Questions about setting up a fictional universe
Hey guys...its been a few years since I last played OOTP. Thinking about getting back into it with my purchase of OOTP22.
There are few things (ok, maybe more) that I don't remember about what OOTP can handle...I'm hoping those of you who have played regularly throughout the years can remind me where the limits are. I want to build a fictional universe that will have a single league with minors...eventually. But before we get there, I want to create some old time history similar to real life with multiple leagues that operated sporadically, had wonky schedules, teams that quit mid-season, etc. The universe will start with a single 4-team league in 1890, which operates only 2 years. But in 1891, a 2nd (independent) league begins operation. So, first reminder -- can I have multiple leagues in one game? I'm pretty sure I can move teams in and out (even folding them midseason and starting new teams in their place) with careful control of the schedule. Am I right? For example, in the original 4-team league, one team quits midseason and is replaced with a different team. Another team quits near season end and isn't replaced. This was not uncommon in the early years of baseball where "clubs" played and the final standings of any association or league often was not balanced. So, second reminder -- any limitations to doing this in OOTP? This kind of baseball universe operating in spurts and starts will continue in my universe for a few years, and will eventually settle into two competing leagues in the early 1900s, with one league eventually winning out as the "major league" by the 1930s. In the earliest days, I want FULL control over the teams -- essentially playing in God mode to ensure the outcomes I'm looking for. So, final question (for now) Third reminder, part one -- is there a way to play in God mode -- that is, that ALL teams are HUMAN controlled (no AI moves). ...and... Third reminder, part two -- is there a way to play as "league commissioner" that never takes a job as a team manager? In the early days I want control over all teams, but even later I don't want a universe where "Sam Smith" (human) is GM in the league for 90 years. Thanks for the reminders and refreshers....next challenge is to ensure the game creates players appropriately...I'll have to get back into the names and other databases to modify them. cbbl |

You can do all of these things with one caveat. You will be doing a lot of things manually. I have a solo game where I do a lot of what you are talking about. Renegade leagues, wonky schedules, teams and leagues folding midway through a season. All of it is possible with heavy lifting on your end. I personally don't mind this because I'm more of a world builder myself than a simmer or single player. You can also control rosters and actions of all teams as well. The biggest limitations in '22 are with the draft but if you are trying to run a historical type setup you probably aren't using the draft anyway so you would be fine.

Thanks. That's good to know. I don't mind doing the manual work -- in fact, I prefer it. There are a few things, though, that I'm a little uncertain how to do. Might you be willing to help guide me?
I need to spend a little time refamiliarizing myself with the settings and the manual. I'll try to get to that soon and come back with some targeted questions. Thanks for the help. |
