Number of Pitches Matter?

I traded a Pitcher with 4 different pitches for a pitcher that has 3 different pitches. Does this matter in the game?

Anecdotally, it appeared to me that a pitcher with only two effective pitches (whether they only have two at all or if the third is weak) won't be an effective starter, even if the ratings of those two pitches is good. They're a fine reliever, though.
