He is already set as retired in our database

It's sometimes possible for the AI to unretire players who are retired, so it may be that this happened in one of your games.

There's nothing we can do to prevent that, but if it happens you should just be able to retire him again manually.

Is this also possible if a player retires in game? For example, I had Dave Winfield announce his retirement in 1991. I'm now in 1992 and he's on my team, since the AI signed him to a MiLB deal.
Graeme Lloyd retired in my game to play soccer, but is still active and pitching in my bullpen.

Yes. It's fairly rare that this happens, but it will from time to time.

Lukas, so are you saying that players CAN come out of retirement but this is extremely rare? Or are you saying that they defy their storyline every now and then?

It sounds like we are mixing play-types here.

If you are playing a Historical season and using Recalc then I imagine if a player retires early they are brought back by the historical progression that happens each year.

If we have a fictional situation where the player development is completely at the whims of the AI Development engine (and this is something that can also be set up for historical sims) we would then be talking about these rare occasions where a retired player unretires.

With so many settings in the game there are those that can conflict. So, if you are using Storylines and a player retires via that storyline in a historical game...but you also have settings that tell the game to recalc and reset rosters/ratings each season then that is going to override that storyline retirement I would imagine.
