can't trade a player

I'm trying to trade a player and getting a message saying "player is already included in pending offer, on waivers or will become a free agent". None of these apply as he has 4 years left on contract, it's July 27, and there is nothing in the pending trade or waiver queue. I want to trade him before the deadline!

I saved the game and advanced to Aug 9 before he became available to trade. No message or indication why he wasn't before.

Figured that under the circumstances I had just messed up somewhere.
