Question Amateur draft or assigning to actual teams or free agency in league starting in 1901

I'm creating a league starting in 1901. In that era, there was no player draft. I'd like the actual players to appear in the actual years they made the majors, but I'd like them all to be free agents. That is, no draft and not assigned to their original teams.

For instance, I'd like my Washington Senators to be able to bid for or scout or discover Ty Cobb, rather than have him go automatically to the Tigers. Same thing for Walter Johnson, etc.

The only info I can find is: Historical > Historical Rookie Settings > Automatically Import Historical Rookies, where it says If this box is checked, each year the actual rookies from the historical database will be imported into your league automatically. If you want historical rookies to be assigned to the same teams they played for in real life, you must disable the first-year player draft in the Amateur Draft Rules section of the Rules screen. Rookies will be imported on the first day of the preseason. If this box is unchecked, all historical rookies will be dumped into the first-year player draft pool.

To me, this means I only have a choice between a draft and automatic assignment to the original team. So:
  1. Am I understanding this correctly?
  2. Is there a way to get it so that I can get Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson and Fred Merkle on the same team without trades? (I can't help it, I have a soft spot for Fred Merkle).
  3. If there's a way to do it, how would that happen?
  4. If there isn't a way to do it, how do I drown my tears of sorrow and despair?

Any help/insight/guidance/remonstrance/solutions/condemnations/praise is welcome.

The option you're looking for is the checkbox "Import historical rookies as free agents." Somewhat counter-intuitively, it's under a different heading in the settings than historical. I don't remember off the top of my head -- might be under "Players". Someone else will have the exact location.

But that's what you're looking for! It does exist.

I think it is on the third page of the game settings, which has the layout of the draft, how many rounds you want. Same page that gives all the trade info for your league.

That looks like it will be the solution. Thanks so much.

It's in Game Settings > League Settings > Historical. Under the Historical Rookies Settings.
