"That's my superstar!" Kelcey Younger squealed as Taylor walked in. She ran over and threw herself onto him, knocking him over onto the couch. She began to heavily kiss him.
"Geez, Kel," Pete Foster said. "Come up for air, will ya?"
"Gotta keep my man happy," Kelcey said with a smile as she climbed off him. Taylor just sat on the couch smiling and enjoying the sight of his cheerleader captain girlfriend.
"Man, you got it all!" Pete said as he threw a Keystone Light at Taylor. "Smokin' hot girlfriend, another home run today and a big payday comin' in a few weeks."
Kelcey slapped herself on the butt, wiggled a little toward Pete and posed. Everyone broke out laughing.
"Sure looks like we live a very charmed life," Taylor said. "And once I sign that big deal, this little lady had a date with a big white dress."
"Your mama know that?" Tina Pearson said. Taylor looked at his life long friend and grinned.
"What mama doesn't know won't hurt her until it's too late," he said. "Besides, I'm graduating and in a few weeks I'll have more money than she's made in her entire life."
"Hey," a deep voice said. The kids turned to see Pete's dad standing in the doorway. "I don't care that you're about to make more money in one day than everyone in town makes in a year. Your mama wiped your nasty little ass from the day you was born so you show some respect."
"Sorry, Mister Foster," Taylor said. "Got a little carried away."
"Just don't get carried away with my Keystone or you'll be buying me a truckload from that fat bonus check."
Everyone laughed as Mr. Foster walked back upstairs. Kelcey unbottoned the top button on her jeans and sat down on Taylor's lap. Pete turned on the 52 inch HDTV and found the Phillies game on MLB Season Ticket. They were already losing 4-0 in the third.
"You really want to play for those guys?" Pete asked.
"Really do," Taylor replied. "I want to be a bigger hero for them than Mike Schmidt was for my daddy."
"Tay," Pete said, "I know he's only been gone for a year but you don't have to throw away your career. I'm sure if he was still here that he'd tell you to hold out for the Yankees or Dodgers or someone with big money."
Taylor put his arm around Kelcey's waist and pulled her close to him. He looked down at the floor and let the wave of emotion sweep over him. He wanted to cry but knew Kelcey didn't like to see him showing emotion like that. It's the reason she wasn't going to be in the room when he got the call that he was going to go after the team records of his dad's hero.
"Well," Taylor said, "I know he's looking down and waiting for me to put on those red pinstripes."
He slid Kelcey off his lap and excused himself to go the bathroom. The tears were coming whether he wanted them or not.
"Geez," Pete said after Taylor went upstairs. "What a friggin' pussy."
"I know," Kelcey said as she walked over, straddled Pete and sat down. "But we only have to put up with him until around Christmas. That's long enough for me to get half of his payday and then we're set for life."
"You didn't tell him yet?"
"Why? It's yours, not his."
