Anderson Utilities - AUCompare

On the hot plate now, this is beginning to look pretty cool for the historical season player.

It loads a player's sim stats in one window and his real life stats in another to compare.

Also going to make it do a compare and display the best and worse performances compared to their real stats.

Here is a peek a boo screen shot for the 1927 Lou G.

Looks great! I, for one, would certainly use this.

One suggestion, if I may. Would it be possible to have the corresponding fields line-up with each other a little better? Would make it a little faster in comparing actual vs. simmed stats...

Never even thought of a utility for this. I've spent many, many nights searching through the Baseball Encyclopedia for the stats of historical players who were pretty obscure in real life but did unusually well in a particular season or on my team.

That's what I like about the alternate universe of historical sims (not replays, as distinguished in another interesting thread).

Wishing you great luck with this.

Can you give a screenshot of what happens when a historical player ( a scrub, say Junior Kennedy) grows up to be a 15 year superstar?

How does this thing handle no data found for historicals?

I am using the Lehrman database to pull up the historical data. That is why the grids with the stats are formatted in different order. I am hiding some of the columns that are not used. It would be too difficult to align those two grids up. That is why I have the grid with the differences. I will pretty that up when I get the numbers all in there.

I have not got as far as no historical records, but:

The program checks to see if your league is a historical and if NOT, it will tell you and not let you run it. I may change that to just advise you.

I will modify the list of players so that they are only shown if they are in the historical database. So, it will really be impossible to show stats for non-real plays in the program.

Now this is a season to season display. So, you are comparing the 1927 Babe Ruth with the 1927 Babe Ruth. It currently only compares your current season. So, if you are in 1949, it just shows 1949 stats. I will change that to allow you to pick what season you want to load.

When the program first loads and you hit the start button, it first loads in all the players in the league from your CSV file. It then loads in all the player's stats for the given year. It loads this entire file into memory, but just the stats for this year and for your MLB. No splits, no minors, no post season stats are loaded. Then it loads in the entire lahman database for players in the given year.

Then you can start clicking on players.

Now, if you wanted to switch years, you would basically have to click START again and clear our everything and reload it for the year. The problem is, if it is a LONG league, 50+ years, it takes a minute to load in the stats. There is no workaround for this, as it is the bad design of the dump.

I still have to load the pitcher's stats also, and do all the screens for the pitchers. It will autodetect if it is a hitter or pitcher and display the correct stats.

Once the individual compare is complete, then I will add a league compare. It will basically go through every player and do the compare. It will then display the top 50 over performers and top 50 under performers and maybe the top 50 most accurate.

The first public release is here...

http://www.planetootp.com/AUCompare/default.htm

For historical leagues. Best if used after the mid point of the system, as you will have some stats to compare.

For hitters, you can click the 162 per button and it will estimate what the season totals would be for the sim, if they were to pace this out to 162 games. So, if you have 22 home runs at the 1/2 way point, it will show 44 homeruns. I have not done this for pitching yet.

If a player has no sim stats, then just his real life stats are displayed. If he has no real stats (Playing after he really retired), then just his sim stats are displayed.

If he has neither stats, both are displayed but empty. (I will fixing it to remove these people from the player list, but that is tricky)

I also plan to add a top 50 most overperforming and most underperforming players. Maybe even load the 'difference' in a sortable grid.

See how this works for now for you and give me any suggestions.

Did an update already.

I had forgotten to remove the hard coding of the database. Now when you run it the first time, it will ask where the historical database is located and write it down for later use.

I cleaned up the pitcher's difference table and still have to do it to the hitters. Just evening things up and adding more stats, if needed.

I also did a very, very tricky routine to remove the players names from the hitters list and the pitchers list if they did not have any MLB stats in the sim game.

However, if there is a player with sim stats, and no real stats, he is still in the list. For instance, if a player retired in 1962 in real life, but is still playing in 1963 in your sim, he of course will not have any real life stats to compare to.

Am I the only one alive around here?

Added a new function:

Top50. Actually, it is more than 50. It loads in all hitters with at least 501 plate appearances and compares their sim stats vs. real life stats for the current year. It displays it in a sortable grid, with hits, average, doubles, triples, homeruns, runs, rbis, walks, strikeouts and stolen bases. Each field is sortable, so in a couple clicks, you can see who improved the most or the least in each field.

Why limit it to just people with enough PA, well, if someone only had 350 at bats in the sim and hit 44 homeruns in real life, it would show them with a BIG drop. Same thing the other way around.

I think I will add the other fields: Games, CS, IBB, SH, SF and GIDP. Those are the only ones available through the real database and some of the information is missing on some fields. I guess I can also add OBP and SLG.

Next up is the pitchers page.

I also want it to add to the top 5 and lowest 5 in each category a line to their player's history:

19630101 Had 3rd best over performing in hits for 1963.

or

19630101 Had 3rd worse under performing in HRs for 1963.

That would look cool in the history file for the player.

My lerhman database is located in C:\stats

Try creating that folder and putting the leahman database there. I will look into the bug.

I couldn't get it to work either, even when pointed to the proper folder. Same error as noted above. It can't find the batting files for the years in question.

Look for a file in C:/AU2006 called AUstats.txt

It should contain the location of your lahman database as shown:

C:\Stats

NO trailing backslash.
