Scouting the draft…

While I know there’s no exact science to the draft I was looking to get different ideas on how everyone scouts and goes about making their selection in the draft?
My work is very minimal I wait til the draft and draft the highest potential and who I’m most likely to sign.

I usually just wait til draft and don’t even really look at their stats coming from college or high school.

Just looking for some new ideas/strategy ideas.

If it's a high draft pick I like to check my scout's evaluation against that of the OSA to see if there's any big differences in how the player is seen. If they are more or less in agreement that's good enough for me. If there's a big disparity I think twice.

So going up to draft you request a scouting report on each player that draws your interest?

Yes, I'll request a scouting report. If what my scout says pretty much lines up with the OSA then I feel better about spending a high pick on a player.

IMO, hitting is easier to get than pitching.

If you’re high on a pitching prospect go with him before bats.

I started this thread on how I scout in v21.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...d.php?t=319942

Still pretty much the same though the timing is different in v22. In v22 once scouted to very high or high the levels seem to last longer. IE not much re-scouting is needed compared to v21.

Short version is
build filters to find draftable players
put on shortlists
scout shortlists
end up with approx 300 prospects on my board

More detail in the linked thread.

I love what you shared. How did you make the filters into who was draftable?
Did you just make a shortlist and move them in as you got the scouting reports?
I love this game but I’m getting more in debt to it so I have a good idea how I want to play when 23 comes out.

So for example if I scout Kumar Rocker I’d add him to my draftable shortlist and there’s a way to rank guys?

Did you read the linked thread or just the short version? Just not sure how to answer not knowing that. Some of this will just repeat what is there.

Make 2 shortlists. 20XX Draft, 20XX Draft Board. Use your filters to identify
the "draftable" players. These players are immediately put on the Draft SL. I then move them to the D-Board SL once they are "high" of "very high" and those minimum skills are confirmed.

Once on a SL to scout you simply use multi-select to request reports on the whole list, or the scout list limit, if you have more than 250ish(?). Prioritize the best players. I think I have the pool release 90 days before draft and that is enough time to get everybody to "very high", at least with my scout.

Setup filters to whatever skills you "have" to have to make a guy someone you want. I'll attach my filters screenshot. Note these are all potential and are based on the absolute lowest rating that I think can perform in some way on the MLB level. Your opinion may be different than mine

Build views for whatever you want to see to use with your shortlists. Make them "global" so they can be used anywhere. I have P views, Batter views, and combos.

I sort by overall potential first. Then resort if I want to know about... guys with power, or P stamina, control, intelligence, work rate, etc. etc. etc.
It's only limited by your imagination.

In your views include "short listed". If you do this then on the draft screen you can bring up all of the players but eliminate anyone that is not on your list. IE you can bring up only your shortlist (Draft board SL) and sort and draft straight from it.

From this thread and the one I linked you should get the idea and be able to fine tune it to whatever you want.

This is what I needed. I had no idea you could half the things you were just saying.

Glad to help. Use your imagination as you build views, it's almost limitless

edit to add: Keep in mind to move the "draftable players" you found with your filter to your shortlist you can mass select and put them on the SL with 2 clicks. One to mass select, right click, and scroll to the "add to "XXX SL". Voila you just moved all of the draftable players at once
To move once at "high" from the draft list to the draft board, same thing. Use the filter to sort the high-very high players, mass select, mass move. Quick and easy

The following comment is not directed at you but I have to say with regard to the bold...

This is why I laugh when I read people post how OOTP is stale and doesn't really add or improve much version to version anymore. A lot of the things I posted here (views that give you so many ways to sort and filters with so many selections being added yearly) would not have been possible probably 2 versions ago. So many new tools are added each year to make sorting and finding what you want either easier or possible where it wasn't possible before. Some complain we don't need the eye candy of 3d but instead we need more under the hood things to make the GM experience better. Well, these things are being added but they aren't "in our face". Users have to explore to find these features that are under the hood
