with at least 1 option year get called up and those with none don't get called up?

Thanks

No, unless you change the rules about option years. This is a mirror of how MLB works.

Hmmm, a player without options shouldn't need to be sent back to the minors after spring training since he'd have to have been put on the 40-man roster in order to have to do a transaction move (either put him on the 25-man active roster or waive him if you want him back in the minors).

A player without options can be a non-roster invitee in real life, but since he's not on the 40-man roster, he just gets reassigned to minor league camp/team.

IRL most MLB teams do not leave ST with the best 25 players. Useful veterans with no options left will often make the roster while a better player with options left is sent down. In OOTP as you approach opening day the waiver wire fills up with players. That's the time to try and sneak someone by if you want.

As was said this reflects reality and challenges the GM to decide which assets he will risk losing.

Thanks for the clarification.

If I want to avoid certain players being called up to spring training, is there a way I can do this?

Currently when spring training starts my active roster is filled with minor leaguers that I didn't put there. Is this because I assign my Assistant GM to do minor league promotions/demotions, or just a 'feature' of the game?

Thanks.

Are these "minor leaguers" you are talking about on the 40-man roster?

The way MLB rosters work is that for most purposes the 40-man is the true roster that teams are working with. It is just that for most of the regular season only 25 of those guys can be active in the major leagues at one time. Anyone who then gets sent to the minors while on the 40-man is using an option. In the off-season and spring training the 25-man roster doesn't exist. The team doesn't call a guy who is on the 40-man up to spring training...he is automatically there. Then, if once the season starts a team wants to send them to the minors they have to be "optioned" again (if they have any options left).

Now, you can bring a guy to spring training who isn't on the 40-man roster, but those guys don't need to be optioned (so shouldn't cause any issues when sent down). It is possible that your assistant GM is placing guys on the 40-man that you would rather they didn't...I don't know for sure though as I don't typically automate that stuff.

That's a good point, they could be on the 40 man roster. I have spring training coming up soon so I'll keep an eye on it.

Thanks.
