Pitch By Pitch or Not?

I've been playing now for a couple years.
I usually act as a human manager for one team and play against AI.

What does the "pitch by pitch" button do.
Can't figure out the difference.

What happens in the default mode compared to what happens when switched "ON" - button is to the right showing GREEN?

The game progresses, pitch by pitch rather than only seeing the last pitch of the at bat only. You have to press the 1 key on the num pad (there's another shortcut, not sure what it is) to start the play. Press enter to finish it, then press 1 again, lather, rinse, repeat.
